WENK-AM 1240, Union City, TN, and WTPR AM 710, Paris, TN, simulcast oldies/classic hits (WTPR-FM simulcast on 101.7)
WSM-AM 650, Nashville, country (specifically classic country)
WAMB-AM, Nashville, standards (simulcast on translator at 99.3)
WMRO-AM 1560, Gallatin, TN, hot AC (pays the bills with religious services all day on Sunday)
Firepoint,
I had thought about 1240 in Unoin City and 710 in Paris, but couldn't think of the call letters and didn't have the chance to look them up yet. Thanks.
I also need to make a correction in my earlier post: 1450 in Dyersburg is WTRO. WDSG was the old call letters, and I don't know why I posted that. ::)
Amazing that even I didn't catch that one! They, too, now have an FM translator, don't they? I recall listening to them on one when I was last in Dyersburg a couple of years ago.
Yes, WTRO has a translator on 101.7, although I wish it was on a different frequency. I listen to them at times and it has a spotty signal in Alamo, where I live, but it fights with a K-LOVE translator on the same frequency in Brownsville. I'd rather be able to hear WTRO in this case, but the K-LOVE translator was there first, and WTRO requested to move there anyway, which I think was a dumb move.
Is it possible that WTRO is trying to cover ONLY Dyer County with that frequency? If so, then you may be SOL. (Somewhat ironic, since SL-100 (at least back when I lived in the weststate) used to boast of reaching 32 counties in four states!) But if this is the case, then it may still leave an opening for WCTA to do something (other than re-broadcast NOAA) in Crockett County.

This is good I didn't know of many of these stations and some are different formats than I though they were. I'll be doing extensive travelling over the next couple of months.

I just left Evansville after a couple days there. Evansville and Owenboro are some of the best markets for AM music stations by the shear number of stations. WBNL is an interesting little station with its very unusual mix of country, easy listening and light rock music and local owners. I really like it.

I also enjoy 860 and 1590 in Mt. Vernon. Pittsburgh is also a good market for AM music. WARM 590 in W-B/Scranton is a strong station, it has always been Shannons true oldies channels when I listened, I like the TOC tho, I like his mix of music over the burned out classic hits format by Clueuless that is Mojo.

I am looking forward to my trips to the northeast and south to check the stations out.

WDIA is always a must listen for me in Memphis, a lot of music there that I don't here on any other station. I still miss WMC, now just another boring sports talker there was such a glut for sports talk in Memphis. Yes that was sarcasm ;) how many sports stations does Memphis have now? I know that sports is more attractive than old country to advertisers, how thin can you spread those dollars among so many stations before it just is not able to make any money. I am biased as well, I like sports yet hate sports talk outside of a game so my view is slanted in all fairness.

KOY is and interesting station too, when I was there last for a family visit the oldies/nostalgia format by day and Smooth Jazz at night is nice setup. That was started when 95.5 dropped the format. Since AM radio at night is not a big revenue source I wonder why some other talk stations that have virtually have no listeners at night don't give oldies or smoth jazz a chance at night while keeping to their normal day schedule.

When you ain't got nothing you got nothing left to lose as Janis said ;-)

Thanks for all the input.

I guess you're right. My mother lives in the area near WTRO's tower and it's probably 25 miles away and I know that's pushing the limit.

Minneapolis/St. Paul:

740 -- Daytime only; Oldies (local morning show; True-Oldies Channel rest of the day)
770 -- Daytime only; Alternative/College
800 -- (actually St. Cloud but strong in NW metro); classic country
920 -- (far South metro); country/polka
1030 -- Religious
1080 -- (far South metro); variety
1360 -- (far West metro); oldies/country during the day
1440 -- Radio Disney

Plus 630, 1400/1470, 1530 -- Spanish; and 690 and 1600, Hmong

I stand corrected on WMC 790 in Memphis. I knew thay had gone back to sports but for some reason country was stuck in my mind. Sorry about that. ::)

West Central Michigan:

WION-AM Stereo (4700w/330w) on the web in AM stereo at www.i1430.com (locally programmed) full-service/AC
WGLM-AM Greenville Full-service/Classic Country (not streamed yet)

The first station that I ever worked for was the mighty 1440 WHDM in McKenzie, TN, pumping out a whopping 500 watts. They were a country station at the time that I worked there (early 1990s), but are now a primarily-satellite-fed oldies/classic hits station. (They, too, now have an FM translator at 98.9.)

Back when I worked there, my mother used to be able to listen to me whenever she drove down to Dyersburg to visit her sister. At the time, WDSG had just vacated the 1450 frequency, and WTRO was still a year or two away from taking it over. I remember telling mom that if WTRO/WDSG had been on the air while I was working at WHDM, she likely would not have been able to listen to me from Dyer County! Even as it was, she was only able to pick up the station in the rural areas, away from all the electrical wires, etc., of the city.

The WDSG call letters now belong to an LPFM station in North Carolina:

http://www.radio-locator.com/info/WDSG-FL

http://www.wdsg-fm.com

I really wish that those calls could have stayed in Dyersburg, because they had a "mini-heritage" there. WDSG stood for "(west?) Dyersburg State Gazette," but could have also been shorthand for DyerSburG itself. But I also understand that the WDSG calls became "damaged goods" there because of station (mis)management the last few years that they were on the air.

640 WMFN Zeeland, MI (Spanish)
750 WARD Petoskey, MI (country) - simulcast of 100kW sister FM station
810 WMJH Rockford, MI (oldies)
850 WGVS Muskegon, MI (oldies)
910 WDOR Sturgeon Bay, WI (AC/full service) - simulcast of 77kW sister FM station
910 WFDF Farmington Hills, MI (Radio Disney)
980 WAKV Otsego, MI (oldies)
980 WCUB Two Rivers, WI (country)
1240 WOMT Manitowoc, WI (adult contemporary)
1410 WNWZ Grand Rapids, MI (urban AC)
1450 WKLA Ludington, MI (True Oldies Channel) - one of the worst AM signals I can think of
1480 WGVU Kentwood, MI (oldies)
1520 WMLM St. Louis, MI (country)
1530 WYGR Wyoming, MI (urban) - also a very bad signal, but they do have an FM translator that gets out 20 miles or so
1590 WGBW Denmark, WI (True Oldies Channel)

In the Duluth, MN/Superior, WI market:

970 WGEE (An odd mix of Music Of Your Life and NASCAR Radio, live racing, call-in shows etc.)

Distant but receivable from Cloquet, MN:

1230 WKLK ("America's Best Music" automation, AP news; local news, auction/swap shows, rummage sale ad round-up (!), funeral notices, Sunday religious programming, polka party.)

580 CKWW 60's/70's oldies, "From the studios of the legendary Big 8"
630 CFCO Country - in AM stereo (has an FM translator on 92.9 for Chatham itself)
680 WNZK brokered ethnic nighttimer often, not always, music
690 WNZK brokered ethnic daytimer often, not always, music
910 WFDF Mouse
1450 WLEC Dial Global Lounge, with a lot of local sports PBP thrown in.

Note about CKWW: For years, they had talk targeting the Windsor market on 580 and adult standards on CKLW 800. Somebody had the bright (not) idea of flipping the pair to each other. CKWW takes a lot of interference from the IBOC of WRDT 560. I sure wish the oldies could be "From the legendary transmitter of the Big 8!"

I'm near Cassville, Missouri in the SW part of the state.

On a good AM radio, I get 3 music stations in the daytime -

860 KKOW Classic Country - Pittsburg, KS.
1100 KKLL Southern Gospel with other Christian Programming - Webb City, MO
1140 KLTK Regional Mexican - Centerton, AR

On a really good AM radio, there's them 3 as well as -

1060 KBFL Nostalgia - Springfield, MO - I almost didn't include them in this category (weak)
1420 KBTN Classic Country - Neosho, MO
1480 KTHS Classic Hits - Berryville, AR - not much of a station. I wish they'd go Classic Rock
1490 KDMO Nostalgia - Carthage, MO
1510 KMRF Same as KKLL - Marshfield, MO - KKLL & KMRF owned by Here's Help Radio Ntwk
1590 KYNG Spanish - Springdale, AR "Estereo Rumba"

With a really really good AM radio, I'd add (way beyond the fringe here)-

540 KWMT -Classic Country - Fort Dodge, IA (BARELY Identifiable in best conditions)
1070 KLIO Oldies -Wichita, KS

all the above are daytime. I get 650 WSM Country from Nashville, TN at night, usually.

They run 1 kW daytime from studios and tower pretty close to the intersection of Interstate 95 and US 58. Though I can't find any nighttime authorization listed at the FCC site or radio-locator, I've been through Emporia a few times at night and WEVA's been on air.

Music on AM has been gone from the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005. The lone hold-out had been KABL 960, which had played standards and big band music since the mid 90s. It was once a top rated "Beautiful Music" station that simulcast on FM.

What about the KFRC revival on 1550, Llew? Wasn't that after 2005? Till like 2011 or something?

OK - got me there, Michael...again. I guess I was forgetting because nobody cared and nobody listened. Kind of the radio equivalent of the old conundrum- "if a tree falls in the woods and there's nobody there to hear it, does it make a sound?"

CBS actually got better ratings with the format that followed - running podcasts.
