Amarillo changes

It looks like long-time country KMML 96.9 is now top 40 ... the website www.969kmml.com now redirects to a new page showing it to be "96.9 Kiss FM." It looks like KATP 101.9's new logo shows it going from "101-9 the Kat" to "Kat Country 102." Did it become more current based with KMML gone?

The new management came from Cumulus and the OM has no Next Gen experience.
They are pretty much programming the stations as you would have 15-20 years ago.. singing jingles, pitched music... they even brough Big D and Bubba back. Absolutely no music directon or promotions to get some attention. Only the names change there. Everything else stays the same.

Whether for the better or worse, I do believe that each cluster's manager has the ability to run it how he wants. Any changes good or bad would be due directly to choices made by the GM. I believe in Lubbock and Mid-Odessa that
Gap is making some progress that was not possible with CC. Jury is still out though. Amarillo seems to be distancing themselves from the rest of the group.

Interesting, I wonder what else GAP has in store...

It looks like their KKTX 96.1 "96X" Tyler/Longview has added more currents lately.

It looks like their KMJI 93.3 Texarkana has re-imaged as "Mix 93.3" from "Magic 93.3" recently.

Seems like there has been a few changes around the state in some of the smaller markets no one has mentioned...Cumulus' KTLT 98.1 Abilene ditching contemporary Christian for modern rock "98X" several months ago; BMP changing KQUR 94.9 Laredo from rhythmic oldies to hot AC "94.9 the Works" recently. It looks like Cumulus has also added some currents to classic rock KLTD 101.7 in Temple/Killeen.

Yeah, bring back a morning show that did horrible while it was in Lubbock. Thats real smart. My personal opinion is that RADIO in Amarillo is bad all around. Its kinda like a dead zone. Where's Christopher Walken? It was a huge mistake for GAP to bring in the CUMULUS guys to take things over. As for Lubbock and other markets.... I think things are going to be a lot better for everyone who works for GAP. From what I have been told and heard...they are going to be given money to actually use for promotions etc... So, we will see.

As a programmer, what the hell does it matter how it did in Lubbock?!

You are right. Big Dee and Bubba should be in Amarillo. Thats exactly where they belong.

However, if I was looking to place a new morning show on my station... and I knew that it use to be on a station that is also a part of the my company... yeah.... I would drop them a line and see how they did before I placed them on my station. I would like to talk to someone who knew there track record. How did they do? Why did they drop them? Those things would matter A WHOLE HELL OF A LOT TO ME.

However, thats just me.

Big D and Bubba were on previously in Amarillo, and KMML never did better than a
4.5 or 5 share in morning drive while they were on. In the beginning they were very localized, but that was in the very beginning when they only had a few markets. Even then, they didn't do that well. They are notorious for repeating the 5am hour again at 8am, and from what I am hearing, they are doing it again in Amarillo. Big D and Bubba do ok in very small markets with no competition. ANything bigger than that, they stink. They excuse that is going around is that the new guys from Cumulus were looking for something to "fill the gap" for a "couple of years" while they look for something more "permanent."

W.J. Fairchild and Gary Fox were great in their day. Z-93 was quite the station at one time. Too bad Cumulus felt they had to take it hip hop to survive. Lots of bad advice. Ron Chase was by far the best P.D. and it was much more fun then too.

I'll second that. When it first hit the air (1976) Z93 was an astonishingly good station for the market size...far better than what you could get in much bigger cities. After a couple of years, they started screwing with the playlist, and could never really develop a consistent sound--It would lurch from decent to crap and back over a span of months. That was after Fairchild left for OKC (he did come back to help launch KLSF in the mid-80's, IIRC.)

You know once upon a time Amarillo had some great talent that either started there or blew through on the way to a carreer somewhere else. THe late Jay Glass, Ted of course, Rick in OKC, Janice Williams.,and ole Ron Chase was pretty decent himself when he was doing nights at KPUR.... and the list goes on. Not to much going on there these days. Good news for somebody, if the pay was closer to being acceptable. I understand one cluster there is now forcing there talent to do on locations for free now.
There are several former country jocks from Amarillo who are in the Country DJ Hall of Fame.

This is exactly what I have heard. I have been told that's part of the way the sales department are getting remotes. If I was a PD up there for that company...those remotes would not be happening on my station. If the station is getting paid, the sales person is making some money, the client is making money from the promotion etc... then my jocks are going to get paid. Thats absolutley insane. That is a matter of the SALES STAFF, GM, OM not giving a CRAP about the jocks. And this is not something that I have been told happens every once in a while...its something that happens regularly.

The LATE Jay Glass?

Details please!

J.J. McCrae aka Jay Glass left us about 8 months ago... He was 47. I am sure you can google his obit.
Never forget setting at the Bonanza Sirloin pit at I-40 and Western watching him eat not one, but TWO of the chicken fried steaks that were always HUGE there.

Wow, I had no idea and I'm sorry to hear that. Where was he when this happened?

I don't think any of us that worked with him at KPUR knew this. I'll be sure I and pass it on. Jay ..was a great talent and a very nice guy.

Lansing, Michigan WITL... he was on his way to a programming conference when he died of heart failure. He had been having some health problems in previous years.
