And The Stiffs Just Keep On Comin'

I can remember seeing an interview on MTV with Dexy's Midnight Runners when "Come On Eileen" was a hit and they said they didn't want to be known as a one-hit wonder. Guess what? ;D

I'm reaching the end of my "collections" albums in my quest to get my favourite songs digitzied...and I just came across the amazing Sire "Nuggets" compilation featuring such gems as The Mojo Men "Sit Down I Think I Love You" and---I had totally forgotten this one---The Third Rail "Run Run Run."

The Mojos were on the play list of the 1st station I worked at (WICE in Providence) and I remember playing...and LOVING The Third Rail some time shortly after that.

Now if I could only find some of the other lost classics mentioned in this ever-expanding thread.

Oh dear, I have all of them. You can buy any of them online - unless you have a discount music store where you can get them new or used.

Here's another goodie, by The Maguire Sisters. Went to #1 in 1955, covering the Moonglows doo wopp

The Mojo Men were out of San Francisco, but one of the members was a Rochester guy named Jim Alaimo (cousin to Steve Alaimo who had some minor hits on ABC Paramount in the early 60s).

Jim later returned to Rochester in the late 60s.

Great song that was by the Mojo Men. Looking for Buffalo Springfield's Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It on CD. It's here on vinyl, but it's so crunchy it sounds like it came from WNIA. Also trying to locate 13th Floor Elevators You're Gonna Miss Me.

BTW, isn't the Nuggets anthology a Rhino production?

'...I could be totally wrong but I'm a....' As Zappa sang in Dancin' Fool. My offering for this thread tonight. Might as well include Zappa's hilarious Valley Girl too.

WICE. Cool (gah!) call letters. Long before "Ice, Ice, Baby" and "Cold As Ice." Isn't that where Jeff Kaye got his start after returning from the Air Force?

For Jim Pastrick..... Find a copy of Buffalo Springfield's First album on CD- that has your song Do I have to come right out and say it. Also, the original Nuggets was released on Sire...72 maybe?
Great thread for jogging the memory! How about Buffalo Springfield..On the Way Home as a stiff?

Great tune, excellent production(with the horns and all). A very personal Neil Young song(his resignation from the group) but sung by Richie Furay(who also sang Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It, which I first heard played on the old KB Sunday Night Spectacular). Following For What It's Worth, I believe BS had a lot of stiffs, despite the fact that the quality of their work was par excellence. I remember a kid in high school calling them "the american Beatles."

The Mojo Men..as the Kool-Aid guy would say...."OH YEAH !!!"

I'm on board with that one. Speaking of "on board", how about goin' on the....

Westbound #9 (Flaming Ember) circa 1970

Yabbut...it was originally on Sire. I'm pretty sure Rhino picked it up many years after it was first released.

Named in the 50s when they first signed on as the station that broadcast the Providence hockey team games...with their original studio in the arena where the team played.

Don Berns...you were a Music Director and so was I.  If we were to go back and take a look at some of the old playlists from those days we'd probably uncover enough "stiffs" to keep this board going for another 30 pages! WHAT "golden ears"?  Looking back, I'm amazed at some of the things we put on the air.

And if you don't have a hard copy of old playlists, just pop in an old aircheck and you're guaranteed volumes of stiffs!

I just listened to a backsell of "Remember the Nights" by the Motels (1983) and to add to Jim's Zappa collection, How about "Flakes" or "Dancin' Fool" from "Shiek Yerbouti", all of the above from the glorious early 80s.

Thanks for the V-8 "bonk on the head" straightening me out on the Sire-Rhino-Nuggets credit; also tahnks to justmebuk for the tip on "Do I Have To Come Right out And Say It" on Buffalo Springfield's first LP.

Tonight, I'd like to nominate Joe South's socio-political commentary, "Games People Play". Not quite a stiff as it went top 15 in 1969. But it's not likely to show up as one of the top-testing Classic Hits on a consultant's music list. Still, a pretty fine song by a talented singer-songriter.

Question for Mr. Berns:

If you were Music Director at KB, is it true that KB played Beverly Bremers Don't Say You Don't Remember pretty heavily? I spoke
with a few people that remember that song being a great
KB classic - played alot.

Anyways, how 'bout Ms. Bremers' Don't Say You Don't Remember?
You don't hear that around anymore....

Does anyone remember a song that was a takeoff on Ricky Nelson's Garden Party? It was called Country Gardens or something? Where Ricky names the various artists in the song Country Gardens would name all Country artists. For ex: Open up the closet door and out stepped Johnny Cash.....

Bill
