To the extent that I won dance contests in the days of disco I won't go too hard on the genre. Of course, I am also extremely confident that such will not be repeated in any fashion, under any circumstances, regardless the genre or venue.

Careful! I don't agree or disagree (disclaimer). But, ironically, watching "Idol" for the first time this season last night..I noticed the opposite. With an entire session based on this genre...and then a "special segment" line up of Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and KC of Sunshine Band fame attempting to perform live...I have to wonder. Granted Simon's eyebrows were up alot, but if your point is true, I highly doubt this production would be dabbling in these waters.

T'was I to whom I referred when I said such would not be repeated. That was so long ago that there are only two ways such could ever be repeated. It's better if it isn't, although I know there are those who feel that since they missed out on the party they should get a whack at it too, playing dress ups and all, and finding any number of ways to express themselves.

It goes back further--1961. Hearing it today reminds me of the first time I heard it, coming off the Skyway heading to the Southtowns in '61.

As I mentioned a couple of posts back, that's how the Ventures got on the board with Walk Don't Run. Cuz the Ventures being a regional band submitted Walk Don't Run to a local radio station and it was used to hit the TOH news - then it caught on and became a hit for the boys.

I've got a song that we used at the top of the hour - well actually it wasn't a song but a sound effect. Since the station didn't have the money to invest in a time tone generator we played a recorded 'tone' off of a cart at the top of the hour to make it sound like we had a time tone generator.
We'd fire off the legal - hit the news and 'by the way' hit the tone cart to produce the TOH tone.
I don't think we did it at the bottom of the hour - twice. I think 'KB did it at the bottom.

Another idea,
to backtime to the TOH did anybody ever play a record on turntable #2 and then grab the tone arm from turntable #1 and put it on the record on turntable #2 and crossfade the song you were playing to make it sound longer or to gain some extra time? You would listen to Table #1 in cue and table #2 would be on the air and at just the right time you'd cross fade the pots.

To me, "The Horse" is locked in with (ohmigod, really showing my age here) with Jack Palvino at WBBF- going into news- used as a bed to take care of whatever little bits he had. To this day I can hear his voice mentally when this tune plays...I guess he got the job done!

LOL, holy cripe Bill... that should have been, if only I was paying attention at the time. (BTW, never liked being tagged with that jock name because the REAL Don Wade is a radio legend, IMHO.) I particularly liked "Perfidia" by the Ventures, "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny, (a killer cover version is done by Jeff Beck) and a genuine stiff, though also a groovy little ditty (not about Jack & Dianne) called "Twine Time" by Alvin Cash and The Crawlers. Add "Topsy, Part 2" for the Saturday Night House Party and a Classic Stax-Volt session song "Last Night" by Booker T & the MGs and you're good to go.
