AM Frequency of the Week: 1000

I've never personally heard KOMO here in the Chicago area. Not for lack of effort. With WCFL/WMVP off (or nulled), XEOY is the most likely station to come through.

As for WCFL/WMVP on daytime skywave in Minnesota. I've never heard it in or around Minneapolis, but I have heard it a couple of times around Kansas City. Most recently about eight years ago one late morning in November. Going back to my days where I was in the Twin Cities on a frequent basis in the 1980s and 1990s, WCFL/WMVP nighttime in that area was a different story. The Chicago 1000 was usually reliable and listenable. But not as strong as the non-directional 50KW Chichgo blowtorches.

Mostly when AM 1000 in Chicago was off I heard XEOY and sometimes KTOK, but KOMO was rare--just once maybe twice.

Isn't KTOK what you usually hear on 1000?

When I lived in Tulsa (+\-75 miles from Fayetteville) in the 70's, KTOK was ok during the day but mostly disappeared at night. XEOY was usually dominant at night, heard WCFL occasionally at sunset, caught KOMO early Monday mornings.

Baldwin Co., Alabama:

Daytime it's local WJNZ in Robertsdale, a 1 kW daytimer that has a habit of staying on late during high school sports season.

Nights more often than not is KTOK, and WMVP is not really that common. XEOY is audible too for short periods. Right now I actually have XEOY and another unidentified Spanish language station fighting it out.

Daytime in S.A. is normally semi-local KBIB in Marion, which has been mysteriously off air for a week now. With it gone, I can sometimes hear a very weak XENLT “Radio Formula” in Nuevo Laredo. Also, there’s a weak harmonic of local 860 KONO that can be heard on all my radios and even on the car radio around town.

At sunset KTOK and XEOY come up, with the former being most dominant.

XEOY dominates throughout the night, with XENLT or KKIM sometimes popping up for a bit if I aim more E/W. I used to hear XERZ in León at night occasionally, but it’s been a couple of years.

At sunrise XENLT comes up a lot stronger, as do KTOK and XEFV “La Rancherita” in Ciudad Juárez when they go to day power.

Also, just before local sunrise lately, I sometimes hear a faint classic hits/oldies station from E/W. But it has never hung around long enough to ID.
I've caught KTOK only once in my 3 weeks of DXing north of Austin.

KTOK has a very odd nighttime propagation. It should send more signal to western Oklahoma and the High Plains, vs. the SE.

Due to the original NARBA treaty and subsequent joint treaties with Mexico, they have to protect the Mexican border. They can not send more signal to the WSW or SW.

While they specifically protect XEOY in Mexico City, the treaty requires protection of the entire border.

In any case, KTOK has no interest in "the plains". It is interested in its local Oklahoma City market, about 25% of which it does not have a 10m mV/m signal over even in the daytime so it is not even a full market signal there. That, in part, explains why it is 20th in 25-54 in the Summer 2021 book.

So you just bumped a 3 yr old thread just to answer someome

Thought you going to add to this thread about what's on 1000 in your area
Another half-decade old thread brought back for no reason.

My response was to a 2018 posting. And it pertains to receiving a station on the post's frequency in my area today.

You are confusing the topic header which is "Frequency of the Week". Once the week is up, generally, everyone moves on. Please stop reactivating very old threads.

Essentially, that was my intent when I took over (more or less by default) the "Frequency of the Week".threads. Prior to my doing that, we were posting them at random. The result was that some frequencies were coming up more than once a year, while others were getting ignored repeatedly.

For those who are new here, (and we're delighted to have you), what I've been doing is alternating between what used to be known as the clear channels, then moving to the former "regional" and "local" (or graveuard) channels. Thus, it takes us a little over two years to cover the complete AM band. If anything comes up on any channel that hasn't been discusserd recently, IMHO, the better place for it is in "Post Your Latest DX".

Finally a word, if I may, about our current FOTW cycle. This week, we'll revisit 1220. Next week, in keeping with the former "clears" comprising the current cycle, we jump to 1500. There will be seven more channels after that. Then around mid March, we will have completed the cycle we've been in. After that, if we're all in agreement, we can start another AM cycle of "regionals and locals" beginning with 550. If we want, I'm happy to keep posting new threads every Sunday, or someone else can take over, or we can go to a different format, or drop this feature entirely. I'm fine with whatever the group decides. And as always, I defer to any thoughts, suggestions, or guidelines David and/or Frank might have.

Personally, I'd like to see FOTW continue in one form or another. It's a guaranteed weekly conversation starter, and it prompts those of us who are interested to check out frequencies that they might have overlooked for a while. And yes, I've been talking about AM, but I;d also like to see FM get equal time, but I'd defer that to those more knowledgeable about the FM band than me.

I would like AM frequency of the week to continue as is. I did the previous cycle of FM Frequency of the week, but wasn't ready for another 3 year cycle, so I'm glad Zantenna has taken the mantle.

You're doing a good job covering all the frequencies. Keep it up.
I didn't understand the backstory to this, so thank you for the explanation.

The regular review of frequencies is very interesting, and useful as formats and stations change over time.

Our only administrative concern is "rebirthing" old threads which usually contain out of date data on stations, formats, and other factors. Frank will be giving threads a closure date; any update should be the subject of a new thread.

…and I didn't know there was a time limit implied, either. I'm sure I've resurrected more than a few old threads without checking the post dates.
I think there's a consensus building that instead of bumping old threads, why not just post new developments in the "post your latest DX" thread. Or perhaps, better yet, just start a new thread.

Closer to your neighborhood, We have our usual beach place booked for February (exactly next door to the Florabama on the Florida side). It's been three years since we've been able to spend a February there, so I'm expecting more than a few new developlments to keep me busy with my radio(s). Looking forward to it.
