AM signals booming from the south tonight

Why don't you try some of the regional channels? From your spot, you should get stations from CA, NV and AZ during Aurora.

1470-KIID Sacramento is a new log, number 460 to be exact. Very poor with match to local Radio Disney in Seattle (1250).

Around 12AM this morning, was doing an AM bandscan in Central VA. Lots of Spanish here wiping out the big ones like WOR, WABC, WCBS, and even WSM. I could null them and pick up some of the US stations, but not very clearly. Earlier in the evening at around 8PM it was only on the lower end of the band, but by midnight, it was all across the dial. Southern stations definitely are ruling the band. WWL sounds like a local along with WSB.

I switched over to FM and listened a while too. Picked up my usual 103.3 WESR from the Eastern Shore (200 miles) and several VA Beach stations too, but then also heard Raleigh's 100.7 WRVA-FM. Several other faint stations were heard when I'd null the locals, but I didn't I.D. them as they were fading in and out.

This morning at 2:40AM CDT, I was hearing classical music on my car radio (2005 Chrysler 300 stock radio) on 530KHZ. I was on my way to work. I listened for about 9 minutes.

How can I tell if anything happens down here in Vallejo?

I don't really know, as I've never DXed from California (I live in the PNW), but my guess would be you would find signals from the north reduced in strength. For example, if you normally hear Canada on some frequencies, you probably wouldn't when an aurora kicks in.

Classical would be easy-listening station Radio Enciclopedia from Cuba. It's usually heard on 530 khz on the East Coast.

Could that have been Radio Sinfonola, out of Costa Rica?

Since "sinfonola" means "juke box" I doubt that the programming is that high-brow.

Well, there's the Napoleon House on Chartres Street in New Orleans. Bar/Cafe with an all-classical music jukebox. It's been a few years....but every time I've been in there, there's been no shortage of people playing it!
