AM Frequency of The Week: 1590

KLIV very weak from Vallejo

In Texas about 80 miles southeast of Dallas it's a weak signal during the day from KLRK Mexia (muh-Hay-uh), just east of Waco. At night 1590 is usually a mess, with Radio Disney from Houston (KMIC) coming through especially around sunrise and sunset, but quite often the station on top is KVGB Great Bend, Kansas.

Hey jd, what is Mexia's 1590 airing now? Are they simulcasting FM sister's "The Beat", or is it still country?

As for Houston 1590 KMIC is a local. At night you can hear another station underneath it, but just barely. Never has been good enough to ID, and nulling KMIC from my location is near impossible.

Warminster PA:

In the daytime, it's WPWA from Aston PA(in Chester County). At night, 1590 is usually a mess,
including WPWA and WQQW from Connecticut.

I guess you haven't tuned to 1590 lately. WQQW has been off the air for years. I think they went silent in 1992.

I don't really DX AM these days, but I believe WPSN from Northest Pernnsylvania comes in weakly during the day here in Poughkeepsie, NY. A number of stations in the mix at night.... tonight the dominant one is ESPN with Ravens-Jets football. Don't know who this is.

Then around 96 WQQW 1590 Waterbury, WLNG 1600 Sag Harbor, and a couple other stations were bought by WWRL 1600 NYC and shut down so that WWRL could boost their signal.

WAKR, of course, but it's a NE Ohio local.

Up here in Southeast Michigan, WAKR used to really come in quite well at night, also. Along with WCFL (WMVP), WLS, WOWO, WBZ, WKYC (WTAM), and a few other 50 kW AMs, WAKR and WING were quite reliable when searching the dial for your favorite songs. There was some interference, and a heterodyne which sounded cool when superimposed on the fast phased part of "Crimson and Clover". They must have been at low modulation because I hardly ever IDed it. Could have been Coldwater. I haven't heard WCGO 1590 since it was WONX, but I did hear WCGO 1600 quite frequently at night. I think WAKR's close in skywave performance in some directions is due to the different height towers. WHLX is there in the daytime, and interferes with WAKR now at night.

In Durham, North Carolina, daytimes is local WHPY in Clayton, NC, while at night it's WKPT in KIngsport, Tennessee.

Sorry it took so long to reply to that, but the last time I heard them they were still country. Somebody closer to the source could confirm this, but I think they're currently silent while they're waiting on their application for an upgrade to be approved. For now I'm hearing a weak KMIC during the day and a similarly weak ESPN station, which turns out to be KGAS in Carthage.

Here in Metro Quakake PA, WMIM 1590 Mount Carmel was a steady thing, at least for the times they'd been on the air. Pretty good signal along I-81 into Hazleton. They were considered a 'local'.

They had signed on as a 500-watt omni daytime, from a single tower on the western edge of Mount Carmel. The stick, about forty feet high like all 1590 sticks, is still standing. When they got their nighttime regional pittance, like maybe 31 watts, they'd be on top of the channel, although barely. WAKR reigned otherwise, and often drowned them out.

WMIM was always some form of A/C - pop / Chicken Rock station with a nice sound -- well processed. Before they went dark several years ago, though, they'd gone to Standards and then to all-sports.

Nowadays, 1590 daytime is mostly a cacophany of TVI from the neighbors. I did catch the thing from Glen Burnie a few weeks back while DXing/house-sitting for a buddy in Saint Clair. They were playing some form of Soul oldies.

Fwiw: WFTH Richmond BOOMS into Central New Jersey at sunset. I caught them once after the now-dark WERA Plainfield signed off, and on the car radio at sunset they might've had a better signal in Plainfield than WERA did.

WAKR Akron used to put a nice signal into Norfolk VA -- on a clock radio. I remember the overnight guy was named Dave Davis.

Drt : Real sorry to hear abut WRXB's change. For many years, into the Nineties, they were a well-done music beacon on the AM dial.

An update to my last month's reply--I can hear WHGT Chambersburg, PA/Hagerstown, MD area on days, though the signal in my area is weak. The station appears to have upgraded its signal.
