2. 640 KFI Los Angeles
3. 660 KTNN Window Rock
4. 770 KKOB Albuquerque
5. 840 KOA Denver
6. 960 KKNT

10. ?

Hardly touched, except for late night AM listening (a summertime tradition of mine since 6th grade).

KOA is actually 8~Fifty, KLL....right next door to Landfill 8~Sixty!

If nighttime listening is allowed, then for the ever youthful D.A.:

WKBW 15~Twenty out of Buffalo

CKLW The BIG 8 from the Motor City

WADO 12~Eighty in Noo Yawk. Spanish during the day, and Rocko the Jocko at night.

WOWO 11~Ninety from Ft Wayne when they were 50kw nites

WCFL from Chicago...a 'CFL of a town (tough to get with WINS @ 10~Ten, but worth it)

I didn't move to Phoenix (from Indiana), until 1973. In Indiana, I only knew that two radio stations existed, WLS & WCFL.

You didn't listen to WIFE, WNDE, WXLW, WAKY, WOWO, and/or CKLW?

I lived too far from Indy to pick up WIFE and WXLW, and I think WNDE didn't go Top-40 until 1976? I listened to WOWO a couple times when on vacation in NC. WOWO was more of an AC format I think, so didn't interest me. WLS and WCFL were playing the music I wanted to hear, so I didn't do much searching for other stations. Of course I later learned of the Indy stations, after getting into radio, and would have loved to have worked at them. I did apply for a job at WNDE, in 1977. I still have the rejection letter, but they did recommend me to another station in Huntsville, AL.

I take it you were from NW Indiana? If so, you probably wouldn't have received WIFE (they were directional to protect Madison WI), and WXLW & WNAP were co-channel with then-WJPC & WXRT, respectively. And that's too far away to hear WAKY out of Louisville.

WNDE and WXLW went Top 40 in late 1972 or early '73 (I forget the exact dates) - WIFE was on the decline by then.

Digital tuning frees us from the tyranny of linear dial positions and corresponding pushbuttons.

::)

Hey, YOU try to top "Happy Hour is the hour after everyone from Happy Hour has left." (http://bloatedpenguin.mikescottlew.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/dos-equis.jpg)

My AM presets:

#1 = 620 KTAR AM (for the D-backs and Suns)
#2 = 910 KGME (for the Coyotes)
#3 = 1060 KDUS (this will change back to KNX 1070 after ASU baseball loses today to South Carolina :'( )
#4 = 1230 KOY
#5 = 1260 KBSZ
#6 = 1440 KAZG (My favorite station by far)

As a side note, there are many of us, it seems, that have KNX 1070 as a night-time preset. I guess we all want to hear how bad the 5 is through south L.A. and how long it takes the 91 to recover around Green River Road. Got to love traffic and weather together every ten minutes on the 5's! ;D

Except we don't get Sig Alerts in our traffic.

Thank you Fred Bergendorf for the KNX traffic sounder that is so great, it's still in-use since 1969. "Boo-boo-boo (boo-boo-boo-boo)." I LOVE it.

Paging Mr. Oaktree. Right? ;)

Maybe it's a sly retort to Mayor Philiberto and the rest of the open borders crowd. ;)

There's a Sig alert in the Media Hut parking lot everytime the Gremlin rolls in! That boo-boo-boox2 sounder clears the lot of all the gila monsters, scorpions and day laborers.

Your Gremlin could cause a Sig Alert every time you Buckeye Boyz hop on any lane of the I-10! Especially with all that oil leakage since '76!

Sig Alert: right lane closed for cleanup.

I don't listen to Radio Disney, but there was a time I used to listen to Radio AAHS when there was seriously a limited source for top 40 and rhythmic hits in Az. "Coco Jumbo" by Mr. President was one of my favorites, in addition to "Captain Planet, he's a hero! gonna take pollution down to zero"!

This was not in the 60's though :(

Akbar's '76 Gremlin can be the latest "poster boy" for BP...especially after we photoshop in
Tony Hayward driving it to his yacht club. ;D

You asked for the late 60's AM pushbuttons...

990 KTKT Frank Kalil, Joe Bailey
1010 KCAC Toad Hall, William Edward Compton
1060 KUPD Bill Heywood
1230 KRIZ Joe Light, Phil Motta,
1360 KRUX Bobby Pooh Shannon, Rhett Hamilton Walker I

manually: tuned to 1320 KCPX, 1520 KOMA and 950 KIMN and night for DX
::)

Still feels weird not to hear the smooth, mellow tones (ha!) of Bill Keane as the sounder trails out. Then again, in the winter, I still expect to hear Jere Laird reporting liiiiive from the Pacific Stock Exchange in the early morning hours...
