Hi

Was reading on other threads here that Radio Disney will silence in KY, RI & FL. Does that mean 990 Miami will be silent? If so, what'll happen?

I believe that the silenced one was 1600 in Riviera Beach.

It appears WHTY-AM 1600 may have already flipped format to Ethnic programming.

Yes, 1600 was silent about 1 month, and went ethnic (although I cannot hear it well here; it & WKWF are about even).

The 1600 Disney went dark about 3 months ago. That's why I was bringing it up. Certainly RD isn't really much of an impact in Miami, either signal OR influence, aside from possibly giveaways at Marlins games or whatever.

There's also 990 Disney in Orlando....but heck...Disney---Orlando.....that would be a shock if *it* went dark!

That would be 50,000 watt WDYZ-AM 990 Orlando (formerly WHOO). It just makes sense for Disney to have that 50kw blowtorch of a signal in Central Florida since the Disney World attraction is right there in Lake Buena Vista.

As to WDYZ in Orlando, an aside....I caught it at 6 am one morning in Bermuda as I awaited a taxi for my early flight, on my li'l Kaito 1102! Good that they were in the clear at the top of the hour, as they had a nice ID for me

I'm suprised no one has picked up on this on the North Florida board. While I'm not 100% sure, the Disney 990's in Miami and Orlando should be unaffected for now. The Florida Disney station in question is WBWL-AM 600 in Jacksonville. They will sign off September 30th. Cheasapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting has agreed to purchase the station and will commence an LMA on Friday October 1st in order to put Conservative talker WBOB on 600 kHz, a stronger full-time signal in metro Jacksonville. Disney has been slowly exiting from their medium market stations - the larger markets seem safe for now.

Aahhh! Muy bien.

(I thought I read a post that mentioned a 990. Coulda been mistaken.)

600 has a nice signal in Jax, NE FL, and SE GA.
We listened to what was then WPDQ back when we attended UF, Gainesville.

Oh well about 990 Miami. I was hoping for a return of Radio Aeropuerto WFBA.

Cue David Eduardo.....

Does this station have any kind of a signal in Broward? In the WFAB days I could never hear them, not even a trace.

There is a listenable signal in Hallandale and Hollywood, south of Hollywood Blvd and east of the turnpike, but venture much further north and the 980 from Pompano pretty well takes over; at least the was the situation in several years ago.

OMG. I really need the return of the Violines de Pego.

@Mr Sheridan, per drt's post:

990 (as most all Disney stations) uses AM IBOC. 980 Pompano either had it, or still has it. Think about that....2 stations, 40 miles apart, 10 kHz apart, both w/ 5 kW (daytime, anyway), both using IBOC.

Forget Car 54.....FCC where aaaaarrrrrreeee youuuuuu?

cd

PS....I drive US 27 toward work in Miami....990 is peachy thru Hialeah Gardens I think, but not worth the listen pretty much anywhere else. Given the programming, it's isn't worth the listen anyway, but I digress.

I'll tell you where the FCC has been all along - In Washington collecting fees, selling radio and other spectrum to the highest bidder. This is one the reasons why the FCC has been somewhat liberal in authorizing new radio spectrum to various communities although I do agree and fully support diversity in bringing new voices to otherwise underserved communities and populations where additional voices are needed and where said additional voices falls within the heading of serving the public interest.

I have to agree with you and the rate this is happening seems to be accelerating........... that said, in this particular case, 980 in Pompano and 990 in Hialeah, if I'm not mistaken both stations have been on the air since at least 1971 that I am aware of. Perhaps someone else, who is more familiar with the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale market (which would be almost anyone) could tell us when both stations came on the air.

I had also heard, but never knew if it was true or not, that 990 (as WFAB) had been involved in some type of controversaryand was was silent for several years.

drt,

I will tell you what I know....I think Mr. Eduardo can fill in the holes.

WFAB was the first Spanish-only station in Miami, and they signed on in 1962. For a 5kW station, you wouldn't know it....I grew up in Hialeah in the 60s & 70s, and it seemed like 500w....maybe a low tower or running below the 5. (I recall the bumper sticker: "Cubans are Fabulous/WFAB 990 kc")

They were directed off the air in 1977---it was something illegal I am sure, but I forgot what happened. David?

Unsure when 980 Pompano signed on, but I recall it was WLOD in late 60s or early 70s, running 1k. They were a daytimer, I think until 1980 or 81, becoming WPIP, 2.5k day/500w night, with MOR (but they even played "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zep without the screaming near the end, but the actual ending was there).

Because there was no 990, it seemed that 980 was at their best as "98 Gold WBSS" in early 80s, and they upped power to 5k day/1k night. Lotsa bumper stickers seemingly in Dade AND Broward. Despite that, 990 was still available here.

Not sure how long the 990 held an actual CP, but they were in the World Radio TV Handbook about 20 years (20 issues) as either "new" or WFBA for call letters. They were Radio Aeropurto 990 WFBA (WFAB was taken for an AM in PR) with Latin instrumentals. That was 1996 or so. Radio Disney took it over around 1999.

Anyone who can plug in the gaps here is welcome to do so.

cd

Thanks for helping to fill in the gaps, CD....... as usual you're a fountainhead of knowledge! :)

I wonder if there are any adjacent channels that are spaced any closer mileage wise? I'm sure there must be somewhere........ but that would be another thread.

drt

I'm sure there are, drt, but at much lower power....it seems that whether a station has IBOC or not is no factor with the FCC.

980 BTW is now Haitian, likely brokered.

(The distance of our 980 & 990 might be more'n 40 miles, but I doubt it's more'n 50. After all, nobody DXes anymore, do they? ::)
