AM Frequency of the Week: 1590

I just wonder if WDBL kept it's PSA at 500 watts. At 6AM in December or January one would think they would have a small "sky wave" that would have worked somewhere out west under the correct conditions. I haven't seen anyone posting it.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days: Mostly splatter from WWRL "New York's BIN 1600" New York, NY. Near sunset, I have received WARV Warwick, RI and WHGT Maugansville, MD.

Nights: It's usually WARV "Life Changing Radio" Warwick, RI with some splatter from WWRL. I have also received WCSL Cherryville, NC and WFTH Richmond, VA, most likely at their daytime power, in the past.

Up here in the far NW DX is just a lot less interesting than what you folks encounter. A whole lot of space and not many stations on some frequencies.

Pretty much all we hear day and night is KLFE Seattle. A Relevant Radio station. 20/5 directional. They have a two tower array that is diplexed with 1300 Seattle- on a bluff above a beach on Bainbridge Island in the middle of Puget Sound. All that salt water sure helps the groundwave in a notoriously bad conductivity area.

When the local was down one night I picked up a very faint KTIL Netarts OR. The TIL stands for Tillamook county, and some west coasters know THAT name due to the Tillamook brand of Cheese and Ice Cream. Now I am hungry!

This frequency has had lots of calls and formats- some locals might recall KUUU oldies back in the 70s. KJET Alt rock, then KQUL Cool Oldies, eventually a Z-Rock hard rock affiliate before eventually seeing the light (as it were) and heading off to various spoken word religious talk formats.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Nothing, but I have heard KEKR in Mexia, TX, a few times and KWEY in Weatherford, OK, once (both classic country) via daytime skywave.

Sunset: KEKR, KMIC “Radio Aleluya” in Houston, and KGAS “ESPN Radio” in Carthage, TX, all start to come up. Occasionally I’ll hear XEVOZ in Mexico City and KELP (Christian talk) in El Paso. When propagation is very good, KWEY will come up as well.

Night: Aiming E/W, I can hear KMIC fairly steadily. Aiming N/S, I can null it somewhat with KGAS popping up occasionally and KEKR coming up weakly and less often. Aiming NW/SE, I can hear KELP with a weak but usually readable signal.

Sunrise: It’s more of a mess with KEKR and KGAS stronger at times after going to day power. On a few occasions I’ve heard KVGB in Great Bend, KS, and XEVOZ. KMIC and KEKR are the last to fade.

DX/Retro: My one-time loggings include KDAE in Sinton, TX, KDAV in Lubbock, TX (currently silent), and KKAY in White Castle, LA.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: A weak but readable KEKR Mexia, TX at 100 miles with classic county.
Nights: KMIC Houston with Radio Aleluya programming usually dominates the channel. Sometime KGAS Carthage, TX will pop in.
Sunrise: KVGB Great Bend, KS will occasionally overtake KMIC.
