AM HD TURNOFF PACE ACCELERATES

Like the well-worn joke about the mugger who held up Bill Tanner in the parking lot at an NAB convention. "The mugger got away with $500 cash. And $2000 in trade...." (Fire RIMSHOT on rattling grey Fidelipac)

It absolutely made my day when, on that massively tense occasion when I took my Tennessee bar exam, I encountered an essay question about Pepper-Tanner and some lawsuit they were involved in.

See, some things were just meant to be. This is OT, but on my bar exam, there was a con-law question about liquor store advertising. Well, it was based on a local case that had been in the papers. I tried to impress the examiner by using the real names of the parties. Did it work? I passed. Didn't care.

Helpful Hint and Free Tax Tip to HD operators:

Just because you're still depreciating that iBiquity Decepticon, that doesn't mean it has to remain in hissmaker service. You can find other productive ongoing uses for it without ongoing spectrum pollution: keeping that Tx site door from slamming shut on windy days. Use it for a handy stepstool when hanging a remote banner. Paint a target on it, place on convenient stump out at the site, and...."PULL!!" :D

Know that old pickup truck you use to drive out to the towers and plow the parking lot - the one with the rusted parking-brake cable? Three words: "handy wheel chock".... ;)

Remembering Sparta's "legendary reputation" for [fill-in-the-blank], consider all the joyful additional hours of radio listening—free of HD-induced "hisssssssss", had that company produced and widely marketed a dime store version of the infamous Harris "DeathStar". 'And when that Sparta product DID WORK as expected, just think of the fond memories of the hiss produced by another of its legendary broadcast audio products...

As we near 30,000 page views and 700 posts in this marathon thread:

McLarnon reports: the AM-HD count is down one more, to 225 (only 75 on at night, half of which are graveyarders.) 11 new reports of turn-offs in the past six months alone by my count.

Now THERE'S today's excuse for an early Happy Hour! Cheers - literally and figuratively! :D

The Big 620 was still listed as on with HD as of today. Barry, you on the channel??

So with the number of FM stations broadcasting in HD stalled at 16% and less than 5% of AM stations doing so (assuming 4782 total AM stations), can we now say that anti-HD Radio sentiment has, for practical reasons, gripped most of the radio broadcasting industry and that it has moved beyond just a fringe group?

Barry's total remains down to 224, and that does NOT include WTMJ 620, which we had previously claimed as a turnoff but which came back on.

I wonder what will happen with all these cars offering HD Radio soon. Ive read about Kia and Toyota adding them for 2012. We all know how reliable FM HD Radio is when it encounters multipath from downtown buildings or weak signals outside of town. And how could we forget the stability of AM HD Radio in a thunderstorm.

Hell, in today's economy who can afford anything that's not bringing in money, much less streams that literally no one is listening to?
