An observation on WFAN

This may be a mild nitpick, or perhaps it's just something that goes on behind the scenes at WFAN, but I just wanted to throw it out there.

During WFAN's 20/20 Flashes, we'll always hear the Metrostars...erm, FC Red Bull score if they played that night, or the score of the Liberty or Sun WNBA game.

But why don't we ever hear any NASCAR coverage?

I could be wrong - but I don't recall ever hearing a front sell of a race, or a quick 10 second results - "Jeff Gordon won the Nascar race in Chicago today, but Jimmy Johnson still remains the overall points leader."

I consider myself hyper observant - and even though the closest tracks to the WFAN listening area are either Pocono or Dover, I still see a lot of people wearing NASCAR gear than I do WNBA or MLS.

Even the ratings reflect locally, there's a lot more interest in NASCAR than there is the WNBA or MLS.

One of the theories is that you would have to mention Nextel - who I don't believe is a sponsor on WFAN - in order to properly identify the race.

Now, I know the following things:

WFAN did a NASCAR promotion back in May. Undoubtedly, it was tied into a buy.

Neer interviewed Chris Myers a few weeks ago, and they did a break on NASCAR.

However, I have never heard sustained (keyword) NASCAR coverage on WFAN, even when the MLS and WNBA get play.

So the question is, why?

I just heard the 9:40 Flash and I listened very carefully. World Cup and Wimbledon deservedly got play, but the WNBA score was mentioned and the NASCAR results were not.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...

Ann Liguori dedicated at least an hour of her show, if not more, to WNBA topics last night. She took NO calls after the Mets had a TREMENDOUS win last night.

I got so annoyed I turned it off and started watching Rescue Me on TIVO...

I like Ann Liguori. She's a capable broadcaster. BUT NOBODY WATCHES THE WNBA. You shouldn't dedicate a majority of your show to the WNBA when you're not taking calls.

She had a WNBA break - then a Tommy John interview - then more WNBA stuff. Why?

Maybe to offer a brief alternative to the non-stop Mets talk that fills all the other hours?

Do the WNBA segments get calls? Does the Liberty run spots on WFAN or do promotions with them? Could be commerce, too.

As far as I know, the Liberty do not have a buy with FAN. I've never heard tix being given away, or spots on-air. The sole purpose for Liguori spending an exorbitant amount of time on the WNBA was because the All-Star game was in NYC.

Nobody cares about all-star games a few days after the game in any sport, so why should we care about the WNBA? Yes, Liguori is one of the few female sports broadcasters on the FAN, but on an eventful Sunday, she should be talking about stuff that means something to the people who are listening.

wfan needs new on-air talent iam sick of the same people like richard neer , steve sommers and even mike and the mad dog they need new good sports people and maybe younger people for weekands and overnite. the other thing is that 20/20 sports update thing is a little annoying becauce they get into a good call and they have to cut them off and theose guys are worse saying the sports too fast slow down and fix the wfan.

Steve Sommers could be the coolest guy in the history of radio and Mike and Mad Dog are gods...even if Mike has the fattest melon on this planet. The Fan does not need fixing. Try listening to sports radio in any other part of the country and you will realize just how awesome the Fan is.

You want to know why there isnt Nascar coverage, well see the reasons why there isnt a country station in NYC. Done.

Second you contradict yourself. You complain they dont cover all sports then whine about them covering the WNBA. huh?

Stop hating WFAN. You look like you have an agenda.

Brush up on your reading comprehension.

I asked why WFAN covers MLS and WNBA, yet don't cover NASCAR when NASCAR's market share and ratings are much, much bigger than the MLS and WNBA combined.

There's also a difference between dedicating 10-15 seconds in a 20/20 sports report to the results of the NASCAR race than an entire Country station.

The only other thing I questioned was why Ann Liguori dedicated a large portion of her show to the WNBA all-star game, when there has been no interest shown in it by the WFAN callers.

[EDIT], maybe she is a fan of the WNBA? Just a guess.

[EDIT]=inappropriate comment

Mine? I understood your point, and I like everyone else so far disagreed. Man that statement makes you look childish.

I asked why WFAN covers MLS and WNBA, yet don't cover NASCAR when NASCAR's market share and ratings are much, much bigger than the MLS and WNBA combined.

Because WFAN is a NY sports station and there is no NASCAR track here, yet there is MLS team was well as a WNBA team. If you hate the the WNBA (which it certainly looks that way) then fine, but dont blame that on not hearing what you want.

There's also a difference between dedicating 10-15 seconds in a 20/20 sports report to the results of the NASCAR race than an entire Country station.

You definately missed my point.

The only other thing I questioned was why Ann Liguori dedicated a large portion of her show to the WNBA all-star game, when there has been no interest shown in it by the WFAN callers.
Again, in your opinion. There is a team here and they deserve to be covered.

...you called me out on "hating" on WFAN. That's further from the truth than anything.

NASCAR is a *national* sport. Even if there was a track in the New York area, races would only be here once, at most twice a year. And as I said before, there's three tracks within WFAN's broadcast range - Pocono, Dover, and Loudon.

The point is that more people in the New York area and WFAN listening area watch NASCAR than watch the WNBA and MLS combined. So I was curious why WFAN doesn't include them in the 20/20. My comments on Liguori was simply a sidetrack from the initial subject.

I don't "hate" the WNBA - I just can't get into it and the only reason it's survived for so long is because the NBA's been bankrolling it - but it's painfully obvious that there's not a big audience for it.

Imus gives time to NASCAR, but of course he is national.

However, the FAN is now international on the web. There are certainly NASCAR fans in the NYC Metro regardless of the lack of a track. There is NASCAR on TV after all.

Their lack of seven a little coveragge makes no sense.

Nascar isn't a "sport".

Stop, let's not get into this. It's a competiton, which relies on strategy and technology and engineering.

perhaps. could careless about whether people think it's a sport or not. But when being I'm being squeezed for 3.30 a gallon I cant help but think about how much good use that gas is really going for.

Considering they use leaded gas, probably not a lot.

considering it all comes from the same crude oil that we can't refine fast enough to meet our energy guzzling needs, probably alot. Thanks.

Are you just as concerned about all the jet fuel used flying MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL teams all over the continent?

Feel free in your hyperfocused loss of the big picture to carry out a one-man protest of Sunoco, as they are the sole supplier of fuel to NASCAR. Now, do you have anything relevant to add to the original topic at hand, or can we move on?
