AMP 103.3 is flipping at 10am on 5/28

Had a feeling that this would be the format they'd go with. It's Jack FM but not. Looks like they're channeling KCBS-FM with the legal ID: "Broadcasting from a dumpy little building in Brighton."

Big 103 it has to be classic hits leaning though.

Entercom flips CHR WODS-FM (103.3 AMP Radio)/Boston to Adult Hits as "Big 103," "Music Unleashed." The Adult Hits station on 103.3 FM is now boasting a vast music library the 1980's 1990's and 2000's. Key artists include Guns N' Roses, Prince, Journey, Madonna, Pearl Jam, The Notorious B.I.G., AC/DC, Britney Spears and Blink-182, among others.

"As we continue living through one of the most challenging times in our country and the world, we are committed to providing comfort by delivering optimistic and entertaining content to our listeners," said Mark Hannon, RP/MM, Entercom Boston. "BIG 103 will be a straight-forward, no nonsense sanctuary for fans focused on great music and artists, accented with an irreverent tongue-in-cheek approach that reflects the spirit of our city."

So you'd expect the Spears and Biggie tracks to be quietly eliminated so as not to drive potential new listeners back to WROR, WBOS or WZLX?

It's a very narrow window between those stations. But all three are top rated. If this station can grab some occasional listening, it will have won.

I LOVE THIS MOVE!!!

So much for the theory touted by certain experts here that AMP's billing was too strong to pass up! LOL
(I seem to recall reading similar rhetoric here regarding WAAF. That is yet another instance where my recommendation - i.e. "sell the station!" - ultimately came to pass.)

The billing data some of you folks were viewing was likely (a) very stale or (b) based on accounting tricks designed to make the numbers look better than they truly were.

Some of us "outsiders" are smarter & wiser than you insiders think. Strategically, this will produce better results for the cluster, and it also gives Mix 104.1 wiggle room to get a bit more aggressive on new/recent hit music.

Entercom ought to make a similar format change in Atlanta; this type of Variety Hits format would serve that market well.

The billing data that actual station operators and managers get is updated monthly, and is also available on an annual basis from several paid data subscription services.

Evidently, that data isn't always very accurate. My guess is revenue from multi-station buys was being allocated to WODS in far greater proportion than reality. I have access to one of those annual paid data subscription services; the numbers reported for many of the stations in my home market don't pass the smell test.

The plot thins, er, thickens...A post on boston-radio-interest is saying a call change on way:
WBGB.
If so, maybe this isn't just a quickie format placeholder...?
Or (pure conjecture) eventually a format and
call swap: WEEI- FM Sportsradio 103.3 and
WBGB Big 93.7

OK, again just imagining...

Wikipedia (not sure how accurate):
"Entercom requested a call sign change to WBGB. The first song on "Big" was "Sweet Child o' Mine" by Guns N' Roses"

This has to be just a placeholder format!?! Entercom already has WEEI so I highly doubt a Sports format makes any sense. They should bring back the Urban AC format that they gave away to iHeart! 97.7 WKAF was doing really well given the signal with that format up against the big boys like Jam’n and Hot! Not sure why iHeart dumped the format and got rid of all the jocks on 97.7 but it would only make sense that they bring back the Urban AC format on a bigger signal and I can guarantee it would do well! This new station “Big 103” is much like the old Mike FM format that didn’t do well and the name alone reminds me of that pirate station Big City 101.3! There is a HUGE void for Urban Ac in the Boston Market with titles from Earth, Wind, and Fire and Isley Brothers for instance. We haven’t had anything close since Oldies 103! In my opinion PPM is a joke and programmers shouldn’t believe because their station has a 1 share that people aren’t listening just as much if not more as a station with a 5 share.

It's happening. If you do a call sign query on the FCC database, you'll find Entercom has requested WBGB, probably for WODS.

Why would Entercom do that? WEEI-FM is the cluster's highest biller and is usually a top-3 biller in the market. How much more would it bill moving it to 103.3, and how would Big do on a poorer signal? Granted, stranger things have happened, but I can’t see a change like that happening.

If they shift sports to a stronger signal then perhaps they could end the idiotic practice of including the Providence station in the total EEI share. You can't sell Providence numbers to local EEI-Boston advertisers.

Corona wiped out AMP. Formats like Top 40 derive a chunk of ratings from promotion of concerts/events/ticket contests/etc. With nothing going on the concert scene, young ppl have no reason to tune in to win tix to shows/concerts. Young ppl can get same music from sources other than radio. ALso, i mean no disrespect, but Kiss 108 personalities are on another level(Matty, Mikey V and Romeo) compared to what you heard on AMP. Kiss will survive Corona but an already struggling outlet like AMP had no chance.

Did they specifically announce any firings though? Maybe they are jockless due to corona virus.

They said they would be jockless, and the format is known for rejecting jocks. The specific target of Jack stations, for example, is people who hate stupid DJ chatter.

This is what the press release said:

"To further focus on the music, artists and attitude that will define the station, it will initially launch without DJs."

To me that means the door is possibly open for jocks in the future.

If this goes to pass, that will be the 2nd callsign recycled from the Jacksonville market to show up in Boston (WBWL was “600 The Ball”, a sports station about 20 years ago; WBGB was “Big 106.5”, a classic rocker around the same time.).
