I dig Handelman. At least years ago, when I talked to him several times, he was a dang genuine dude, willing to help out generic dorks and talk about
The Biz back when
The Biz meant a lot more than it does today.
Can't say nothing bad about the dude, might could say something "not completely, unquestionably good." He's doing what millions of other people in the world would love to be able to do. Sure not every show is riveting, but then again whose is? He has a stable of topics he milks, just like all of them. More power to him and whoever can copy him.
Nah, he doesn't always seem completely prepared on his topics, or know everything. At least he doesn't pretend like he does.
And he seems like he's stuck in the 60s-mid 80s, but maybe that's because there aren't any new bands or tv stars worth following these days. George Noury can't even seem to get that many interesting late night guests for a national show either, and realistically Art Bell The King of Late Night Radio only had a handful in years. And what afternoon talk show even has interesting guests for more than a 10-minute call-in segment, much less a whole hour? Actually none I can think of.
And on the afternoon show, sometimes people's crappy cell calls throw him off. And oh yeah, the constant statewide weather alerts he seems to have pretty often, they aren't his fault, but they could be
not so prominent a part of the show. Or at least he could ignore them and let the show keep flowing, instead of stopping the interview and waiting like he did with Paul Stanley.
The Sunday night show would be the bomb if it were more caller-oriented, but the last several times I've listened, it's not been, it's been on tape or a call-in interview.
Like I said, more power to him and anyone who can do what they love doing [that isn't illegal or immoral] for money. It would be great if he could get more interesting guests like Calvert DeForest or Al Lewis and others who are not showing up on every talk show in the world already. There has to be interesting people outside the "mainstream" that we've all seen and heard a million times. doesn't there??
It would prolly also help if he'd admit he was a flamin' libbral throwback relic and be done with the pretense, but that's another story...
