And the winning format is...

The imaging sucks though. For such a cool station, they're imaging and it boring and bland.

I'm sure that will change when they bring in commercial inventory and jocks but it sounds like it will be very under sold and modestly produced, and that is the right move. There is so much noise and hype on most stations it sends people away. I haven't thought about my iPod, XM, or CD101 since Thursday.

Annual charts usually run from late November to late November, I believe Nu Roo was looking at a Year To Date chart, which is different than the Year End chart.

Maybe that's it.  FWIW, here's what I was looking at.  It's got 2007 year-to-date top-ten charts for just about everything (clean) you can imagine.  BTW, Columbus showed up in a couple of the of market rankings:  top ten for dvd-buying and top ten for reading/posting to blogs.  The top albums list is on page 6.

Now that I've had a few more hours to listen to 106.7, and to try and get over my initial disappointment and bitterness about the format selection, I realize a couple of things that have cheered me up a little.

First, I've complained in the past about the lack of research done by our broadcast companies, but in this case Clear Channel apparently took some sort of survey, and its findings confirmed what I have been telling program directors and general managers for years -- that the Central Ohio radio industry was underserving a large segment of our area's rock and roll fans. None of these executives believed me then. Maybe they believe me now.

Secondly, when you think about it, our new station's "pop-rock-alternative combination" (as described by John Crenshaw to the Dispatch) is a phrase that sounds eerily similar to the "oldies-classic rock-alternative combination" that I have been touting! He and 106.7 also seem to be going with my "non-hit" philosophy, as I know that the station has played close to a dozen different songs by bands like Nirvana and U2 so far, and aren't limiting themselves to the same two or three tunes by each group that other stations have played to death.

So let's see, they've got a similarly-worded blend to mine, they've got a 30-year chunk of music that has a 15-year overlap with my 30-year chunk, and they've got my same freewheeling "lots-of-songs-by-lots-of-bands" attitude. Oh well, look at the bright side, Tim -- at least they didn't steal your "Spirit 106.7" moniker and its attendant slogans. Man, if that had happened, I would've REALLY been disappointed and bitter. And probably seen them in court.

In spite of all of these similarities, it's still a classic case of so close and yet so far. Clear Channel is using my ideas, but they're still not getting it right. Any station that would like to get it right, please feel free to contact me. I'd contact you, but let's face it -- the ball's been in your court for some time now!

Man dude, get over yourself. One *might* be inclined to buy into your "Clear Channel is stealing from me" claim if maybe this station didn't so closely resemble the Philly version of Radio 104.5. So did you take your format out to Philly and pitch it there too and they stole your idea too? Or maybe you just spoke out about something that everyone has known since Channel Z went off the air. I believe Chris (on this board) was the one who ran bringbackchannelz.com and you don't see him claiming victory or crying foul over CC finally refilling the void they left in the market.

Like JbC said, if your idea is that much better, get it on the air yourself or wait patiently by the phone until some other PD sees it as the better product and gives you a job. Until then... give.it.a.rest.

Sheesh.

I was involved in getting a live stream online for bringbackchannelz.com, but moved on to my own online radio ventures shortly after. Channel Z was not perfect by any means, but it was a format that was popular in Columbus and was never given a chance with the new downtown 105.7 signal. I knew I had a playlist and idea that could work, and guess what? I've had audiences in the thousands and I am being paid for my efforts. Get up or shut up is how I felt about it. As for 106.7, I guess we'll have to wait and see. There is clear potential as long as they don't limit it to 500 or 600 songs. In the modern rock format, as broad of a term that is, playing purely back to back hits isn't everything.

Wow... very cool someone remembers Bringbackchannelz.com. I was just out of high school when Z switched formats and I launched that site to protest. Apparently, I thought I could tackle Clear Channel through the power of internet petitions. ::) As Chris said above, he did the entire Channel Z web stream (thanks again man!). And special thanks to Clear Channel for not suing me for using their logo, bumpers, and other 105.7 stuff on that site without their permission. I doubt it fell under fair use and I was 18 at the time, what did I know/care?

Also pretty cool that CC brought the pop/rock/alt format back. I'd be interested to hear as to why they didn't resurrect the 'Z' brand with WMRN. I assume it's either because of the target demographic differences between the old ZAZ (18-34) and the current MRN (25-44) or because CC corporate wants to create "national format brands"? I guess, to me, "Radio 106.7" just seems generic, doesn't really describe the product, and doesn't convey a competitive image against similar demo station names like "The Blitz" and "CD101". Plus, "Radio 106.7" shares a similar identifier with non-comm/alternative/Christian, "Radio U, 88.7" which while a hash in the ratings, could cause image confusion because they probably share some crossover artists and they've got billboards around town too. But that stuff isn't my job so whatever... Cool station regardless. I've actually been listening to the radio again.

Dude. Don't you think that while one caveman was inventing the wheel, another caveman a million miles away was
inventing the same thing? Even if you had the idea before CC (doubtful), you sound like a kid who just dropped his ice cream cone. My ideas are used and re-used, on a daily basis, on morning shows across the country - most I don't get paid for. Did no one tell you? There are no new ideas; only different versions and modifications of the original.

Bitter, party of one, your table is ready.

You mean someone already invented the wheel ?? Crap! There's 15 years of research I'll never get back. How about a thingy to open pop bottles? Has anyone done that yet?
