AM Frequency of the Week: 580

Carmichael, CA

Daytime: KMJ (Weak) Fresno, CA
Nighttime: KMJ Fresno, CA

Vallejo, CA

Daytime: KMJ (Weak) Fresno, CA
Nighttime: KMJ Fresno, CA

East Tennessee: Days-Semi-local WXRH, Rockwood, TN. Sunset: Sometimes WCHS, Charleston WV.
Nights: a hodge podge.
Retro/other: WXRH has been known to be on all night, and is widely heard when it is. During one of those occasions, it made the Edinburgh, IN and Atlanta SDRs. Also caught WXRH on the Atlanta SDR one sunset session.
Edinburgh SDR also was frequently getting WELO, Tupelo, MS nightly, haven't checked lately though.

The 580 log here in NEPA has been -- you should excuse the expression -- static from the days when I first planted a longwire out the back door up the hill.

WHP Harrisburg (5000 watts omni day, 5000 directional SE w/six towers nights).
We live northeast of them, right on their purple contour line under the 'n' in Shamokin. During clear days we often can make out that faint purple arc overhead.
And WCHS from WV one late SSS. They're 5000 omni, too. Once in Norfolk VA when I was maybe 13 I heard them around SSS.

{ I once was consigned to log the Oldies playlist of WARM Scranton for a few hours. One might've figured that at 5000 watts, 50 miles the OTHER way, NE, they'd come in decently.
Nope. Ol' One-and 1/8 Ear lives co-linear between WARM and WHP and very much in WARM's 24-hour directional null. My attentive, long TSL was unnecessary anyway, as the fellow told me later that the first three songs he read told him the rest of the list. The session was a good DX workout, though. Like the old days. Music on the AM dial }

From west Houston TX

Days, nothing. Sometimes in the winter, somewhere w/low noise level, I can get a hint of XELRDA and/or KJMJ
Sunset, night, sunrise KJMJ Alexandria LA w/Radio Maria Catholic programming, mixing w/XELRDA Piedras Negras ("La Rancherita del Aire") and WIBW Topeka KS (news/talk and farm). Another talk station is sometimes in there, possibly WDBO Orlando or WGAC Augusta GA, but haven't gotten a clear ID

Kenosha, WI Days- WILL Urbana, IL has a decent signal @ 172 miles away; it's listenable in the car in quiet areas. A null will show WTCM Traverse City, MI bubbling underneath; critical hours will sometimes bring it up to listenable level.

Nights- Most common is WIBW Topeka, KS. Have sporadically heard WKTY La Crosse, WI and CKWW Windsor, ON. Occasionally I can actually pick out WILL on their 100 watt night power.

Usually a pretty quiet channel here at night.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WILL Urbana, IL
Nighttime: open frequency WIBW, WELO, WKTY, WTCM common visitors. WILL can also be heard when conditions are auroral

DX/RETRO: others heard throughout the years include KJMJ (Alexandria, LA), WCHS (Chrleston, WV), WHP (Harrisburg, PA), bunch of Canadians that are no longer on the air (CKAP, CKPR, CKY, CHLC). My most recent new log on 580 is WXRH (Rockwood, TN), which was heard on several occasions in the last 2 years. Foreign stations include XEFI (Chihuahua) which used to be quite common log back in 1980/90's, as well as XEMU (Piedras Negras). Radio Rebelde back in 1986, but not hearing any Cubans on the frequency these days. For a long time I have been trying to log WKAQ Puerto Rico, which I finally did hear in 2020. Also, Spain (RNE1) heard on the split frequency 585 kHz in 2005.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: It's XELRDA in Piedras Negras with a good signal.

Sunset: XELRDA is still strong. I can null it almost completely by aiming N-NW and hear a weak WIBW in Topeka.

Night: It's still XELRDA dominating for the most part. WIBW mixes in more strongly, especially in the now partial null, and sometimes it will take over. Aiming NE/SW I'll occasionally hear a weak XEAV in Tlaquepaque underneath playing English-language classic hits.

Sunrise: Similar to nighttime. On occasion, XEAV will come up stronger when it goes to day power. Aiming NW, I usually hear a weak KUBC "The Canyon" in Montrose, CO, with classic rock for a bit after it goes to day power.

DX/Retro: I heard XEFI in Chihuahua once before it was retired. A few times in past years I've heard KJMJ "Radio Maria" in Alexandria, LA, and news/talk KRFE in Lubbock, TX, at night.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Slop from adjacent local 570-KLIF.
Nights: A very strong news/talk WIBW Topeka. In the null is KJMJ Alexandria, LA and/or XELRDA Piedras Negras, Coah.
Minus the Mexican, same report from Tyler. Probably a little easier to null WIBW for KJMJ night reception here, but otherwise an identical report from the Rose Capital of the World.

CKY 580 Winnipeg, Manitoba
I heard the station several times I wouldn’t call it a “flamethrower” here in the Chicago area…FT status belongs to CBW 990 here!
Well, it's been gone for some 20 years, so all that's left there is CBW. But CKY's daytime coverage was even better in many areas.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days: I get nothing during the day.

Nights: It's usually WTAG Worcester, MA. I have received CFRA Ottawa, ON and WHP Harrisburg, PA in the past. On 01/23/2023, I received WKAQ San Juan, PR which is over 1,620 miles away from me.
