AM Frequency of The Week: 1440

Kind of piggybacking off the Radio Luxembourg thing, when I was in St. Petersburg, Russia last year, I remember hearing a very interesting station on 1440 that appeared to be playing some form of Russian Rock. It was Radio Zvezda if I recall.

What was most interesting about Russian radio was that all the western European stations that I was able to pick-up in places throughout eastern Europe, became inaudible in Russia. My favorite test station is the Armed Forces Radio Network on 873 MW out of Frankfurt, Germany. This station has a powerful signal and is audible throughout much of Europe. I've heard it in Lithuania, Norway, Denmark, Croatia and England. But, as soon as I set foot in Russia, there's Radio Rossia beaming through on 873 MW. It seems that most of the western European stations have Russian counterparts on the same frequency, maybe as a hold-over from the Cold War preventing Russians from hearing Western broadcasts.

In any event, Radio Zvezda and Radio Luxembourg have nothing on our local 1440 here in Phoenix. Long live the Lumberyard! ;D

Good stuff Icangelp and asugeorge....Thanks!

I, of course, have nothing to post on the Lamptimer thread, but it definitely makes for good reading...and a few laughs!

In all my admiration for it, I just realized I've never posted in the World Famous Lamptimer Thread, thus, I only see it when I manage to check the Phoenix board.

Interesting threads. I've got some lamptimers that we use to light up the house when we travel. Maybe I should start a radio station.

Reminds me of a song by The Browns from back in the early 1960's, "The Old Lamp Timer", or was it "Lamplighter"? I'm old and I get confused.

A Google search reveals that it was called "The Old Lamplighter". Too bad...it would have been perfect to add into KAZG's rotation.

Play on words.

I was alive but young when the Brown's version of that song was popular in 1960. "Ah yes, I remember it well."

Vermilion, OH:

This is one tough frequency to catch anything on here as it's a very weak WHKZ/Warren, OH during the day plus some slop from WLEC 1450 in Sandusky, OH. At night, it's a graveyard-like mess of unknown stations.

Late to this thread, I guess... Located in W. Washington.

Nighttime on 1440 I hear KMED, Medford, Oregon with various talk shows, and KODL, The Dalles Oregon mixing in with oldies.

CKJR, Wetaskiwin Alberta sometimes makes an appearance from the NE, and has classic hits / oldies as well as South Asian programming. I've logged it about three times -- the first time it was playing classic hits or oldies, and there were a couple clear IDs. A few weeks later I heard it at sunset skip and early evening, with South Asian programming (and no IDs). Was able to "ID" it because one of the South Asian ads mentioned a housing complex and realtor located in the Edmonton area.

From NE NC car radio. 1440 days is WKLV Blackstone, VA. Sunrise/sunset WAJR Morganton, WV, WHIS Bluefield, WV, WNPV Lansdale, PA and WGVL Greenville, SC.

In Bellingham, WA. It's usually KODL, The Dalles, OR. But a few months ago, I picked up what seems to be a public station (all I caught was "Support 1440....." before it vanished into the murk, voiced by a lady with a distinct, public radio voice.....)

Many stations on 1440 are lower power. Some were 500 watts night nondirectional from the early days of radio that were previously on 1410.

WBCM, now WMAX, was 1/0.5 U1 (I still like the concise notation from WRTH for stations like this). They were in what I have come to call a Delta area, where rivers all come together and there is a lot of silt carried to low lying areas near large bodies of water, in this case Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. Conductivity was excellent there. They moved inland further and went 5/2.5 U4. Even though the nulls are very shallow like the old nondirectional inverse fields, the conductivity does not seem as high from the new site. You used to hear it well over a lot of Southeastern Michigan, but not as well now in some areas. It is much better to the north in the major lobe. WCHB, now WDRJ, came on with two six tower arrays for day and night and eventually 1 U4. It comes in well in the major lobe, but that is very narrow, and the conductivity doesn't seem to be as good as M-3 would suggest. It is heard in the Detroit area day and night. It was in the umbrella of protection of WBCM, a former III-B, and has a relatively low NIF.

No public stations on 1440. Perhaps KMED Medford, OR or CKJR Wetaskiwin, AB?

Interesting......A station looking for advertisers?

Right now in Vermilion, OH I'm hearing a station playing a mix of songs like what you would hear on a Jack-FM type station and taking requests. They gave an ID that sounded like WCYX 1440 94.5 and 95.3
