Amy Lawrence on ESPN Radio Gamenight

I like Jorge Sedano a lot, but my work schedule doesn't allow me to stay up late at night to listen. Stein was listenable to me at one point when he was on FSR, but somewhere along the way, he became boring. Todd Wright, to me, is unlistenable.

I wake up at 4am everyday for work & listen to him. I heard him years ago. Jorge Sedano was someone I always thought would be a good talent. I first heard him when he was just a young kid fresh out of college doing middays on some small station in Miami you could only get in your car. I think it was 1700 on the dial. Which for me was good b/c I drive for a living. He had a partner back then named Johnny D. I used to call & tease him about how young he was. I used to call him a ,"young punk!" John Renshaw was the afternoon guy on that station. Then he went to 940 in Miami & did afternoons. That's where he became real good. He was doing the show solo & got under the skin of a lot of the old radio guys in town. He did some thing called RAPID FIRE where he would let people call in for a few seconds at a time. It lasted 2 or 3 minutes & people would just say anything they wanted to anonymously. It was a FSR station & he started doing weekends at FSR while he used to do the show in Miami. I think it's kind of cool that I heard him from the begining & can see how good he's gotten over the years. I don't think enough young talent gets cultivated in sports radio anymore. Here's a good example of that working.

He also got me to buy XM so I can listen to Czaben too when I'm driving around in the morning. Best thing that ever happend to me. Czabe is arguably one of the best talents i've ever heard. Before i got XM I had only heard Czabe a few times years ago filling in for Romey. I thought he was good, but listening to him everyday is completely different. He's hysterical. I love Czabe's website too. The guy is truly a genius.

I think the shows on FSR overall are pretty good. Some I listen to occasionally, some not at all. Though, w/ XM at least I can switch around between the networks & can listen to my local too. I like Cowherd on ESPN, that's about it. I think Cowherd is fantastic b/c like Czabe & Sedano he thinks out of the box. I think when it comes to college football there's no one better than Colin Cowherd. JT is cool too, but I'm rarely up to listen to more than just an hour these days.

The worst to me is Erik Kassileas (sp) He thinks he knows more than anyone because he is a lawyer.

A Lawyer?????? (Haaaaaaaaa) What a joke!!

The sports bash is no longer on here its covered by local guys so I haven't heard it in months anyway, but I can see your point but I always liked that he had Barry Melrose every week to talk hockey which on ESPN where hockey is basically dead to them is good.

I will be interested to see how Sedano's show does since Marcel left he and Jorge would argue and get me to listen. Karen Kay gets on my nerves mostly.

Czaban only comes on now for the first hour here so 5am is really early to hear him and Scotty and Galdi its a great show that needs to be on at a better time. I love those drops they have and Czaban's comments on certain things sports or not.

I like FSR for the most part but the best hosts IMO come on at bad times, especially Ben Maller that guy is great he should be on everyday, but hey I am not running FSR's line up I wish I did.

Just recently saw a comparison between the Fox Sports Radio product and the ESPN Radio product in a top markets and then mid range markets. The ratings for the national ESPN product was considerably better than Fox in almost every major market (I believe it was 23 of 25) and in thew mid range markets it was like two out of three where ESPN Radio was beating Fox. It does not seem that close and the advertising revenues, salaries for talent, clearance of guests is not even a discussion. I personally like them both as just a sports fan. As a radio guy the ESPN product is far more polished and professional sounding and produced. Fox or others tend to be the networks where ESPN talents go after they leave. You don't see any of the talents from the others making the jump to the big stage of ESPN.

Why do JT the Brick and Sedano say the kill the competition? they winning?

because no one is actually listening to them spout off about that I guess.
I think they both have talent, but they would kill to get the bigger ESPN stage if offered.
I would not expect that call to be coming for either of them.

Actually, I have a mgmt. mole in the biz in NYC & he looked up the ratings for the night time products for ESPN & FSR. He told me FSR does beat ESPN ratings wise in most of the top 25 markets. Obviously, not as many people listening, but they have a higher share. I was told in some cities its 2 to 1. You have to remember FSR is on some big stations at night while ESPN is on some smaller O & O's where the signals are much weaker. That was his assesment.

Could you imagine JT The Brick on ESPN? Sedano is in a good spot he is up against Smith and Stein he shouldn't think about movin'.

Why would the most listened to and highest paid host at FSR want to leave? So that you can continue to hope and pray that your favorite out of work or weekend host can have an opportunity at FSR? Go back to posting messages on the boards of your favorite scrubs and finally realize that the Brick is much more entertaining and passionate then the clowns that you listen to.
War Paris Hilton going out to dinner with Colin Cowheard!

I do like Sedano's show. Marcel will be missed.
you are right that the Sports bash did cover Hockey. and no one talks about it better than Melrose.

This is the same Amy Lawrence that started Radio in a small Oklahoma town and then worked for a 1kw am station in Norman oklahoma called KREF.

Same person...
I know she takes some heat... but its really incredible to hear how much she HAS improved since those days trying to cover a shift on the The Ref.

She's not *QUITE* as annoying as she used to be it seems. She's really a sweet girl in person, but damn she's annoying and seemingly uninformed on the air. I worked with her a few times and always thought she was very nice so I wish her well, but....

OKC Radio Guy hit it on the head...
Great gal... much improved from where she was... but still somewhat aloof on the air. Have I heard CJ Silas doing some ESPN stuff?

Yes, you have. CJ's been on for a few months and I think she does a better-than-average job.

She filled in again the past two nights on ESPN. I was listening as I drove into work and, I swear, I was tempted to stop the car, pop the hood and just suck on the exhaust manifold straight. Get it over with quickly.

My problem with her on the air is simple; she offers nothing. She has no insights, no interesting ideas, nothing. Her stories are irritating, and when she tries to make a point, she either makes no sense, or offers some worn out cliches.

Like I've posted before, when I hear the ESPN announcer say, "And now filling in for Jason Smith...." I hold my breath. If I hear "Amy Lawrence," I suddenly find the urge to listen to music. Or my brakes grinding. Anything else.

CJ Silas is absolutely AWFUL. Unlistenable.

Driving home from a station event last night, I heard Amy doing overnights. Instead of my normal reaction of putting a Jimmy Buffett CD in, I decided to listen for a bit. IMO, she wasn't all that bad, but she spent too much time reminding us about how she was doing the P.A. at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI and the commute back & forth. Overall, not too bad of a job last evening/this morning.

Well I would listen to Sedano in that time slot, Jason Smith seems like a nice guy but I can't listen to him for some reason. The only thing about Sedano is that "the crew" gets too much run and let Sedano be more of the focus. I know some may disagree but I have never been a big Karen K fan. I do miss Marcel Hall he and Jorge had a good chemistry.

Amy was pretty bad filling in for Bob Valvano on Friday night, but my favorite part was last night during the 7:20 segment on ESPN Gamenight when she co-hosted with one of the regular Gamenight hosts (Scott Van Pelt?).

Amy talked about how it was time for the San Francisco Giants to start trading away some of their veterans and claimed that David Roberts made a big impact with the Red Sox in 2004 as a part-time player.

The other host then not-so-gently corrected her and pointed out that Roberts was horrible this season, barely hitting .230, and that there was really no one on the Giants roster that was tradeable due to age or general sucktitude.

Amy then fumbled on-air and stammered and tried to claim that she meant that the Giants should trade some young prospects, but the co-host then reminded her that all of the Giants good young players were already on the team and under long-term contract, so they are not going anywhere as the Giants plan to build around them.

Amy then gave up and moved on to talking about the Buccaneers and Browns opening training camp in a little under two weeks....

---

Amy, from the times I've met her when I worked in the New York market, strikes me as a very nice girl who needs to have everything scripted out for her.

Example: If you were co-hosting with Amy and on-air Amy tried to claim that Luke Pettigout is one of the best left tackles in football, and then you pointed out in response that Luke gave up 10.5 sacks last season and Tiki Barber had his lowest yards-per-carry average on the left side, then Amy would stammer, try to make some witty comment, and then move on to whatever is next on the list of topics she keeps in front of her.
