@Ai4i, can you receive WMVP in South Florida?
I have never heard them, but 89WLS was one of my regulars to listen to back in the day (night). 'CFL's Barney Pip had a short gig on Miami's WWOK (1260) back then, though.

One of the things that really hurts WMVP to the west and southwest during the day is WCAZ 990 in Carthage. The little 1000 watt station that really gets out.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Where I went to college was about 45 miles northwest of WCAZ and about 30 miles west of the Mississippi River. At that location WCFL was clearly audible. But not exactly comfortably listenable due to it being "stepped on" rather significantly by WCAZ. Mimo is absolutely correct, WCAZ had/has an impressive daytime signal for 1,000 watts.

WCAZ at that time actually signed off at 5pm Central time on most days. So when they left the air during months of longer daylight, WCFL emerged from the splatter quite nicely. At least until they went to their night pattern.

Schmave, do you remember WHTH (now on 790), Newark, OH being on 1000?

Reynoldsburg, Ohio: Nothing daytime, always WMVP with a very good signal at night. It's always the first Chicago 50K to come in; I've personally heard it as early as 3 p.m. in the winter months. Obviously the directional signal is a help.
Also have been on the backside of their night signal when I visit family in Naperville, Illinois, and the difference is very noticeable even that close. A cousin who lives there has commented on how tough it is to hear 1000 in parts of town before sunrise. The only time I ever visited DeKalb, many years ago, I (tried to) listened to a Bulls game on the drive back to Chicago and it was rough going until much closer to about Aurora.

I just checked 1000 AM here in Northwest Arkansas -- On the frequency, I heard WMVP, Chicago -- for the first time -- for about two minutes,
before their signal disappeared (probably switched to nighttime power/pattern) at 4:30 PM CST. Chicago was mentioned when I heard the station signal.

Good time of the year for some afternoon DX when the days are short. I've often heard stations at this time of the year before pattern changes that I couldn't get at other times during the year.

Isn't KTOK what you usually hear on 1000?

Yes -- But in this case, I heard WMVP -- Theirs was the only signal I heard at the time. I'm not sure if KTOK was off the air, or if their signal was not heard because of conditions. After the WMVP signal power/pattern switch, I later heard a weak mix of station signals. One of them could have been KTOK. I hear KTOK often -- The closest station I've heard on 1000 here. But there may be other stations I may hear instead of theirs sometimes. I'm more likely to hear KTOK at night when listening for their signal.

Here in Wood Dale, IL (near NW suburb of Chicago):

Daytime: WMVP
Nightime: WMVP

DX catches: In the good old days (1970's-1980's), WCFL used to have a regular silent period every Monday morning, right after midnight on Sunday night. This of course produced some DX opportunities. This used to be the best bet to hear AM station from Washinton state as KOMO (Seattle) which used to be audible in the Chicago area most of the time during the WCFL silent period. My other 3 catches besides KOMO are KTOK (Oklahoma City, OK), XEOY (Mexico City) and HJAQ (Cartagen, Colombia).

Not exactly sure when the regular silent period stopped, but it must have been around the time WCFL became WLUP AM.

Also sometimes around 2006, WMVP operated under special temporary authority as a diplex from the WLS site in Tinley Park at a reduced power. If I remember correctly this arrangement was only during daytime, so the workers could work on the replacement towers. During the night they would switch back to the Downer grove site.

BTW my profile picture shows the new 3-tower array of WMVP in Downers Grove, IL

You must have a very good radio to hear WMVP during the day. Can you hear it daytime in the summer too?

it is the stock radio in my 2011 Malibu. I've noticed the tuner in it is better than the factory stereo in my old 03 Ranger. One thing to note is you go down "to the valley" to get to LeSueur. This helps block (or hinder) some Minneapolis stations due to the elevation change. When I was in suburban Mpls (25 miles away) I would never hear some of these stations during the day. Now that I'm far enough from the cities (60 miles from downtown) that I get so much more on AM then I use to. I can hear some Chicago stations during the day. Today it was WMVP because they were talking about the Cubs and Sox.

Summertime I dont know because I moved a month ago and just got the car 6 weeks ago.

On my simple radio shack portable radio I get WMVP at night

I didn't think WMVP sent enough signal that way that you would hear it during the day. I would think WSCR, WBBM, & WLS do better. Am I right?

Day/night - KOMO Seattle (News). They put in a decent daytime signal even here in Yakima, on the east side of the Cascades. Unlike when I lived in Seattle, 1000 can reveal other stations underneath when conditions are good.
Also heard on 1000: KKIM Albuquerque, NM (Religion), the couple times I've heard them they were running 10KW day power; KCEO Vista, CA (EWTN, heard at least 3-4 times in the past few years running day power accidentally at night); XEOY Mexico City (heard 1/23/17, got a 'Mil' ID from them during good conditions down that way)

WANTED ON 1000 - WMVP Chicago, no doubt. They obviously null west but maybe I'll catch them accidentally running NDA one night and they will be under KOMO. Also KSOO Sioux Falls (ex-KXRB) would be nice, but it would have to be at SD sunrise on 10,000 watts.

Crain: That would be some catch if you ever hear WMVP out your way. I did hear KOMO at least once here in the Chicago area when then WCFL was silent one Monday morning.

I've never personally heard KOMO here in the Chicago area. Not for lack of effort. With WCFL/WMVP off (or nulled), XEOY is the most likely station to come through.

As for WCFL/WMVP on daytime skywave in Minnesota. I've never heard it in or around Minneapolis, but I have heard it a couple of times around Kansas City. Most recently about eight years ago one late morning in November. Going back to my days where I was in the Twin Cities on a frequent basis in the 1980s and 1990s, WCFL/WMVP nighttime in that area was a different story. The Chicago 1000 was usually reliable and listenable. But not as strong as the non-directional 50KW Chichgo blowtorches.
