And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

How old was that clip when it became public? I first heard it in 1989, when "Shannon" would have been 13 years old...and Casey's countdown still aimed at CHR.

Yes I'm overthinking things again. So I'll leave another stiff at the door...

Stories - "Darling" (realllly stiff follow up to "Brother Louie").

Pardon the interruption ;)

For whatever reason, possibly Pabst could be to blame, I had an inspiration to look to see when "we" last heard from RADNOWSKI...I believe the creator of "This Neverending Story" referred to here as "And the Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'"
It was December 4th..of the last year past!!!

Is he still painting, chasing barmaids, interacting with Aunts & Uncles...and generally causing mischief among wanna be radio geeks at weddings & funerals?? :D

Please use the "Suggestion Box" located in the Men's Room for any possible clues to his whereabouts! He still has to answer for this Monster. ;)

HDBG

Ya know, HDBG, I've been wondering the same thing? ??? Hopefully he didn't inhale too many paint fumes? ;D Sorry I can't add a stiff to this comment but I'm constantly amazed by how knowledgeable the usual suspects (you know who you are ;) ) on this thread are. I hope everyone has a great weekend! :)

Happy St. Pat's weekend to all! (I tried to reply to HDBG a couple times without luck and all of the sudden two different replies of mine popped up. I seem to be unable to delete so I'm modifying the 2nd reply) Now, back to the Stiffs irregular programming! ;D

At least I know it's not me...I had a couple replies disappear and then pop up after a minute or two. Strange today...

I'll cover your stiff...America's "Amber Cascades" died at #75.
And add one for me: their remake of "California Dreamin'" get to #56 and petered out.

And here's another remake of "California Dreamin'" that died at #57 around the Holidays, 1986. I played it at the tiny full-service AM in Weirton, WV where I was APD/MD/AM Drive...thought the Beach Boys sounded good on it...

It took several weeks, but I just made it through the 173rd page. I could list many titles, but many have (amazingly) already been noted. This is from a Cincinnati/Dayton/Columbus point of view...in the event an already mentioned one slips through, my apologies. The station it was heard on is noted with the title:

Holy Modal Rounders - Boobs A Lot WKRQ

Blue Cheer - Hello L.A., Bye Bye Birmingham WNCI

Blaize - Silver Heels WKRQ

Blaize - Jamie WKRQ

Alive And Kicking - London Bridge WNCI

Lemon Pipers - Turn Around And Take A Look WSAI

Ides Of March - Melody WNCI

Phil Ochs - Outside Of A Small Circle Of Friends WUBE

Johnny Thunder - I'm Alive WSAI

Byrds - Full Circle WKRQ

Cowsills - On My Side WONE FM

Mason Profitt - Two Hangmen WNCI

Mason Profitt - Hope WNCI

Jet Stream - All's Quiet On West 23rd WUBE

These are the ones that either didn't chart or were lower than the top 100. But they all played on the radio in the SW quarter of Ohio. Any of these stiffs get played elsewhere?

Back to The Ides of March. I remember this being the follow up to vehicle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zowQYsrMLIQ.
I remember the song well because I covered it with Weekend on my---ahem---legendary unreleased LP by Ben Steel and His Bear Hans.

I also saw a most interesting song cover the other day when Dan Neaverth showed me an album by NRBQ that contained their version of Rats In My Room (!).

The only thing I can figure here is that NRBQ's Al Anderson had been in The Wildweeds, a local Hartford, Conn band that was played by WDRC when Joey Reynolds worked there, and he must have heard Joey play the song on the radio at some point.

"Holy Modal Rounders - Boobs A Lot WKRQ"

Used to be an almost daily play on the Flying Dutchman's morning show on WNDR in Syracuse back in '74...I think he even got it back on their charts for a while although I don't think it moved into the national action.

"Mason Profitt - Two Hangmen WNCI"

A real 1971-era album rock turntable hit, used to play regularly on WCMF, WPHD, 97 Rock, and WVBR down in the Finger Lakes, not to mention CHUM-FM. I think they all picked it up from Scott Muni at WNEW-FM in NYC.

Don't mean to roll a gutter ball and go off the thread -->>
but I've gotta imagine this song would be a stiff.

Has anybody heard the song 'Country Gardens'?.
It's a take off of Ricky Nelson's song 'Garden Party' but
instead of naming all the rock and rollers (opened up the closet
door and outstepped Johnny B. Goode) it was changed to country
stars. (opened up the closet door and outstepped JohnnyCash).

I haven't heard this song in a good 35 years or so. Probably
something I heard on WWOL or WXRL.

Anyone heard of this version of Ricky's song?

Not sure of who the artist is - I just know the song's called
Country Gardens.

Okay, I thought I could cover up my tracks and hide my mistake.
:)
I consulted Mr. Google and found out it's Johnny Lee and the
song's called Country Party. It reached 15 on the country charts
in May of '77. Here's the link to the song -->>

Do I get any points for answering my own question?
Sorry for the interruption ladies and guys.
Now back to our regularly scheduled thread.
Next time I'll do my research before I come to class.
I also didn't realize the Modify feature timed out on me before
I had a chance to cover up my mistake.
Being in radio, I guess we're used to broadcasting our screw-ups.

While Two Hangmen didn't chart, I do have a 45 of it. WNCI/Columbus (still with same calls but a far different format) was in interesting station in the 70-71 era. Two Hangmen and Sweet and Innocent would play back to back with a laid back almost AOR presentation. I heard a lot of great stiffs there...and usually bought them.

I forgot one other uncharted stiff, but truly one of my favorite songs of all time.

Sixth Day Creation - Cherry Pie WSAI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h5L5mQEPcg

I'm not sure that they'd even qualify for a stiff, but "Mom's Apple Pie" sure caused a sensation with their album cover in 1972...

http://sleevage.com/moms-apple-pie-moms-apple-pie/

BTW, they were a 10 member band from Warren, Ohio who recorded on Terry Knight's label in Cleveland. They had a pretty good touring career. I remember playing this one on college radio.

Then again, maybe it was just an excuse the pull out the album cover...

You should have heard my show last Friday...Murphy and his Law were there...I'm surprised I still have a job. The PD was beyond gracious.

Your "Country Party" reminds me of a Buck Owens cover of "The Cover Of Rolling Stone", titled "On The Cover Of Music City News". It was out in 1974 and hit #9. And it was truly as bad as you would think. Amazing such a legend would stoop to that; then again Tammy Wynette did a vomitific cover of "Sometimes When We Touch", as a duet with Mark Grey. And Conway Twitty covered "The Rose".

DB, I have a radio station copy of "Very Interesting"...I remember it well as your sign off.

I wanna say 13Q/Pittsburgh played "Boobs A Lot". At least for a short time.

I don't remember Mom's Apple Pie, but I recall Brown Bag Records.

Owell...now here's a truly stiff stiffiloni. In fact it was a stiffiloni twice!

The Beach Boys "It's OK". #29 in 1976 and #82 in 1985.

The follow up to Music Explosion - Little Bit Of Soul was at least an equal...the song was made for AM radio...a shame that Sunshine Games only hit #63. Boss Radio, WUBE/Cincinnati (the only known Drake station operating with 250 watts at night) belted this one out in 1967.
