AM Only/Dial Global

I heard "The Poor People of Paris" by Les Baxter. Now that's one I haven't heard on Pointless Classics since July. That was followed (I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later) by "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco.

Jeff Rollins feels sorry for those poor people. This may be good news, because he wants to run for President. He has no platform, no party, and I may have heard him say no money.

According to yes.com music logs of DialGlobal stations WOSN (Melbourne, FL) and WGL-AM/WWGL-FM (Fort Wayne), "Secret Love" and "Whatever Will Be, Will Be" by Doris Day are back in rotation, as is "Moonglow and Theme from 'Picnic'" by Morris Stoloff. So it seems that some of the older stuff that was dropped from the format is starting to return. Musically it is far superior to Timeless Classics.

As one who loves the format, I still shake my head in disbelief to read and hear that of all the truly great, memorable, hit songs still not played in this format ... Doris Day and Morris Stoloff (both nice songs, but way very very safe and overplayed) make rotations (again) over hundreds of others not played in years. I want to hear more "WOW!" factor songs not played, not continuous retreads of, literally, "Whatever Will Be, Will Be..." I bet we could name dozens each right here on this board. Maybe someone's watching. Any requests, anyone? I'll start with more Sergio Mendes, more Peggy Lee, deeper Sinatra, nostalgic Como, better Andy Williams, and the hip "new" Tony Bennett "Duets." Let's build our own syndicated format right here... I just bet we could do it in about a week or less.

Sorry, need to add Streisand, Denver, Diamond, Fifth Dimension, Petula Clark, too, with Lettermen, Vogues. Vinton and Kaempfert, Jones (Jack and Tom,) Engelbert, C. Francis, "Big Band" Rondstadt, Steve & Eydie, Riddle and Mancini and a few Basie, Nancy Wilson, Ella, P. Page, too. Crossovers, carefully chosen: Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers. There's the first hundred songs, or more, alone. This could sound real nice. Now, just 1400 to go...

Wonderful. I haven't heard any of these yet, but I have long suspected if certain songs are there already, why not these.

Great version of a classic song ... It makes my list for sure.

Frankly, I thought Chick retired when he left WGAR in Cleveland...long, long ago.

I listen to a station airing this format about 10 hrs a day at work/in car as background music and it seems they have certain songs which are put in the playlist for a while and then rotated out...heard, for example "Midnight at the Oasis" and "Moonlight Feels Right" several times over the past few weeks but had not heard them played much before. Also heard a piece by Spyro Gyra the other night.

The local station airing this format (FM) images this station as light AC "Your feel good station, listen at work station" etc. which I really appreciate as opposed to branding it as a senior citizens station which so many of the old standards stations seemed to do.

Some stations were treating it like soft AC years ago. WYLT Raleigh, N. C., was listed in one source as soft AC in 1995, but this was when they were AM Only, the format now called Dial Global.

They really were almost soft AC in 2001.

Dial Global is the program syndicator not the format name. The format name is Adult Standards.

VChimp - I remember that. WAAM in Ann Arbor used to air Adult Standards on weekends before they transitioned to full-time news/talk. I can recall hearing titles such as "Dreamin'" and "The Sweetest Days" by Vanessa Williams and "The Captain of Her Heart" by Double, as well as "These Dreams" by Heart, "Words Get In The Way" by Gloria Estefan, and even "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. Although Adult Standards has some ABBA songs in rotation now, "Dancing Queen" is not one of them.

[/quote]Well, Dial Global Adult Standards is what I meant. It takes too many words to say all that.

And since we can't edit here after a certain amount of time, this will have to do. :)

I'm glad to hear that. That song isn't right for the format, though I like ABBA.

Regarding the other songs, I did hear "These Dreams" and I told the people in charge that those were nightmares, and that moonlight most definitely does not feel right (a reference to Starbuck). And "That'll Be The Day" if I ever listen again after hearing Buddy Holly. Some of his material, though, fits a standards format.

I haven't been called VChimp here yet by anyone else. That was my nickname on Thewb.com.
Gloria Estefan doesn't surprise me. "Coming Out of the Dark" is the one slow song I never heard on Stardust.

500 posts for me. I never expected it.

I heard "Southern Nights" on this format while at the very same time Pointless Classics was playing "Gentle On My Mind". Do they plan these things? :D

And "My Heart Belongs" by Bobby Vinton preceded "You Belong To Me" by Carly Simon. Jeff Rollins said the latter sounded more threatening. Meanwhile, that song was on Useless Classics an hour later.

Jeff Rollins' mother said he was not going to have hair like those Beatles! Of course, that's a conservative style compared to today.

Rod Stewart was on twice in one hour. Once with Cher. I thought only Sinatra was worthy.

He wore his green robe and watched basketball, and by Monday he seemed better.

This is amazing. One day I heard "Unforgettable", the original by Nat. Followed by "When I Fall In Love", the hideous Celine Dion duet. So I turn to Worthless Classics and there's Nat singing "Mona Lisa".

I hate when this happens. A great Sinatra performance (including the musicians). Followed by the dreck that is Celine Dion's duet "Beauty and the Beast" (electronic mess in the background rather than real instruments). But "Moon River" was the last thing I heard this morning.
