AM HD TURNOFF PACE ACCELERATES

Must be something in the water in Rochester. I note WHTK 1280's hissifier is back on (daytimes only, natch.) The seven people who own HD-AM capable radios locally must be gratified (as long as they drive down to Winton Road in Brighton or Route 104 in Parma to get within digital-decode range, that is.) Literally the only thing you can hear from 990 south of the New York Thruway is the IBOC sidebands.

Whoops! Make that 224 (see separate topic, this board - "WTMJ Hissing No Longer") !!!
The Big 620 was still listed as on with HD as of today. Barry, you on the channel??

GREAT trends, gentlemen - let's keep it up!

Sad to say, but WTMJ has cranked up the hiss-fest anew. On the same day as CBS got WSCR's jammer cranked up again. Who is listening to AM in HD anyway? Anyone?

Why do this?

Be of good cheer - by my count, it's only back up to 225, since WLGZ and WTMJ were never reported as "off" on Barry's site, anyway...

Is it possible to deliver the RDS capability without the HD? Or are they interrelated?

Maybe the whole system isn't dead, just parts of it.

RDS (RBDS in the US) is a completely separate system that doesn't need HD to run. RDS is usually implemented with the HD upgrade and each provides different text capabilities. RDS actually does a whole lot more on its own, but that's neither here nor there since most radios only support a few features like station name and R-Text or format.

I don't care if most radios can't decode it, people change radios. If RBDS can work independently - on AM as well as FM - why not use that and trash the rest until they have an HD system that will
work?

I don't think there are really many people beyond a few out of touch ibiquity executives who consider converting an analog radio station into an IBOC hiss fest as an "upgrade". It's ibiquity-speak for "we got another sucker hooked".

Yayy!! Happy hour comes early as KTCN (ex-KFAN 1130) Minneapolis tosses in the IBOC Terrible Towel, as reported on Barry McLarnon's site!

Now it's....223. Still aiming for 200 by the end of the year....hope springs eternal..... :)

I still contend it is a higher maintenance project. In a cost cutting world, the rate of return does not qualify for the electric and labor bill.

A bad technology sold under the bill of goods called "digital".

Now if they would get rid of the 5 kHz brickwall filter they might have a decent sounding signal again...

Most AM radios are so bad, an average listener can't tell the brickwall exists.

KTCN (formerly KFAN, formerly WDGY) 1130 has their noise generator back on as of Monday...

I hesitate to mention this but WHJJ is again off but it's been off in the past only to disappoint & come back on.

Reviving the thread after a quiet fall for AM-HD turnoffs: looks like I'm not gonna get my Christmas wish that the count would drop below 200 stations by year's end. BUT!

KSL Salt Lake reported off December 2011, and not just for BYU games. That's (tympani roll)....223. The 2009 high-water mark (actually, sorta ankle-high water mark) was 290.

And to all a Good Night. :-\

I must say that they do sound a lot better than those 3KHz restricted TIR stations popping up in every town, village, and hamlet. The TIR's I hear sound much worse than even an iDEN handset.
