ANDY FURMAN: WHA'HOPPEN?

I have missed Andy on WLW's air of late. Now I get a copy of a memo via e-mail saying he is no longer with WLW. Can someone enlighten me on this one?

And I can imagine Cumulus may be stereofying him in the time it takes for his noncompete to expire?

Cary, 700 took his name off their website as of today. I saw it on there last night for a fact, and now it's gone. Something official must have gone down today.

No mention of him on their website is a good sign He is gone at least from WLW. I'm wondering if Furman could show up on 965 as well. Hmmm

WLW fires Furman
BY JOHN KIESEWETTER | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
WLW-AM “SportsTalk” host Andy Furman was fired today, said his attorney, Janet Abaray.

In a note sent to staffers today, Darryl Parks, the station’s AM operations director, said that “Andy Furman is no longer with 700 WLW.”

Furman was suspended with pay on Oct. 13 for calling Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh a “racist” on the Oct. 6 “SportsTalk” show. The comments came a day after Furman had ripped the Bengals player on the air after he missed a paid appearance on “SportsTalk”, a weekly talk show, during the team’s bye week.

Furman could not be reached for comment

I never cared for Andy and his tendency to stir up crap rather than talk sports. So I'm not sorry to see him go. But I've pointed out before that it is hypocritical when management puts people like that on the air, encourages them to be outrageous, and then fires them when they finally go too far. Opie and Anthony, Greaseman, etc..... The list goes on and on. Management feigns concern and surprise when the very personalities they encouraged to be outrageous in the name of ratings and revenue embarrass the station. I say management should share some of the blame in these situations too.

Gee whiz. Golly. Think Cutler could be next? (Wish, wish)

I enjoyed Andy very much. I hate to see him go and at this point, until I hear the facts, I am in his corner. I also agree that the Cutler should be gone. He's the most annoying person to listen to in the whole group, unless you enjoy hearing someone asking and answering his own questions.

This Kieswetter/Curnutte/Enquirer story seems to have the most info I could find on the actual incident (date is unknown):

Furman silent on, off the air
Radio host stuck in controversy over remarks
BY JOHN KIESEWETTER AND MARK CURNUTTE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITERS

Andy Furman, a WLW-AM radio host, has been suspended for on-air comments he made about Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Darryl Parks, operations manager for Clear Channel's four AM stations here, refused to confirm or deny that Furman was suspended. Three phone messages for WLW-AM general manager Karrie Sudbrack Thursday were not returned.

Yup....when I hear Cutler's voice, I reach for the button. What I dislike about Cutler is he sounds like he's trying to be Bob Trumpy. He ain't no Bob Trumpy. It's another CC "instigate and inflame the listener into calling". I find that troublesome and poor programming. Respect the listened a little bit.

As for the Furman issue, my gut says it's not solely about the alleged T.J. incident. I agree with the gentleman in today's Enquirer article. CC is on the block. I also agree that Cunningham has gone over the line at times too. Is there a happy median? Yes. CC pulled Furman off the air for a few weeks. (sidenote: doesn't Furman take vacation after the end of Reds season usually?) So, CC "punished" and showed attrition to the issue. A lawsuit from the alleged incident would do nothing, outside of a quiet confidential settlement.

What really happened? An alleged firing. (is there a press release on official CC letterhead from corporate?) Everyone is talking WLW. What election? - WLW gets Front Page Headline in the Cincinnati Enquirer. A gimmick? If this is a gimmick...I think this one will backfire. If this is a gimmick, the trust factor of the braintrust in Kenwood/San Antonio will have gone down the drain.

Just an opinion.

I've met Andy a few times and I'm sorry to see him fired. He's a nice guy. Maybe 96.5 or WMOH will pick him up. Since Andy's a well-known and popular local radio personality, either station would see ratings through the roof if he went there.

I sure hope you're right. Andy is a nice guy away from the schtick on the air. It would be nice to hear him on the air in this market again. I would listen.

TV's Cross just said T.J. Houshmandzadeh made a comment about an official's "lineage!"

Does Furman get his job back??!??!??!??

KJCB: The references are to ALAN Cutler, a WLW sports talk host. Jim's the best (when he's not being coached to puke as on some stations/networks). We were thrilled to have him as our VO at WSPD.

Ya get what ya get with the Cut'man. As for Jim Cutler, his promos and liners are nothing less than legendary, combined with the talent in that imaging office in Kenwood. They should be working for Jon Stewart, but they love Cincinnati apparently.

Does this mean they take the Andy Furman sandwich off the menu at Izzys???
