An exciting time in Lubbock Radio!

Whether you agree or disagree with some of the changes that are taking place, you have to admit, its been an exciting time in Lubbock radio!

Just in the past year we've had:
Clear Channel exits Lubbock, GAP makes big changes in management
A battle of the 104s (guess who lost?)
The addition of 97.3 to the Lubbock metro.
The return of Kiss to the market via 102.5
Kool 98 putting Landon in the mornings, and the nationally heard Ron Grant in afternoons
1340 getting an actual name, "The Fan"
105.3's move in, with Jack, and then True Country
Imus on 1420
(The KJDL stations might be a story all their own)

And the big big BIG story?
The exodus of Tech Sports from the former Gulsatar stations to RAMAR
with the creation of TT104.3

Did I miss anything?

This has been quite an eventful year in Lubbock radio. Its fun watching Lubbock dominate the Texas board. It's even cooler to see stories about Lubbock radio appear on the home page of radio-info (if you didn't see, Hot 104.3 flipping was on the home page this morning). This city and market has changed so much since I moved out here in 2005. Sadly, this may be my last year in Lubbock since i'll be graduating from Tech next May :-[ but I can safely say I have learned a lot from you guys on here and have enjoyed discussing all these crazy changes in Lubbock and look forward to continuing the discussions about Lubbock radio as this city continues to grow.

What's your major Eggs?
DG, my major is Electronic Media and Communications. I'm hoping to go into TV after graduation because the radio business seems shaky right now and many people on here have told me to pick another field for now (although, it seems like Lubbock radio is holding up just fine!). I hope to be able to do both someday -- because I really love doing camera and video editing work.

Ah EM&C- I know it well. I taught some of Dr. Chambers' classes when he was undergoing chemo a few years back. Good program I think, and it's vastly improved from when I was an undergrad.

As for TV- good luck. TV is having as many or slightly more problems than radio right now. The TV discussion groups I monitor reveal LOTS of issues going on in their biz- most of which isn't good. Layoffs, entire newsrooms closed, and even some stations going dark, just to name a few. But good luck to you! Maybe things will improve some by May...

This is why I'm considering graduate school to ride out the nasty economy as much as I can -- but, if you need help at KOHM, feel free to let me know ;D. I would really like to do both radio and TV (like Ryan Seacrest)

Also, to add to that, the reason I said this "MAY" be my last year is because Lubbock is holding up much better in this economy than all the other markets -- so there could be a good chance that I'm going to try to start my career out here. I'm really going to go wherever a job takes me. I'm hoping to do some camera work for KTXT-TV in the near future.

---------

Now to steer things back on topic -- Garrett, I have a few things to add.

1. KTXT being closed down (although that was more sad for me than exciting)
2. KLVT call letters being changed to KJDL and them getting a power upgrade to cover Lubbock better.
3. Stars 104.3 and Hot 97.3 swapping frequencies.

...there may be more. Those are the few I can think of right now.

I came up with a couple more!

God's Country on 107.3, 94.1, and 99.1

Air 1 moving to a new 100,000 watt signal on 91.9 West of Lubbock -- thus making KJAK not the only 100,000 watt Christian station in Lubbock anymore.

A few more...

- Bob&Tom going from FMX to 101
- The juggling of 105.7
- KLLL's on air changes in the early spring

the book's going to be very interesting...

may the Best God (station) win!

Speaking of KFMX, do you think if Lubbock were to get a modern rock station, it would kill FMX's ratings? If anything new happens this year in Lubbock radio, I think it would make things very interesting to see someone go after KFMX or KZII.

Would it kill KFMX? Probably not. Would it hurt them? Likely so.

I too would like to see a new challenger to FMX...

Any attempt at Modern Rock would have to sandwich themselves between KFMX and KMMX (who play a ton more modern rock than you may realize). I don't know of anybody who would want to be in the middle of those two monsters. In addition you have KISS FM playing the crossover modern rock and the biggest problem of all-the people who listen to that stuff are probably THE most likely to have Ipods, Iphones and/or some other music player and are not likely to turn on the radio no matter what. Modern Rock (the Edge) just took a huge dump in Dallas and if it isn't working there, it has no chance in little ole Lubbock.

Correction: The Edge (modern rock) is actually up in the latest numbers for Dallas. Still, to be sandwiched between those two formats in Lubbock is an unenviable position.

As I heard Lubbock radio veteran Lew Dee once exclaim:

"What works for Lubbock radio doesn't necessarily work elsewhere, and what works elsewhere doesn't necessarily work in Lubbock."

I've seen that confirmed in various ways over the short span of my Hub City radio career...

I have talked to several KFMX listeners. Each and everyone of them have told me that they hate it when they play several classic rock songs in a row but not enough modern rock. Even though they are an active rock station, I think classic rock is way overplayed. If there is an active rock station that is worth listening to, it's 99.9 KBAT out of Midland. I think the Odessa-Midland numbers have proven it too. They are almost the top station in Midland. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Oh how I wish we could have a station up here that sounds like KBAT. It sounds 10x better than FMX and it brings me joy when tropo brings KBAT to Lubbock.

Wow...how profound!

Anybody who's been in radio for 6 months can say that about any city, any market...any where

Yes, and yet we see the same stale radio formats here in Lubbock that are ubiquitous in every other market- some doing ok, and others not.
