drt,
I will tell you what I know....I think Mr. Eduardo can fill in the holes.
WFAB was the first Spanish-only station in Miami, and they signed on in 1962. For a 5kW station, you wouldn't know it....I grew up in Hialeah in the 60s & 70s, and it seemed like 500w....maybe a low tower or running below the 5. (I recall the bumper sticker: "Cubans are Fabulous/WFAB 990 kc")
They were directed off the air in 1977---it was something illegal I am sure, but I forgot what happened. David?
Unsure when 980 Pompano signed on, but I recall it was WLOD in late 60s or early 70s, running 1k. They were a daytimer, I think until 1980 or 81, becoming WPIP, 2.5k day/500w night, with MOR (but they even played "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zep without the screaming near the end, but the actual ending was there).
Because there was no 990, it seemed that 980 was at their best as "98 Gold WBSS" in early 80s, and they upped power to 5k day/1k night. Lotsa bumper stickers seemingly in Dade AND Broward. Despite that, 990 was still available here.
Not sure how long the 990 held an actual CP, but they were in the World Radio TV Handbook about 20 years (20 issues) as either "new" or WFBA for call letters. They were Radio Aeropurto 990 WFBA (WFAB was taken for an AM in PR) with Latin instrumentals. That was 1996 or so. Radio Disney took it over around 1999.
Anyone who can plug in the gaps here is welcome to do so.
