As for 101.9...it cannot be upgraded because of WGMG at 102.1.

In addition...WBTS, WSRV (both Cox) and WYAY are city-grade throughout that area and in most of the mountains. They had True Oldies 106.7 on in the Varsity in Athens when I visited a couple of weeks ago. WFSH seems to have lost a lot with their "upgrade". After the acquision by Cox of the Athens stations, they have a near monopoly on radio around that area. (I had no problem getting Atlanta stations on my car radio in Athens, but a cheap motel clock radio wouldn't get them).

WRBN 104.1 (satellite-delivered AC, which has a permit to move to another frequency as part of a music chairs of changes) has to protect WALR-FM. It is only 370 watts, and city-grade does not get out of Rabun County.

The population growth throughout all of the northern Metro and beyond (Hall and the other counties are not part of the Atlanta Metro) has been out of control (until the economy hit). But there also is a big hispanic population in Gainesville (all of the poultry plants...which will probably close soon if they have not already).

Part of the reason oldies and country proliferate is because of demographics (until recently)...retirees who move to the mountains to live out their golden years. They are either country or old time rock and roll. I am surprised there are not more news/talk stations given the more conservative nature of the area. An AC or Hot AC would be good options for another station in the area.

Entering the market with News-Talk and going up against WDUN takes someone with fortitude.

I agree. Without Rush and Hannity, talk radio will fail and WDUN has both. Also AM is best for talk radio in a mountainous location. WDUN has the signal strength of a Class C FM during the day, without the multi-path problems FM stations have in this region. At night, they still have great coverage of the larger towns.

Now, since WDUN is the flagship of both the Gwinnett Glads and the G-Braves, and also carries UGA sports, I wonder if they could use a partner to carry their regular programming when preempted by sports.

I know they already have WGGA (and WMJE, for that matter), but WGGA is only a 1000W local channel station, and they already have Georgia Tech sports (although I'm not sure if they will keep them now that True Oldies has GT sports).
