an example of how not to break the biggest news story of the year

This morning at 10 the CBS Radio News was still all about Michael Jackson. Something about a celebration/tribute to him, and with a song by Beyonce.

That passes for 5 minute TOH "news" these days?

Doug didn't make it to a Michael story until about halfway through.

Well, the thing about Handleman is....he's an idiot. If an original compelling thought ever entered his cannabis-addled brain it would die of lonliness. Think of the great acid casualties of all time...Syd Barrett, Timothy Leary...Handleman makes them look like the College of Cardinals. He's a drooling AOR burn-out and lucky to have a gig. Have you ever heard this guy interviewing an author and admit to the author and his rapidly shrinking audience that HE HASN'T READ THE BOOK? Dear sweet Jesus how many times can you have the UFO guy on or have listeners call Mighty John and ask how much their rare Jethro Tull LP is because the album sleeve depicts Ian Anderson using his flute as a dildo?

Hey-hey-hey! I'm sticking up for Handleman, here. For the most part I really enjoy his show and find him far more intellectual than most of the other drivel in the market here. I don't like the record shows, but apparently there are plenty of people who do. What's your beef with him? You sound way too personal in your comments to be just an observer. He doesn't sound like a burnout to me, and his show seems to be getting ratings, so somebody must like him.

I'll agree with both of you. ???
Okay, Handleman is a better program than the rest of the talk on the radio at any given time. The show is very listener oriented with all the calls. However, his show is better suited to being a weekly show like his Sunday night show. There are only so many topics in his repertoire. When was the last time that Handleman did something new? (Excluding books, news topics, and the like.) I've tuned in several times and had to listen for quite awhile before I figured out whether it was live or if it was a "best of" show.
Then again...isn't that the nature of radio these days...to take a song (topic), play it until your audience wants to shove a freshly sharpened pencil through each of their eardrums?

I dig Handelman. At least years ago, when I talked to him several times, he was a dang genuine dude, willing to help out generic dorks and talk about The Biz back when The Biz meant a lot more than it does today.

Can't say nothing bad about the dude, might could say something "not completely, unquestionably good." He's doing what millions of other people in the world would love to be able to do. Sure not every show is riveting, but then again whose is? He has a stable of topics he milks, just like all of them. More power to him and whoever can copy him.

Nah, he doesn't always seem completely prepared on his topics, or know everything. At least he doesn't pretend like he does.

And he seems like he's stuck in the 60s-mid 80s, but maybe that's because there aren't any new bands or tv stars worth following these days. George Noury can't even seem to get that many interesting late night guests for a national show either, and realistically Art Bell The King of Late Night Radio only had a handful in years. And what afternoon talk show even has interesting guests for more than a 10-minute call-in segment, much less a whole hour? Actually none I can think of.

And on the afternoon show, sometimes people's crappy cell calls throw him off. And oh yeah, the constant statewide weather alerts he seems to have pretty often, they aren't his fault, but they could be not so prominent a part of the show. Or at least he could ignore them and let the show keep flowing, instead of stopping the interview and waiting like he did with Paul Stanley.

The Sunday night show would be the bomb if it were more caller-oriented, but the last several times I've listened, it's not been, it's been on tape or a call-in interview.

Like I said, more power to him and anyone who can do what they love doing [that isn't illegal or immoral] for money. It would be great if he could get more interesting guests like Calvert DeForest or Al Lewis and others who are not showing up on every talk show in the world already. There has to be interesting people outside the "mainstream" that we've all seen and heard a million times. doesn't there??

It would prolly also help if he'd admit he was a flamin' libbral throwback relic and be done with the pretense, but that's another story... :D

Those two individuals would certainly be fantastic "gets", especially considering they are both deceased. ;D

True dat. I just couldn't think of anyone like that from today's world of pop culture and whatnot right off the top of my head. ;)
