AM Frequency of The Week: 1050

Last time I remember, CHUM/Toronto was dominant on 1050 here, though not terribly strong - certainly not as strong as WHO/1040 or KYW/1060 are here at night.

And IIRC, I was in the car with Scott Fybush when he took a picture of the 1050 in the Cincinnati market, just across the river in Northern KY...and I'm not altogether sure Scott wasn't driving at the time...

During the day here in East Texas it's really tough to come up with anything at all, but KCHN can sometimes be heard. At night it's all XEG.

Perhaps the folks at KCHN realized that their 600 watt proposal was going to be murdered by 150,000 watt XEG and saved the expense.

I think you're right and I wonder how much money they spent on engineering studies alone, trying to get nighttime service. It was amazing that the FCC actually issued KCHN a construction permit for those nighttime facilities back in '07. Multicultural allowed the CP to expire in March of last year.

From Kailua-Kona, HI (Big Island), I picked up KCTC (San Mateo) last September...at night, of course. Amazing what salt water can do for a 10kw signal. Otherwise, I live in the Bay Area so KCTC is all I can get. I'm going to HI again next month and I'll see what else I can find on 1050...and other freqs too.

Hawaii is a great place to DX from. I'll be looking forward to your reports.

I checked out 1050 on my best radio after posting in this thread, and it turns out to be a fight between CHUM and WEPN...each fading in for a while, and even quasi-listenable, for periods of time.
