...Modern Rock! From a friend of mine that works at the station. Press release went out tonight.

I'd be disappointed (as usual), but at least it's one of the choices that would make some sense for the market.  If this happens, then CD101 will rail even more against corporate radio.  Until they're no longer around to rail, that is.

Better than some of the others they could have picked. This town has needed a real alternative/modern rock station for years. CD101 and The Blitz are at different ends of the spectrum. Maybe the new 106.7 (The Buzz?) will fill in that spot.

If it's modern rock I'm still betting on Radio 106.7, especially if it's somewhat pop-leaning like what CC is doing in Philly and some other markets (and also because that moniker would logically follow from the Television 106.7 stunt).  If this is what happens, the must be some coporate edict that all new CC Columbus formats are required to reflect one that was pioneered recently in Philadelphia.  That's what happened with 93.3.

what time can we expect this new station to finally flip to its real format? are we talk 12:01 am or starting sometime tomorrow?

Well it was still theme songs this morning when I checked. I thought I saw mention somewhere of "noon on Thursday"

What Columbus needs another rock or country station. No wonder our market share sucks. It's amazing that some people get excited over a similiar format that we already have here in this boring city. LMFAO ::)
That's why I enjoy my XM.

Pleased != excited. I liked CCC's Channel Z product and missed it when it left the airwaves. CD101 nor the Blitz do anything for me. Blitz plays too much metal and CD101 plays too much "fringe". 97.1 is too AC for my liking. So yes it's similar... but hopefully it's better. Competition makes everyone better.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: [EMBARGOED until Noon EDT, December 13, 2007]

MODERN ROCK STATION, RADIO 106.7, DEBUTS IN CENTRAL OHIO
New station added to Clear Channel Radio Columbus group

COLUMBUS – Modern rock has a new radio home in Columbus. Following a nearly two-week launch of television-theme song programming, Radio 106.7 has made its debut in central Ohio.

Clear Channel Radio Columbus today announced the newest station in the local radio group’s lineup will be Radio 106.7, a modern rock station promising a deep music playlist with minimal involvement of on-air talent and limited commercial advertising. The format was selected after research and focus groups with more than 800 central Ohio radio consumers, which suggested that the Columbus radio market was under-serving a key demographic of 25 to 44 year old listeners of rock music.

“It was time for Columbus modern rock fans to have their own station,” said John Crenshaw, director of programming. “Radio 106.7 will play new and established rock artists, in the longest music sweeps available in Columbus radio today, and we will even include music by some of Columbus’s best-known or soon-to-be-discovered local bands.” He says the playlist will include groups like U2, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers, Nirvana, Nickelback and the Dave Matthews Band in a sort of “pop-rock-alternative” combination.

The station currently is operating without on-air talent or commercials. Although the station will have personalities after the first of the year, plans are to significantly limit the amount of time personalities spend talking, with no liners and few on-air contests.

“We’re taking this station to our listeners on the Web as well,” said Crenshaw. “Using technology to reach our audience will be key to Radio 106.7’s success, and we expect to use our Web site as a critical connection to our listeners for the introduction of new bands, concert Webcasts and other social networking opportunities.” The station also is streaming at www.Radio1067.com.

In addition, Radio 106.7 will air a reduced number of commercials, with no more than eight minutes of commercial time each hour, and with several hours each day with less than six minutes of advertising each hour. Crenshaw says Radio 106.7 will have the fewest commercial minutes per hour of any station in the Columbus market. Traffic reports will air in morning and afternoon drive.

WMRN-FM 106.7 formerly had been broadcasting to the Marion, Ohio market at the 106.9 frequency, but was moved to the Columbus radio market in early November following approval by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The station will provide radio service to the City of Dublin and greater Columbus, with FCC-estimated primary service coverage to more than one million central Ohioans.

WMRN-FM is the seventh station in the Clear Channel Radio Columbus cluster, joining 92.3/WCOL, 93.3/WLZT, 97.9/WNCI, 105.7/WBWR, 610/WTVN and 1230/WYTS. (WMRN-FM’s call letters will change pending FCC approval.)

Title: Radio, Radio
Artist: Elvis Costello

lol... it was not a graceful switch. I have it recorded... I'll slice it down into a manageable MP3 and post online for those curious sometime later. The last song of tv106.7 didn't even get to finish, then 3-4 seconds of dead air... then into the new format.

Not one of the most exciting switches I have ever heard.

It's funny they mention the hole in the market, when they were the ones that created it back in 2000. They could have just kept Channel Z on 105.7 instead of their many Rock hybrid attempts over the past 7+ years.

It's what I was expecting when 106.7 first came to Dublin as Television 106.7 -- that we'd get CC's "Radio 106.7" somehere along the spectrum from the adult-leaning-modern Philly version to the the more Modern-AC version in Cincy.

The first hour sounded pretty much in the middle of the spectrum, and could even be called aggressive Modern AC (minus the 80’s Tom Petty or Simple Minds that Cincy plays).  But the second hour sounded much more like Philly -- adult-leaning modern rock.  Who knows where it will net out?  I’d prefer the former, but I’m betting on the second hour being more representative of what’s to come, especially since the press release called Radio 106.7 a Modern Rock.

While something like this didn't top my *personal* wishlist, it sounds pretty good and certainly makes some sense for a market that has has no viable Altenative, no AAA, and only a very current-based and gabby Hot AC (97.1).

It’s interesting to note that nearly all of the sample artists shown at www.radio1067.com get some play at Hot AC.

As for the transition from Television 106.7, yes it was underwhelming, but at least the last full theme played was from one of the best shows ever created, Green Acres.  Where else could you see a Clagwell washing machine go bonkers and literally chase the farmer Fred Ziffel, his wife Doris, and their son Arnold (a pig) out of the house?

BTW, I see that Yes.com is already monitoring the new station:

Much more Philly than Cincy. The first fourty minutes were very Triple A then the alternative cuts came in big time. Nu_Roo_2's comment is right on. Not exactly what I'm looking for either but it makes sense for the market and their cluster. CC can juke box this to the hilt and there's nothing else in town like it. 97.1 won't be hurt much because this seems to lean a lot more male than they do but if I was them I'd clean up the act quickly. You can send the black roses to the blitz and cd101. That's to bad because I always like it when the small guy wins over the big bad corporate but they have no one to blame but themselves. If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got and since neither has done anything to set themselves apart then here you go guys. One of them has an opportunity to fill another hole in this market so lets see who has the smarts to make the adjustments. I'm hope there is a Santa Claus who can bring a local organization new life in the new year.

Ho ho ho!

Yeah, let's all get excited about a hybrid station, a cross between two existing ones, whoopee. Me, I'd rather see something that turns the whole apple cart upside down instead of just slightly tilting it one way or the other, and XM614OhioState agrees. So Clear Channel has us following the lead of Cincinnati and Philadelphia, huh? There was once a time when Columbus led both of them, and in a very special way. Offense subscribers will know what I'm talking about.

Radio 106.7? "Radio" as the tag?? Generic, underwhelming, and throwaway. Revolutionary Radio, now that comes with quite a bit more ZING, don't you think?!!! And so do these -- four more "Yesterday's Top Secrets" Featured Artist pairings, revealed now because Radio 106.7 (splat) had the courage (and I know it took a lot) to play something during its first few hours from the second of each pair. Imagine how much more fun things would've been with these combinations and everything else that the station "For People Who Don't Like Radio"* encompasses! By the way, 35 match-ups now unveiled, 53 more to go:

Eddie Cochran + Elvis Costello
New Colony Six + New Order
Neil Young + Nirvana
Wilson Pickett + The Police

*Refresh your memory, go back to page 3 on this board, take twenty minutes, read my (ahem) rather lengthy initial post under the topic of this name, and then tell me with a straight face why it wouldn't work big-time, bigger than how well Modern Rock on your Radio 106.7 is going to work. Radio 106.7 -- geez, I still can't believe it. Yawn, yawn, and yawn. Bland, bland, and bland. Thud, thud, and thud. To say nothing of the limited vision of its programming.

Tim:

If you are so confident in your idea, why do you refuse to start your Revolution on non-comm radio or the Internet?

What did the other broadcast groups in town think of your proposed format?

I cannot say that I am shocked that you and the XM listener do not care for the new station after a half-dozen hours. I just can't figure out why you believe I owe you a frequency and a job.

Thanks,
JbC

PS: we call it "Radio" because we already did "Television," and "Toaster" just seemed silly.
