AM Frequency of the week: 1230

These next two weeks we visit two "graveyard" channels, First up 1230.

Far northwest suburban Chicago,,,,,

Days: A weak WCLO from Janesville, WI. About 50 miles to my northwest. WJOB from Hammond, IN underneath. About 65 miles to my southeast.

Nights: Typical graveyard channel slop. I'm a latecomer to GY channel DX, but I do enjoy it. My latest catch on 1230 was WSOO from Sault Ste. Marie, MI a few months back. Roughly 300 miles from my location.

Other Location: On the Arctic SDR this winter the Czech Republic station on 1233 was a nightly regular with a good signal. Easy to identify with music. I didn't know what it was until CADXER posted about it several weeks ago,

Chicago by the lakefront:

Daytime it's WJOB in Hammond, IN which is near Gary. It comes in pretty well.

Nighttime it's a bunch of signals mashed up. If I put my radio on my south-facing window in my concrete building, then with some regularity I will hear WIBQ in Terre Haute, IN, probably since it's directly to my south.

East Tennessee: Days-nothing really. Closest station is WANO, Pineville TN.
Night--Graveyard mess.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio area. Whatever the former WCOL was on any given week. WDBZ, Cincinnati wasn't much of a factor. Nights was a graveyard mess.

I worked at a 1230, WSAL, Logansport IN. Nothing really IDed when we signed off at midnight. Heading toward Lafayette, we could get WJOB, Hammond IN.

In the near north Chicago suburbs WJOB with a fair signal. I can hear WCLO faintly in the background. At night simply "a graveyard smash"....I mean mess.

West Central Georgia:

Days: WAUD Auburn, Alabama 1000 watts "The Voice of Auburn" (also known as "the 1000 watt blowtorch") - good signal

Nights: WAUD with weaker signal

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WJOB with decent signal
Nightime: usual graveyard mess

DX/RETRO: other stations heard on this frequency include WCLO (Janesville, W), WJBC (Bloomington, IL), WLLR (Moline, IL) and KSEY (Seymour, TX) on a DX test in 2013.

Reynoldsburg, Ohio ...
Local WYTS day and night. As gr8 alluded to earlier, that frequency has been through a lot over the years. Heritage WCOL, maybe the most popular station in the market in the 60s ... and just in the time I've been aware of the radio world, it's also been a news talker, sports talker, oldies and now the mostly forgotten AM outlet for W287CP (105.3), hip hop and throwbacks. WYTS actually stands for "Your Talk Station," which come from its stint as a conservative talk outlet in the late 2000s.
1,000-watt signal that isn't all that special, as could be expected. I am about 12 miles east of the tower and, at least in the days when I tuned in at night, could hear some faint flutter underneath the programming. I've heard the last traces of WYTS at night about 30 miles east of Columbus in Thornville, Ohio.
WYTS also fights co-channel battles on the fringes of its coverage area with the aforementioned WDBZ in Cincinnati, WIRO in Ironton and WCWA in Toledo.

Ooh! A graveyard channel this week - my favorite.

In Ellensburg, when I can null severe splatter from KXLE-1240, it's KDYM Sunnyside WA (Spanish Christian).

Also heard, nearly all at night
KOZI Chelan WA (News/Talk)
KSBN Spokane WA (Business Talk)
KWYZ Everett WA (Korean)
KCUP Toledo OR (News/Talk)
KKOR Astoria OR (Classic Hits)
KHSN Coos Bay OR (ESPN)
KSJK Talent OR (Jefferson Public Radio)
KYQT Burns OR (Classic Country)
KRYN Gresham OR (Spanish Christian)
KWG Stockton CA (Catholic)
KPRL Paso Robeles CA (News/Talk)
KORT Grangeville ID (Classic Hits)
KBAR Burley ID (News/Talk)
KZTQ Reno NV (Adult Hits, last logged as Classic Hip Hop 'Power 92.5')
CJNL Merritt BC (News/Talk, relays CHNL Kamloops)

From Tyler, Texas: day and night, 1230 is a typical mess of stations typical of a graveyard. If the conditions are right, Oldies formatted KSST Sulphur Springs, Texas "KSST AM 1230" will find its way here. I do have a January 2013 log for Regional Mexican KQUE Houston "La Ranchera", but that was a stroke of luck more than anything else.

In Atlanta, that spot is occupied by WFOM, ESPN sports talk out of Marietta GA. At one time they were top 40 format.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: A weak to moderate Christian pop station, KERV "The Light," in Kerrville.

Sunset/Night: Stations that show up consistently include KSST in Sulphur Springs, KDRN in Del Rio, KSIX in Corpus Christi, KWTX in Waco, and XEIZ in Monterrey.

Sunrise: In addition to the stations above, KLVT in Loveland, TX, can usually be heard briefly at sunrise. Also, KERV is heard again.

DX/RETRO: Stations I've heard just once include XETVH in Villahermosa, Tabasco (longest catch at 877 miles); WBOK in New Orleans, LA; KFUN in Las Vegas, NM; KSFX (formerly KBCQ) in Roswell, NM; KFPW in Ft. Smith, AR; WDWR in Pensacola, FL; and KCOH in Houston (surprising since it's relatively close, but it does send its signal SE into the Gulf of Mexico).

center city philadelphia, nothing at night, day a weak but listenable wcmc wildwood, nj classic oldies, which comes a long way probably coming up delaware bay and river.

I'm about equidistant between Harrisburg (logged as WKBO) and Easton (WEEX). Although I'm midway, I'm north of being co-linear. So workmanlike nulling is possible in the day, and so they're both heard on those rare daytimes when the dial is not ablaze with the noise of commerce.

Around SRS I've gotten WFVA Fredericksburg VA. They used to be a SRS catch back near JFK Airport in Queens, too. Nice signal at those times.

Nights here I've gotten two that used to be AN regulars back in Queens -- WNOR Norfolk and WITH Baltimore. Musically, neither of them kick-@$$ anymore like they did in their 60's Top 40 heydays. But it's fun hearing them duel again.

Those last three I've got taped. In the current-climate lull here I've been xferring cassettes of DX onto mP3 form. These cassettes themselves were dubs off original 1/4-inch tape reels at a station where I worked which had some nice sonic capability.

Reminds me of 1230 at our beach vacation location. WDWR, Pensacola (23miles) produces a fair to weak daytime signal with WBOK, New Orleans (150 miles via saltwater) underneath.
