AM Frequency of the Week - 1560 kHz

schmave said:
How is KGOW reception within the immediate area jd? The new patterns finally took effect shortly after I left the area three years ago, so I never got to experience the improved signal.

The day pattern is a blaster around Houston but it's still littered with "holes," places with dramatic drops in strength, some of them in very important and heavily populated areas. The changes in the pattern did very little to improve the overall coverage, since they still have to protect numerous stations in various directions (even some "phantom" stations in Mexico that will never sign on). The nighttime coverage is great as long as you're on the west or northwest side and within the single, narrow lobe running from the transmitter site southeast to Bellaire. Outside that path (like to the north in The Woodlands or anywhere in Montgomery County), it's either unimpressive or non-existent.

I've been hearing KGOW pretty regularly pre-sunrise here on my way to work (WI/IL stateline area, between Kenosha and Waukegan). I just noticed it dominating the frequency one morning, and it seems pretty regular most mornings. Evenings are typically WQEW.

Daytime, a very weak WGLB Elm Grove (Milwaukee). This station is aimed primarily north, and barely makes it to the Milwaukee county line to the south.

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):

Daytime: usually either splatter from local 1570 WISP(Catholic station) or NYC's WQEW(Radio Disney)
Night: always WQEW

From Tampa -

Daytime - Nothing but splatter from WAMA.

Nighttime - It's an interesting selection.

Turn the radio one way, it's KGOW from Houston.

Turn it the other way, it's WQEW from New York.

From NE NC days 1560 is WSBV South Boston, VA. Sunset have heard WAGL Lancaster, SC and at night it's all WQEW New York.

From St. Louis:

Daytime: Usually nothing; even the 1000-watt KTUI Sullivan, MO, only about 60 miles away, is a rarity.

Nighttime: A two-way battle between WPAD Paducah and WQEW. KGOW can be heard at sunset, but not with any regularity.

From Indian Land (Ft. Mill), SC...

Days: WAGL from Lancaster, SC (50KW 13 Miles Away)
Nights: WQEW from New York, NY (50KW Many Miles Away)
