WPAX is 1000 watts, the maximum power for that frequency.
Graveyard. Would they even be allowed to drop power below 1000 watts on that frequency or is it only X-Band 1610-1700 that have minimum power requirements?
^ Minimum? KVNS 1700 runs slightly less than 10k day/1k night, which is what almost all the X-banders run....

Is there such a requirement?

BTW I think the 1660 in NJ runs 9.8k night, but out into the Atlantic. If it covers as much real estate as the ND 1k would, seems like a waste of electricity.
I didn't mean to say minimum, I meant to say there are firm power requirements of 10kw NDd/1kw NDn) for all X-banders.
Yeah, there are a couple X-band exceptions, one around NYC and a couple along the Mexican border I believe. I'm pretty sure there are less than 5 exceptions in the lower 48. The whole basis of the x-band was that all stations would be 10k days, 1k nights and all stations would broadcast in stereo. I think the stereo requirement is still on the FCC books and the NYC and Mexican border stations obviously got some type of waiver for power due to their local circumstances... but all the stations in "regular America" run 10k days and 1k nights non-directional. I know of none that comply with the stereo requirement. I would be interested to know if an expert is aware of the stereo requirement being dropped or of any x-band running stereo (especially if it's a talk based format!). Was it 1700 or 1710 that only had one allotment in the USA, Atlanta, Texas (or somewhere else in north Texas) I believe. Strange that I never picked it up, I think it's been dark for over a decade and likely had the license revoked or turned it.

It was KALT *1610* in Atlanta, TX. I am sure I caught it during its short life, but I don't keep loggings.

I do not know if that AM Stereo requirement is really enforced. I'd be very surprised if it was. I have a local in the X-band, WJCC....I am sure they are not stereo.

There used to be a rah-rah site for AM Stereo, and I am sure it was www.amstereoradio.com ....but it seems as if they threw in the towel.....

I am not aware of any prohibition of C-Quam....I could be wrong....that was not the reason I took it off....there was a problem with the audio processing and it was going to be very expensive to repair.....by the way we had ZERO calls about the removal of C-Quam.

I first heard about it on the AM Stereo email lists & it seems Randy Michaels was a big proponent of Kahn's system so went it wasn't approved, any A.M.$ station had its stereo yanked with the exceptions of then-KABL & the 920 in Columbus, I believe. I had the ban confirmed by an engineer @ CC Providence.

I know if something I like goes away, I don't complain. I just go elsewhere. I doubt many of the sports F.M. stations that switch to mono get complaints either.

I just checked 1290 WPCF--on my Jeep (2000) w/CQUAM RX--No indication the station is in stereo. Audio is very distorted and over-processed.

I do not know if Panama City ever had an AM Stereo but 590 AM was WDLP
in the 70's, in the 90's it was MOR easy listening and called "The Breeze"
Does anybody remember when "WGNE-1480KHZ I believe was the top dog
on Panama City Beach in the 60's/70's, Joe Moore of Channel 7 fame was
the voice of Genie, if you went to Port St Joe, it was Big Joe WJOE playing
country, going west to OK county, Top 40 WNUE, 1400, Ft Walton Beach, WFTW,1260 MOR, Top 40 WBSR 1450, Pensacola, and WABB AM in Mobile,
the only stations to listen to then before FM..from out of New Orleans it was 690AM WTIX and 1070, WNOE.

The station that was originally WPCF became WWWQ in the early '80s and broadcast in AM stereo starting around 1984. They shared a building with WPFM then. Later they moved into the old WDLP studios and changed their calls again. I don't know if they are still broadcasting in AM stereo.
