And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

"Did Motown ever have any stiffs?" Well......YEAH! But they were good ones.

"Just Look What You've Done," 1967 Brenda Holloway - nowhere on the charts but a real cooker, turntable fave. Brenda also covered Blood Sweat & Tears with a creditable "You've Made Me So Very Happy."

Smokey Robinson did "Special Occasion" in '69. And Martha Reeves' 1971 "Bless You."

How 'bout Brenda and her Tabulations:
Right on the Tip of my Tongue

Sonny Charles and his Checkmates
Black Pearl

Brenda Holloway

You've Made Me So Very Happy

Gladys Knight and her Pips

End of the Road - great mover.

Those are my sticks I'm adding to the campfire at Lake Stiff.

Is that the Highwaymen's Michael Row Your Boat Ashore I hear
on the other side of the campfire?

Heard Paul Davis' "'65 Love Affair" today while waiting in line to check out at a store. It's from the "Cool Night" LP. Davis' haunting "I Go Crazy" has already been mentioned in this thread. Heard that on one of the Toronto FM AC stations a few weeks back. Sounded tasty at the time but I wouldn't want to hear it every day... or every third or fourth day.

Soul not-so-stiff: Al Wilson, "The Snake."

Kenny Nolan's - I like Dreamin'.

Reminds me of a girl that called me up from Toronto once when I was on the air at 'GR. It was her favorite song.
Anyone remember the phone number at 'GR?
'KB was 644-9850.
'GR was 644-9880??
'YSL 644-????
'BEN 644-9830??

"Pick Up the Pieces" by the (much better than) Average White Band.
...and let's not forget the sequel to "Pick Up the Pieces": "Cut the Cake"
Good stuff - tipped a few brews to these!

:D :D :D Where is this thread!!! (not that it matters! - Radnowski is sipping a Pabst, lovin it)(Savage is still trying to work out his citizenship)

If we're at TOH fill (instead of stiffs - well maybe not-like there was a difference) - Ventures providing Hawaii-5-0

Hawaii-5-0 is a great up-tempo number as long as you don't have to come out of it talking about a dog dying... ;) Another up-tempo instrumental: Rhythm Heritage- Theme From SWAT

A tribute to this thread. After 71 pages, 10680 views, 705 replies I offer this... (nope, not a single tune)
Last night I happened to surf through some cable TV (yes, the competition) and find a little diddy program selling "Time-Life" collections. I'm sure you're familiar with it. This was "Romancing the 70's". Good collection!! It contained some power house hits AND some power house STIFFS (well, according to this thread). Anyways, that's not the point here.

The point stems from a quote from the "unknown pitchwoman" (NOT Tony Orlando- who has a bad toupee' BTW)... that tweeked my interest to present here. The quote is "let's face it, you don't here this music on the radio anymore" ???

So, in attempting to stay in good graces with the thread.... If the stiffs keep on coming, and they aren't played on the radio anymore...why is Time-Life capitalizing on it with 5 easy payments of just $29.99 + shipping and handling? I won't attempt to present personal opinions here, nor would I reject a suggestion to "start a new thread". I just find it interesting to combine the two concepts, and one is making money, and the other isn't ???
(Disclaimer - "Time-Life" products are not exclusive to the 70's)

Regards to the posters & readers

Today I heard a new cover of "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" Whoda thunk they could get such mileage out of the one-hit wonder group Steam!

That brought to mind a couple of stiff covers: The Nylons, "Happy Together" and "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)"

----------------------

The contest line at WGR was 644-9885

WBEN was 644-9875

WNYS was 644-9870

Actually each station had a trunk of five lines, so occasionally while working at WNYS, the light would go off on 644-9874 (somebody had mis-dialed WBEN's 9875 and got us).

While tempted to answer as a BEN jock and trick the caller to think they had actually won a prize, I didn't have the heart.

Other jocks at the station weren't so kind hearted!

Some of 'em are getting played, on stations like Legends 102.7 in Rochester and to a degree, WCBS-FM down in New York (which is the #3 station 12+ and 25-54 among over 60 stations in market #1, which ought to tell programmers something).

One other thing, though...correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the original of 'Bend Me, Shape Me' done by the American Breed, a Chicago band that later hired Chaka Khan as lead singer, changed its name to Rufus back around 1974 and came out with 'Tell Me Something Good'?

It's not even a song so it's certainly not a stiff but "May Day! May Day! May Day!" is a classic for Sabres fans! ;D

I think you could be on to something. Good idea! Start the thread, I'll contribute. "You've got to ask yourself one thing... do I feel lucky?"

Here's a stiff that was played every night just before midnight on KB for about a year:

"Very Interesting" by Arte Johnson and Ruth Buzzi.
