an example of how not to break the biggest news story of the year

Well, it certainly isn't the "biggest news story of the year" by any stretch and just what did Handleman do wrong?

I heard him say, in so many words:

1. He wasn't a big fan (as are a lot of others).
2. Was very surprised at the death at age 50 (young by today's standards).
3. Suggested there was more to the story than a simple heart attack (speculation, but not much).

Jackson had bunches of talent, as did Elvis, but both became characterchures of themselves - Jackson ever weirder with each passing day. Unlike Elvis, Jackson was accused of criminal wrongdoing and, although not convicted, did pay off his accusers a substantial amount (thereby admitting guilt in my book).

I fail to see your issue(s).

93.9 kiss fm is playing all Michael Jackson music tonight!

I don't find anything wrong or interesting with those comments.

What I do have a problem with is how half of Raleigh's radio stations are talking about this at great lengths, some more than others. Not a problem in itself, but If a bad storm came through, a horrible traffic accident occured, some big [non entertainment] news story broke, or more or less anything else occured, radio would barely touch it.

Flip on the radio. G, K, Kiss, Bob ... all doing something with this story. In early May a lot of severe weather came through during the afternoon causing a lot of damage, and the radio more or les failed. But it's comforting to know they're all covering this. I'm glad priorities are all worked out.

Just saying.

(And for the record, I'm listening to and even enjoying what Kiss is doing tonight.)

ok yeah I exaggerated a little bit :-X :-X :-X ;)

most news stations seem like they break programming for stuff like this...WZTK didn't..there was no mention at all until the 30 break..and then took less than a minute to talk about it and moved on...

I'm with you on this..I could give a Rat's XXX about Jackson...How about Farrah Fawcett..She died today also and was a much better person in the APE's Eyes!

I agree. Severe weather is a lot more important than Michael Jackson, no matter what he did or didn't do. And typically, radio drops the ball on those situations lately. WZTK seems to break in A LOT during Handelman's show for severe weather all over NC though, so much that Handelman seems to stop the show and wait for the alerts to be over before resuming it, like he did with Paul Stanley the other week.

If Handelman's not a fan, he's probably better off not talking much beyond a minute or so about Michael Jackson anyway. Actually most other radio people, especially talk stations, would probably be best off doing that....

Or The Dave Clark Five.

"The biggest news story of the year." Really?

--First African-American President
--GM and Chrysler both file for bankruptcy
--U.S. Airways Flight 1549
--Air France crash off Brazil
--North Korea fires missiles
--Worst U.S. economy since the 30's
--S.C. Governor goes AWOL
--Iran election mess
--War in Afghanistan escalates

And those are just the few that come to mind. I'm probably missing some.

Listening to the radio, you would think it's the biggest story of the year.

Listening to the radio, maybe excluding news stations, you might not have heard of half the other stories.

FAIL.

Biggest in terms of shock value - nobody expected it. We all expect generally that there'll be plane crashes, and hostile nations with missiles - and the economy and obama getting elected have all been kind of ongoing.

I think we all have also come to expect general crazy crap from Michael Jackson... but nobody expected him to drop dead like that. "Biggest" may not be the best word, but "Biggest in terms of shock value" is certainly true.

I agree. EVERY station regardless of format around the country was talking about thedeath of Michael Jackson. Those kinds of stories don't happen too much. I just wonder what happens if the news breaks about about 8pm after all the voicetracks are in.....

Just saying.

Isn't that the REAL problem: That Handelman never has much of anything provocative or interesting to say about ANYTHING?

And who does?

Who could have said anything interesting about this? The responses are predictable. There were basically three responses to this: those that didn't care at all like Handelman, those who made a big show of caring like Kiss-FM, and those who spent time talking about how they didn't care like Bob on G105. I mean, I knew from the start that Kiss would suck up to Jackson and that Bob on G would spend time making waves about how it wasn't such a big deal and that everyone shouldn't go crazy because someone died.

Those responses were predictable in themselves.

Handelman did nothing wrong. Hell, at least he didn't pretend to care.

Handelman takes the Jim Rome axiom "Have a take and don't suck" and turns it on it's head. DON'T have a take and SUCK.

??? ??? I'm more upset about "Billy Mayes" dying at 50...Whose gonna do all those ad's now???BIG APE

Friday morning at 10, Doug Limerick's ABC newscast was all-Michael before the commercial break. No Farrah at all.

Kiss is gone and I can't pick up WQMG for some reason, but in Charlotte, WBAV seemed to be all-Michael.
