To the extent that I won dance contests in the days of disco I won't go too hard on the genre. Of course, I am also extremely confident that such will not be repeated in any fashion, under any circumstances, regardless the genre or venue.

Careful! I don't agree or disagree (disclaimer). But, ironically, watching "Idol" for the first time this season last night..I noticed the opposite. With an entire session based on this genre...and then a "special segment" line up of Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and KC of Sunshine Band fame attempting to perform live...I have to wonder. Granted Simon's eyebrows were up alot, but if your point is true, I highly doubt this production would be dabbling in these waters.

T'was I to whom I referred when I said such would not be repeated. That was so long ago that there are only two ways such could ever be repeated. It's better if it isn't, although I know there are those who feel that since they missed out on the party they should get a whack at it too, playing dress ups and all, and finding any number of ways to express themselves.

Tis now I see the light! Twas you that attended the funeral...that others now are resurrecting Thus, Silkie, has dimmed the lights, left us this way, and shall see no more boogie nights. :(

Thread content requirement- "Play Me " Neil Diamond

It was a good time back in the day. The best anyone can hope for is to bring back a different version of it while using the music.

Oh...wait....how could I have forgotten the timeless Incredible Bongo Band......??

Or "Jungle Drums" by Earl Bostic

BTW "Midnight In Moscow" is a classic Dixieland sound from 1969(?) - Great pick

and..

The Horse (Cliff Nobles & Co.) led up to KB Radio News with Joe Downey numerous times on the Sandy Beach Show.

How that's locked in my memory bank is beyond me.

Anything to do with Sandy Beach is locked in many peoples memories!! ;D (self decision on "good" or "bad" memories")

Anyone remember Jim Photoglo?

And don't forget Walk Don't Run - Ventures
as a news walk-up.

That's the reason Walk Don't Run became popular
is because the DJ's would start playing that song to
walk up to news out in Seattle - I think that's where
those boys are from?
It became a regional hit and then moved on to greatness.

Duane Eddy's Because They're Young. Nice short song - 1:50
Of course not just the instrumentals-but the Bleach Boys
Little Duece Coup rang in at 1:32.
Leslie Gore's Sunshine and Lollipops came in at a buck and a half.

I grabbed Duane Eddy's song many times at 'GR. Boy I still remember
the cart number. 1260

Horst Radknowski... eh, Jankowski, "Walk In The Black Forest." Worked perfectly with the ABC News Sig if you hit it right. Might even be in the same key.

OK, I'll play.

The original version of "Stay" by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs - 1:34.

"TSOP" by MFSB (The Sound of Philadelphia by Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, and Brothers)

Next?

"TSOP" by MFSB (The Sound of Philadelphia by Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, and Brothers)

Oh, you come out the chute!!! That will be tough to beat!! You need :15 or you need :45 TSOP will do it!! (hell, the first minute of "The Hustle" gets the news guy psyched!! Back in the day -of course)

BTW - a great tune to drive to if you an a road trip!! :D

Opting out of unestablished content rules - this puppy took on a life of it's own for the next ?? replies :D

One more instrumental that'll get you to the top of the hour....

"Pick Up the Pieces" by the (much better than) Average White Band.

Also works with the volume cranked up and the windows cranked down.

For your consideration: (I'm asking for forgiveness in advance! :) )

first a shotgun sugue....... then the 1968 song (peaked at 29 on Billboard and 32 on Cash Box).........

"Love is Blue" by Claudine Longet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maybe the song isn't a stiff, but her lover in Aspin was certainly a stiff after being shot!
It goes back further--1961. Hearing it today reminds me of the first time I heard it, coming off the Skyway heading to the Southtowns in '61.
More:
"Baby Elephant Walk" - Henry Mancini
"Quiet Village" - Martin Denny
"The Lonely Surfer" - Jack Nitzsche Orchestra
"Cast Your Fate to the Wind" - Vince Guaraldi
...and let's not forget the sequel to "Pick Up the Pieces": "Cut the Cake"
Good stuff - tipped a few brews to these!
:D :D :D Where is this thread!!! (not that it matters! - Radnowski is sipping a Pabst, lovin it)(Savage is still trying to work out his citizenship)
If we're at TOH fill (instead of stiffs - well maybe not-like there was a difference) - Ventures providing Hawaii-5-0
Just to bring this thread back on track, I wonder how many of those instrumentals got a LOT of extra airplay from jocks backtiming (badly) into the TOH news. Songs like:
"Outa-Space" - Billy Preston
"Frankenstein" - Edgar Winter
Heyday of Radio!!! ;D Back when it was fun, for no reason at all!!
"Outa-Space" - Billy Preston
"Frankenstein" - Edgar Winter
95% odds these were dayparted which meant even more fun!! (ain't live jock's more personal than a computer?) :D
Back on thread.....help, I'm lost.......
Hi Sir,
As I mentioned a couple of posts back, that's how the Ventures got on the board with Walk Don't Run. Cuz the Ventures being a regional band submitted Walk Don't Run to a local radio station and it was used to hit the TOH news - then it caught on and became a hit for the boys.
I've got a song that we used at the top of the hour - well actually it wasn't a song but a sound effect. Since the station didn't have the money to invest in a time tone generator we played a recorded 'tone' off of a cart at the top of the hour to make it sound like we had a time tone generator.
We'd fire off the legal - hit the news and 'by the way' hit the tone cart to produce the TOH tone.
I don't think we did it at the bottom of the hour - twice. I think 'KB did it at the bottom.
Another idea,
to backtime to the TOH did anybody ever play a record on turntable #2 and then grab the tone arm from turntable #1 and put it on the record on turntable #2 and crossfade the song you were playing to make it sound longer or to gain some extra time? You would listen to Table #1 in cue and table #2 would be on the air and at just the right time you'd cross fade the pots.
Not sure if anyone mentioned Time Is Tight - Booker T. and his MG's
or Green Onions by them.
Ramsey Lewis' - In crowd - '65 or Wade in the Water.
Dr. Don Wade on WYSL - that wasn't your theme song then was it?
So what if the thread isn't following format, we ain't readin' liner cards or babysitting the automation, we're making it up as we go!
Our side-trip down instrumental lane isn't complete without a mention of Buffalo's own Spyro Gyra with "Morning Dance" and Ra-cha-cha's Chuck Mangione and "Feels So Good"
Allow another side-trip on this thread with a theme: For the Birds!
Eternity's Children "Mrs. Bluebird" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFHwi0BlxUg
Buffalo's Jack Blanchard and Misty Morgan "Tennessee Birdwalk"
To me, "The Horse" is locked in with (ohmigod, really showing my age here) with Jack Palvino at WBBF- going into news- used as a bed to take care of whatever little bits he had. To this day I can hear his voice mentally when this tune plays...I guess he got the job done!
LOL, holy cripe Bill... that should have been, if only I was paying attention at the time. (BTW, never liked being tagged with that jock name because the REAL Don Wade is a radio legend, IMHO.) I particularly liked "Perfidia" by the Ventures, "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny, (a killer cover version is done by Jeff Beck) and a genuine stiff, though also a groovy little ditty (not about Jack & Dianne) called "Twine Time" by Alvin Cash and The Crawlers. Add "Topsy, Part 2" for the Saturday Night House Party and a Classic Stax-Volt session song "Last Night" by Booker T & the MGs and you're good to go.
Congratulations to our mud-slinging (I mean that in a good way!), beer-drinking friend - Mike Radknowski! I just checked. This thread crossed the six month threshold earlier this week.
No disrespect, Mike. But, is it yet another sign of just how "fubarred" the radio business is that we've spent this much time discussing stiffs, etc rather weightier radio matters?
Ah, hell! It's been a nice diversion!
You want "weightier radio matters"? You want "stiffs"? I submit "Farid Suleman".
What's the difference between Farid Suleman and Nadia Suleman?
At least Nadia put her own eggs into the basket.
