Kind of piggybacking off the Radio Luxembourg thing, when I was in St. Petersburg, Russia last year, I remember hearing a very interesting station on 1440 that appeared to be playing some form of Russian Rock. It was Radio Zvezda if I recall.
What was most interesting about Russian radio was that all the western European stations that I was able to pick-up in places throughout eastern Europe, became inaudible in Russia. My favorite test station is the Armed Forces Radio Network on 873 MW out of Frankfurt, Germany. This station has a powerful signal and is audible throughout much of Europe. I've heard it in Lithuania, Norway, Denmark, Croatia and England. But, as soon as I set foot in Russia, there's Radio Rossia beaming through on 873 MW. It seems that most of the western European stations have Russian counterparts on the same frequency, maybe as a hold-over from the Cold War preventing Russians from hearing Western broadcasts.
In any event, Radio Zvezda and Radio Luxembourg have nothing on our local 1440 here in Phoenix. Long live the Lumberyard! ;D
