AMP begins changing 102.3 fm New Carlisle

Frankly, I like the new mix and sound of the station. It is hard telling why there are so few dj's talking from the network. The 'Todays Hits and Yesterdays Favorites' moniker goes with (I believe) another network--did WAITT take over the name?

Anyway--I believe it is going after 3 stations: Sunny (*I agree), Froggy, and WETL Mix 91.7 FM. As far as Love Songs 1620 AM, I see that station being tweaked back to Adult Standards or dropped soon for another format.

VERRY INTERESTING ABOUT the Police showing up at AMP. lolol

Thank you Justa...your history is correct. Mine was not. However...shore was in quotes. The city was originally formed on the northside of the river.

Bongwater got my point and a thank you to that poster. 'The Stream' is a poor moniker. 102.3 isn't even 'streaming' on the net. Meaningless. Forgettable.

While you make your point of saying that the St. Joseph River has little significance to the local resident here (sorry, I don't agree) my point is that it is a significant landmark and, again, 'The River' makes a better statement for this station and the geographic area where it is located. Ft. Wayne has a station using that branding and there are a number of stations across the country that do likewise. Plenty of businesses in the local yellow pages here using the word river or 'river bend'. Street running alongside the river is Riverside Drive. Lots of bridges here. Want to go from point A to B?? Gotta cross the river.

'The Stream' already has plenty of issues at day number two of their life cycle. I guess when all is put in perspective, perhaps their branding is down on the list of problems.

That's still the observation from this crow's nest.

Remember When-

You hit the nail on the head. Its completely forgettable and unmemorable. The name is whats going to hurt the station.

Waitt in all honesty puts out a great product. But you have to be the architect behind making it even better. They schedule the music and voicetrack for you, thats all. Its your job to market, image and produce.

What they have and they dont understand is one of the countries greatest PD assets running things down the hall. Karen Rite has had some of the most unique and revenue generating formats in the country. She was one of the key architects behind the "She" format that helped the careers of Goo Goo Dools, Matchbox Twenty, Lenny Kravitz, etc.

AMP was only doing this to help splinter the market, which wont help things in the long run. The Stream at best will be just that. A stream of revenue flowing to Sunny.

Ur-A-Dawg-

Wow, are you serious? The name is terrible. Just as I said, all it means is "A stream of revenue flowing to Sunny"

Just a couple notes, because I have nothing better to do....Someone made a comment about "streaming on the web". Heh. When I was at AMP in 06, there was a very important memo from Art about the websites becoming a HUGE part of the business. Yet still no website for Bob down in Lafayette, ZOW still has Chili Walker as the morning show, and the corporate site still has old formats listed. Secondly, right on about Karen being one of the best. She was an incredible boss, and if anyone could right the ship, its her.

"the local resident here"? You're in the South Bend market?

The East Race seems to have more visibility and popularity than the river itself. If you asked locals what defines South Bend ... what makes the community special the East Race would come up before the river itself. If a station called itself "The River" here people would likely have the same complaint as you have about "The Stream" ... although at least there is a river people could name. I'd have a hard time finding a stream. Plenty of creeks and ditches.

Fort Wayne has three rivers ... and a fort that the city took it's name from. I'm not sure I'd put that name on a station unless it was religious, but there seem to be plenty of secular "River" stations across the country.

Yes, I agree "The Stream" is a bad name ... I don't think "The River" is much better. Is there a third option?

It could have been called Art FM. Sorry, just had to put that in there!

You would think that they would get more creative with the call letters ...
Back to WOZW 04/11/2008
FCC

(Probably Temporary ... putting WZOW back in Goshen ... FCC )

It could stand for WOZerz, this is a terrible name for a radio station!

I was in SB over the weekend and had a chance to listen to "the stream". Not a bad automated off-the-bird format, although AMP needs to understand one thing: IT'S THE SIGNAL, STUPID! 102.3 is licensed to New Carlisle, Indiana, West of South Bend. Their transmitter is between New Carlisle and South Bend broadcasting at a miniscule 3,000 watts. It barely can penetrate an office building in downtown South Bend. THAT'S where your listeners are at, Art...NOT in the car where it comes in quite clearly.

Sunny needs competition (badly).....Real competition with a stick that isn't a Class A broadcasting from out-of-town. Sunny dominates for one reason: A GOOD SIGNAL THAT COMES IN ABOUT EVERYWHERE! For those that remember way-back-when when WRBR (Rock 104) was top of the heap in the mid-to-late 1970s, all it took was WNDU-FM's (u93) big ol' stick in 1979 to knock them out in less than 6 months.

So, AMP...until 102.3 can get more power and a better stick....no format is going to garner any significant numbers in South Bend. ,,

BINGO!

See, they cant look at it like that. They have to use their play-toys to make something look pretty to the investors. AC sells (or so thats what the investors think). The investors dont know that Art overpaid for a 3,000 watt rimshot station...all they know is the station is tanking money.

He overpaid in Fort Wayne. Great ROI there haha.

They needed to create a niche in the market. Not another AC on a bad rimshot signal with a terrible name.

Even more ridiculous, funny and embarrassing for AMP is that their websites don't reflect any change to the 102.3 signal.. WZOW says it still simulcasts at 102.3 and even their corporate website has no listing of the new station, yikes! Interestingly enough, I looked at their "coverage map" for 102.3 on the website. Where the HELL did they get that thing? Here's the real thing: (although it still is a bit generous)

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM132154.html

Poor, poor AMP... This is what happens when people who know nothing about radio get in to the business.

Isnt that true! I know they were approached about flipping their AM station in Lafayette to Spanish, and everyone goffed at the idea. However Lafayette has one of the fastest growing populations in the state, and one of the fastest growing ethnic populations in the country. Right now the thing is simulcasting Adult Hits WBPE ???

What happened to ESPN 1450 in Lafayette? Or is that a Schurz station?

"ART-FM"? Remember, Art is the "Art" in ARTistic. And, the only way amp would go Spanish in Lafayette is if Waitt offered the format off the bird.

So its been about 3 months now since WZOW has not been on 102.3 and yet they are still running TV advertisements on FOX 28 and WNDU-TV every night advertising 102.3/ 97.7 WZOW.

Also look at how 102.3 is still up on the logo on their website http://www.wzow.com/ .
