The good news was that those car engines were very simple compared to the computerized engines we have today. Simple to fix (usually) on the road with just a bit of mechanical knowledge.

That is a subject all to itself.

In about 60-some years in radio, with towers in swamps, on hilltops, in tidal flats, in industrial parks, on mountains and just "outside of town" I never, ever found a dead or wounded bird at the base of a tower or even on the property. And those locations were everywhere from Argentina to Mexico to Puerto Rico and then New York, Ohio, DC, VA, AL, TX, AZ, CA and even Pakistan.

There have been numerous pieces of legislation intended to protect birds, yet the birds truly seem to be smarter than our legislators.

They don't hit towers which are, or should be lighted, but they fly into wind mills?

You are certainly correct about legislators vs birds. The legislators seem never to think of unintended consequences.
 
The vultures use the cell phone tower near me as a meeting place so they don't have a problem with it. But it's more like the WKRP tower than most radio towers.

It's probably the DSP tuner, and it's probably a good one. DSP chips have built in RF amps, and the DSP itself can be set to reduce noise to a certain extent, and DSP works quite well in bringing in distant stations. The chip 'tunes' itself to the antenna used, so even a smallish AM antenna will pull in a lot of stations. My Radio Shack Pocket Radio (with DSP chip inside) pulls in a lot of AM stations with just a short, 50mm or so loopstick inside.
 
Beautiful well maintained tower, I remember when they took down the old WKDN 300' old unit and erected the new unpainted strobe current one and used a chopper to install the 4 bay antenna, fun to watch, this was fall of 1978. They also replaced the just as old second AM smaller tower with a thin unpainted unlit one, to complete the directional pattern. I was told that the owners would not allow any devices on the tower no matter how much they would pay notice the tower is bare. When the new owners of the defunct WSNJ planned to move the 107.9 frequency into the city metro, they begged to locate on that tower and were refused, so they opted Liberty One as a second choice..
