AM OR NOT AM

It may be worse than we thought.

I was at my production house studios here in Vegas friday. I was talking with the crew about AM radio in this market and the 20 something female office manager said. "I didn't know there still was AM radio".

There's your clue.

Probably listens to an iPod or at the minimum, Wild 94.9 or KMVQ. Probably hasn't listened to KGO-AM for years...

That's your new generation right there! People that either don't know, or don't remember AM radio....

We've got two generations of Americans, dating back to the early 70's, who grew up on FM music stations. They never knew AM existed (or thought of it as where their dad listened to a baseball game). So when they get into the age where spoken word formats become interesting, they find AM sounds "strange" and in general are not impressed.

They don't "remember" AM because they never personally picked an AM as a station to listen to. And that is why, in 12-24, the number of people listening to AM an hour or more a week is essentially zero.

If only these people knew about "The Big 610." (Sigh)

Yep! If KGO and KCBS had the best hit music, full of Justin Bieber, Usher and uncensored Eminem, it might catch some 12+ listeners. But most people below 30 aren't into AM at all, and they mostly listen to FM (not including phones and iPods).

According to the 12+ ratings in Las Vegas, the highest rated AM station gets a 1 share. Chances are pretty good that almost no one listens to AM radio in Las Vegas.

My daughter is 8, goes to a school 2 miles away....one of her friends at school, who lives 2 blocks away, discovered my
music AOR (all over the road) AM 1620 music station and loves it...all on his own. No promotion...he just found it all on his own.
AM can sound better than FM, and does when someone cares enough.

There are many exceptions to to rules.

I have an 18 year old car. It has an AM/FM tuner and a cassette(!) player. The AM has 6 presets, the FM has 12. Even 18 years ago the radio makers knew that people weren't listening to AM radio.

Was it Merlin's prime target for FM News? I can see why all-news stations and News talk stations in some parts of the country move to FM.

Ten years ago, I hired a young intern at an AM/FM combo. She had never heard AM, or even heard OF it. I repeat, this was a decade ago!

It is not amazing to me what young people don't know. All the new technology doesn't seem to help.

So?
I've never heard of lots of the things you all talk about here.
I have a home schooled nephew who is 11 years old. Super super smart. Just like his brother and sister who are going to great colleges now. He's never heard of Bugs Bunny. One day I asked him "What's up doc?" He looked at me like I'm from Mars.

So, he thought you were Marvin The Martian? ;D

Oh, I think I know who you mean. Bugs did meet a Martian at least once. Is that who you mean? I don't know the Martian's name. The Martian had a ray gun and was always threatening to disintegrate Bugs
