AM Only/Dial Global

Is there a Dial Global station that streams? Like MOYL streams?

Seaview 960 AM Palm Beach Gardens, Fl

KKJL 1400 AM San Luis Obispo, Ca

KIIX 1410 AM Loveland, Co

KHUI 99.5 FM Honolulu, HI

All stream Dial Global

I was watching a history of Grand Central Station the other night on PBS. There were two. The event that led to the second one ... well, it sounded very much like what happened Friday. "Baby Come Back" by Player followed by two songs that even Chuck would call standards, followed by more pop from the 70s.

Certain things could be improved. It's not enough just to play the standards a lot.

Although just in the area of how many "real" standards they play, they just keep getting better. And the AC wasn't as AC today.

Casey Hayes was filling in today. I missed him over the weekend due to basketball. ::)

Basketball season is over! ;D

Well, there is tonight, but I don't listen at night.

I have to say Casey's show didn't sound as good as it could have. There was "Because of You" by Tony Bennett, but there was "Two Hearts" by Phil Collins. ??? This is not Worthless Classics. And "Just a Song Before I Go" by Crosby, Stills and at least Nash. Friday, I heard "Lowdown" by Boz Skaggs. Which was followed by an optional commercial break (the affiliate plays music then on Tuesday and Thursday but airs job listings Monday, Wednesday and Friday) followed by "Lotta Love" by Nicollette Larson. Huh???

Now I do like the flute on "Lowdown" but not the vocals or the screaming guitar.

Today it was back to normal. The last song I heard was "Friendly Persuasion" by Pat Boone. I also heard a song by Sinatra that wasn't familiar to me, the "Unforgettable" Nat and Natalie duet and a couple of other "real" standards. In a little over an hour.

I'd like to comment on how much better Dial Global is, but I'd rather everyone did that here.

While standards and MOR hits are still very much a part of their repertoire, I think they've crossed the line from adult contemporary into light rock territory. I wonder if they're progressing toward a "Sunny" format. (Can "I Will Survive" be far away?)

As we've discussed on here before, we'll just have to put up with the updated playlist, but my main criticism lately is the repetition. They must think people don't listen for extended periods. When you play songs like "Kokomo" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" every day, they're eventually going to stand out among the Frank, Nat, and Perry songs, and listeners will start to notice.

I actually heard some music today that I have not heard in a long time -- and maybe never before on the DG Adult Standards playlist -- "New World in the Morning" by Roger Whitaker (though it was an inferior remake of the 1970s original) and a couple of less familiar tunes by Perry Como.

Good stuff.

I'm hearing songs I haven't heard in a long time. Songs I haven't heard ever before Dial Global.

Those who think the format is moving in an AC direction haven't been listening very long. Trust me, they've been moving more standards in the last two years. there are times when it's like Music of Your Life. True, I'm usually not listening for very long when that happens.

It was in 2001 they went more AC, sounding pretty much like Timeless Favorites does now.

(By the way, that format is here:

So we can keep all the comments about that format in one place.)

Trouble is, Dial Global hasn't gotten rid of a lot of the junk they added then. I really can't understand "Foolish Heart" by Steve Perry.

I also heard "Two Hearts" by Phil Collins, but that was surely added back in the day. I just never heard it. Also "You'll Be in My Heart." What??? I come here to get AWAY from that stuff.

This one needs a bump so people won't post about this format on other threads.

I thought Bill Jones was still filling in for Jeff Rollins one day last week. The original "Me and Mrs. Jones" was played, and the DJ said, "Me and Mrs. Jones, WE got a thing goin' on." Actually, it was Casey Hayes. Now that makes me wonder ...

Reading about the "surviving" formats of the Dial Global acquisition of Jones that were announced this week, I saw no mention of the DG Adult Standards format. (I know the Jones Adult Standards is going away.) Now I realize the DG format isn't always the favorite on this board, but I actually like it better than MOYL and than Timeless Favorites (though I do like all three for different reasons). Can anybody confirm the status of the Dial Global Adult Standards format after January 1?

I don't know, but I saw something on another board that suggested this format wouldn't be around.

I'm hoping the person saw the Jones format was going away and got confused.

This is certainly better than Timeless Classics, but Music of Your Life IS better musically.

I also saw the list of formats that DG would be keeping, and I did not see the standards format included. I do not have
a DG or MOYL station here in Chicago. We do have a few suburban sticks that run Timeless(which I do like), but it is
definitely not a standards format.

So if DG does away with the standards format what is left just MOYL? If this is the case does anyone see Timeless possibly
making some changes and going back to what they were a few years back? I thought the music mix they had about 2001
or 2002 when they were Stardust was excellent.

Our Jones Standards affiliate (WQBB 1040 AM in Knoxville) actually started using Dial Global today (Tuesday the 30th) which caught me by surprise because I thought we would have one more day of Jones. But I will say that Dial Global's format is very good. Although it is quite a bit more contemporary than Jones and MOYL, the music mix reminds me of one of my favorite stations, WDUV in Tampa. I certainly hope that Dial Global doesn't kill the format on January 1st.

Anyway, I will say that Jones did a very good job with standards for a format that they only had for 9 months and I will miss not having it around (much like I have missed MOYL around here too.)

My understanding is that the "original" adult standards format by Dial Global (now called, "America's Best Music") will be around after January 1st.

The changes, however, involve the elimination of the Jones Standards format Sept. 30 and on Jan. 1, the elimination of "The Lounge" from the Waitt Radio Network, which Triton Media also purchased along with Jones some months ago.

Though "The Lounge" offered a sat based (with Internet backup) feed that included a local hard disk of music for what few stations it had (three, if not mistaken,) the sat feed from Waitt was for distribution of semi-live and "topical" voice tracks that were automagically downloaded for client stations and those tracks were put into the station's master playback computer and "linked" to create a cohesive, more topical and more "localized" sound for each station in up to five times an hour.

The problem, the system didn't work very well and was a trainwreck.

My feeling is that D-G will continue with what's established on it's 130 stations in the format, though I wouldn't be surprised to see some announcer changes, especially with the Southcott's on the loose from Jones.

Stay tuned.

Update: The Dial Global bio of Chick Watkins lists him still as program director for the format. But Carl Hampton is definitely the midday guy. Anyone know how long Chick was in this slot?

Back to '88 and the AM Only days.
