AM Frequency of the week - 1710 kHz

When is the best times to hear them?

Weekends. Mostly on Saturday late night or early Sunday morning. The Q sometimes broadcast on Friday nights also. Here is another broadcast capture below. But as that goes it is still sporadic meaning at times the Q hasn't broadcast for 6 weeks straight. Also we're approaching spring and March will probably be the last month to capture them if at all. By April the noise levels climb and the MW pirates are generally long gone and moved high up in the spectrum.

I believe the farthest west it has been captured was Alberta CN.

1710 is completely blank in Monroe. Maybe those people can start a "Big Q West" - broadcast from CA or something like that. Then maybe I can hear it.

For any of you late nighters. The "Q" is currently broadcasting. Surprising to hear this station on an early Monday morning. Fired up around 05:58z

Daytime: Nada

Nighttime: I regularly here like a murmur of something but the signal(s) never get loud enough to guess the programming much less a source. Once that TIS in New Jersey carrying NOAA weather radio made it here with some strength but its been awhile since I've even heard that.

Not sure where you're at Trav. Another DXer reported hearing the Q out of NY last night though what part of NY I'm unsure.

I meant hear obviously in my previous post, not here :(

I'm in central MD, I may try more actively to log something on AM-1710. I'm thinking my ATS-909, a loop and some headphones in a quiet place may help me bring the murmur to something I can hear.

Ok. Yes it's probably going to be a tough road to get any good copy on the Q without a phased array or something to that effect. Plus you've got Radio Celestial out of the Bronx and that NJ TIS to contend with.

The "Q" is back on right now with a CKLW Big 8 theme & sound checks from that station

I get a low power station aptly called 'AM 1710', carrying an Adult Hits format on that frequency. It broadcasts from the Buenos Aires district of Villa Urquiza, and I can only pull it on late nights. AFAIK the station is fully automated, though often carries several hours of a syndie music show. Otherwise it's just music and ads clumsily made with a unregistered version of Loquendo.

Eduardo, as far as I know, AM 1710 in Buenos Aires relays Radio Milagros FM 94.5 I'm very interested in knowing if you have ever heard other programs or other FM stations relayed over AM 1710? The reason that I'm interested is because I heard LA 2X4 FM 92.7 Buenos Aires on 1710 kHz one night last November and I've never been able to verify if it was the 1710 Buenos Aires AM station that I had.

Though AM 1710 indeed relays FM Milagros, I heard it with 'AM 1710' IDs and no mention of the FM at times. It seems they have some self-programmed music. I have never listened to La 2X4 on 1710, and I'm surprised to know that! If such thing happened to you after 0300UTC, could it be possible that you heard a harmonic of LS1 Radio de la Ciudad (1110), which relays La 2X4 overnights?
I have never listened another FM being relayed on 1710, though FM Fantástico and FM A-K 89.9 used to be heard on 1700.

While I was out this afternoon running errands, I made a quick AM bandscan from an open area, which happened to be a Home Depot parking lot. It was a good day for AM radio reception. I heard soft, maybe Christmasy-sounding music on 1710 AM. The signal sounded fairly strong. I didn't have a lot of time, so I didn't linger to hear where it might be coming from. Was it likely that Antioch, IL station?

I haven't heard the Antioch 1710, and I'm only about 25 miles away from Antioch. I'll check it out, however.

It's hard for me to imagine that Antioch station getting out here, much less with a good signal. On the other hand, in the early afternoon I was pulling in stations from the east that usually don't show up -- such as WLW, WKAR East Lansing, WRHL Rochelle, IL, WMBI Chicago, and others. I had something on 840 that was either WHAS or the station from eastern Nebraska, neither of which would ordinarily make it anywhere near here, but I didn't have time to linger and find out.

Is anyone hearing the "Radio Retén" SS Christian pirate on 1710 at night? It's been around for at least a few months. The station puts a weak to moderate signal into the San Antonio area at night.

Interesting that WRHL was in that group that you were hearing. Almost certainly daytime skywave. 250 watts and very directional to the west. I'm 40 miles northeast of Rochelle, and I never hear it. Here, daytime, it's WHFB from Benton Harbor, MI. Weak, but completely alone. It's one of those stations that, when it goes to 50-watts night power (same "severe" pattern as daytime), you can be within sight of the towers and still not hear it!
