ANDY FURMAN: WHA'HOPPEN?

I hated the Andy Furman sandwhich, why include the fish? Cary: You're thinking of a Cutler immitator. Cutler (Jim) never pukes, there are guys who immitate him who do puke and sometimes I have to listen hard to know if it's Jim, the main puker is on both NBC and CNN that sound very much like Cutler but has a smiley-puke in his voice. Brian (?) something. The cool spots Cutler and Scott Stanley do are also heard on Sirius and XM recently has some. I no longer have Sat radio in the car anymore and miss it!

ee: Been working with Jim Cutler off and on since 1986 when he was our supplier of classic rock montages at WKLX Rochester. He does indeed get a little pukey...on just about everything I hear him do for the ESPN affiliate in Columbus, and on a fair amount of the WLW and WTAM stuff, I'm afraid. I'm sure he is coached to do that. He was our main voice guy at WSPD, and I pulled a lot of stuff off of that station that had that all-asskicker attitude read right after I got there in 1999. He gives you what you ask for; that is the mark of a great VO artist. We asked for "clean" reads and he did it...perfectly.

Just a personal thing with me, I guess, but in a newsradio environment, I hear that "attitude" read as puking. In sports, and in comedic work, it has a place. Just my 0.02 worth.

Haven't been to Izzy's in a while (but I suspect I'll be dropping by the one at Forest Park in the near future). Just what IS on the Furman sandwich?

And I agree...Scott Stanley and that crew are all wizards. The best.

Cary, attitude is not puking. Your opinion or not, you are using the wrong term. I know the guy extremely well and he's not only an amazing person, he's great. Jim is at least on HBO, ESPN, Nickelodeon, Discovery and WLW are different reads all from one guy. "Attitude" came to newstalk once real pukers got into it. Have you heard the guy at the top hour on WTOP and WCBS? That's puking. The other voice on LW, Brian Janes, has 20x more of a sing-songly affected read then what you have identified as puking. Paul Turner tortures words to the 'enth degree on CNN: "This is Lou Dobbs Moneyliiiiiiiiiiiiine" but you call the ESPN stuff pukey? I call that attitude and for people who aren't old-school, it's good attitude. So what is pukey? Pukey is the top hour ID at WTOP or WCBS hands down. I think we take WLW for granted because it's there every day. No one does great newstalk creative like they do, and the promos and the promo reads are perfect. I'll send your words to Jim and ask him to come up here and comment, although he'll probably chuckle.

In light of the whole racist issue being brought to lite by the Michael Richards meltdown, I assume the truth lies within the realm of what is happening today. Which begs me to pose the question. Why is it ok for TJ hossh what's is ass (is he one of the Bengals not in jail for something) to call Furman a "punk ass white boy"?
And why is it ok for Michael Vick to give all of Atlanta the finger without seeking medical counseling?

If WLW wants to keep listeners then guys like Furman and Cunningham will be their guys (not that I like listening to them all the time) But, can any of us stand a Daryl Parks and Cutler line up five days a week. They are top 40 jocks without music... I'm glad Furman got on Hush buckets ass...that's not racist that's demanding respect from punk ass (not black/ not white) football players who keep getting into trouble and having no penalty. I'm glad I'm a Browns fan, we may not win but after the season we can visit our players outside Prison!

Methinks you overexaggerate. And how about those Browns players fighting each other on the sidelines on TV? Now there's class for ya. I'm not normally the type to rub it in, but since your somewhat supercilious post seems to be asking for it:

Bengals 30 - Browns 0.

Bengals winners of the last five Bengals-Browns matchups and six of the last eight.

Bengals now lead the Battle of Ohio series 34-33.

Super Bowls -- Bengals 2, Browns 0.

Browns 1996-1998 -- DOA.

Sorry. I couldn't resist. Peace. ;)

Weren't the Browns' fans the ones who tore up the stadium a few years back when Modell moved the team to Baltimore? 8)

More On Puking Trivia...

If you use the back of your throat to overshape what you're saying, adding pressure to your facial muscles...that's puking. There are many stylistic derivatives (e.g.: smiling nasal pukers, as were rampant in the 60s, the guys we 70s jocks love to make fun of, "Johnny WEST, on Greater New York's BIG NINETY!"). Those VO guys you point out on PHT are indeed a lot worse than what a pro like Jim Cutler does with the style.
