AM Frequency of The Week: 1590

What have you gotten on 1590?

Here, I've gotten my local KLFE Seattle (Russian/English Religious), KTIL (formerly KMBD) Tillamook, OR (News/Talk) and KLIV San Jose, CA (News). Mostly a jumble, but I've caught out these three at night.

-crainbebo

Mostly sideband splatter from KKAD.

Haven't really paid much attention to 1590 in Pendleton, tho. (KKAD's pretty faint on the other side of the Cascades, at least around there, but still perceptible.) Maybe I'll check it next time I go there, if I remember.

In the daytime it's very, very, very faint WFTH in Richmond, VA about 95 miles to the south, at night it's the Akron, OH 1590 though rather weak.

Warminster PA:

In the daytime, it's WPWA from Aston PA(in Chester County). At night, 1590 is usually a mess,
including WPWA and WQQW from Connecticut.

Coldwater, MI:

Coldwater is the home of WTVB. A 5kw daytime/1kw nighttime facility.

At night, a very faint WAKR can be detected underneath, despite a lobe right at the city.

Nothing on 1590 in the LA area, mainly splatter from local KBLA.

A bit off-topic, but KBLA is so strong in my area that it causes splatter on 1540-1710, though it's most likely my walkman overloading.

El Cajon / La Mesa, CA...

day, barefoot - nothing
day, with Select-A-Tenna - very weak KUNX Ventura, CA, or possibly XEYX Mexicali, Baja

night - usually IBOC hiss from KMIK Tempe, AZ (my strongest blowtorch at night, regularly hitting 56,25 on my PL-380's signal strength indicator, sometimes 62,25 (a higher level than some 1kw-or-more locals less than 10 miles away))

WAKR really gets out; it was regular at night in Dayton and I've heard it West of Indianapolis. Here in the Knoxville area I heard WAIK in Galesburg IL last night presumably on its 5KW day power, not 55 watts.

Funny, you should mention WAKR. Back in he early 1960's, WAKR was a nightly signal in Indianapolis. They had top 40 format, and a very good evening dj.

I also heard WAIK at night but in September of last year. They either frequently "forget", or maybe their engineer goes on vacation in September.

Here in SW Ohio
These days, WAKR is the most frequent station heard.
Other contemporary IDs
WCSL Cherryville NC winter sunset
WVNL Tuscumbia AL winter sunrise
WSRW Hillsboro OH winter sunrise
WTVB Coldwater MI night time
WCGO Evanstan IL night time
WGYJ Artmore AL night time
WAIK Galesburg IL night time (Day power?)

Far Northwest suburbs of Chicago....

A rather puny WCGO daytime. Nighttime used to regularly be WAKR around here, but now it's a total mess.

Daytime here in Rochester NY, 1590 is dominated (weakly, anyway) by WAUB Auburn, about 50 miles east of here. There's another 1590 right here in Monroe County, WASB Brockport, about 20 miles west of me, but they have a deep null to the east and a transmitter site that's deteriorated into near-uselessness. WASB is actually a pretty deep DX catch for me here. I used to hear a third upstate NY 1590, WEHH Elmira Heighs-Horseheads (about 90 miles south) better than WASB, but WEHH moved to 1600 a few years ago.

WAKR owns the frequency at night here.

Ah, yes! WASB used to be WADD "The Big Plus!" (yeah, right!), originally on 1560. It moved to 1590 in the 70's. JIBGUY might be able to chime in on this "unique" station. From what I've gathered, it never quite worked well over the years.

1590 is a real mess in the Southern states. There seems to be a lot of stations on that frequency there and at night, many power down to double digit wattage. Which really doesn't make it worth running at night for some stations.

In Texas about 80 miles southeast of Dallas it's a weak signal during the day from KLRK Mexia (muh-Hay-uh), just east of Waco. At night 1590 is usually a mess, with Radio Disney from Houston (KMIC) coming through especially around sunrise and sunset, but quite often the station on top is KVGB Great Bend, Kansas.

Here, near downtown St. Petersburg, local WRXB 1590 (COL=St. Pete Beach, but towers are in s.w. St. Pete about 4 miles from St. Pete Beach); they have recently changed from a soulful oldies format to Black gospel). At any rate, they have a strong signal here from my listening post, even though they null to the north day (lesser nulls) and night. I'm about 3.5 miles e.n.e. of their tower array)

At my second listening post about 73 miles n.n.e. of here I can weakly receive them during the day (just barely) and just before sunset (especially during the winter month) I can pick up WPSL 1590 (Port St. Lucie, FL - which is nearly midway between West Palm and Vero Beach); at night 73 miles n.n.e. of St. Pete, it's a jumbled mess, sounds as though I've tuned to one of the graveyards; although sometimes in the mess, I receive a station out of Georgia. (Albany, GA?).

drt,
st. petersburg,fl

1590 here is a mess. At night, I usually get WKTP Jonesborough, TN weakly. During the day, it is usually a very weak signal from WPUL in the Daytona Beach area. It travels well with just 1000 watts. WCAM is not a factor here, nor is any other station.

During HS football season (like now), a bunch of overpower stations mix in at night with games.

I guess you haven't tuned to 1590 lately. WQQW has been off the air for years. I think they went silent in 1992.

I don't really DX AM these days, but I believe WPSN from Northest Pernnsylvania comes in weakly during the day here in Poughkeepsie, NY. A number of stations in the mix at night.... tonight the dominant one is ESPN with Ravens-Jets football. Don't know who this is.

WCGO is Okay here, but going from 3.5 to 7 kW didn't really bump up the signal by much. It's really solid south and east of Northbrook (=
Must not be too efficient of a tower! Concur on WAKR. Used to be "armchair copy" in the 60's and 70's...now it's unlistenable at night..

What I've ever heard on the frequency: 40 miles NW of Chicago City Limits - Crystal Lake, IL
WCGO Evanston, IL
WAKR Akron, OH
WIKX New Richmond, WI Haven't heard in years.
WTVB Coldwater, IL Still hear occasionally.
WAIK Galesburg, IL Still hear occasionally.
WGBW Two Rivers, WI Haven't heard in years.
WPVL Platteville, WI Still hear occasionally.
WNTS Indianapolis (Beach Grove), IN Not heard since it became an all-night operation.
