Andy Furman

Does anyone see Andy Furman working in the Cincinnati Market again? Seems like he would be finished here unless he would end up back at WLW. I can't see WLW hiring him back despite some of the rumors about him replacing Gary Burbank. Maybe TV sports anchor?

I love Andy and would like to see him land on his feet, but I think the repeated pot shots at his former employer from the Supertalk studio might present a problem. That, and the fact that CC Cincinnati is feeding current staff into the compost heap, are not good signs for future employment in Kenwood.

Andy's preferred method of doing sports talk would fit well within a dedicated show, but I don't think a sports anchor role would work as well for him - too limited. It doesn't have the air of guys sitting at the corner bar discussing stats and scores, which is his forte. Still, I wish him the best, because it sucks to be looking for a gig, and the man is talented.

Told ya so.

Being new to Cincy when Furman was fired from WLW last year, I expressed surprise that all the attention the "prominent" sportstalker was receiving. Having lived and worked in many markets, Furman seemed very average to me at best. Not horrible, just okay. However, I was shouted down about his supposed dominance on WLW--all without numbers to back it up, of course. He supposedly would do the same for Supertalk.

Well, a year later Furman made absolutely no appreciable impact on 96.5. He's now gone and the station flipped.

Was this Furman's fault? No, but it does show how Furman's prominence was built by being on a big stick, not his overwhelming talent. Furman does seem like a decent guy and I wish him well, but two monkeys and a banjo would get respectable ratings on a stick like WLW...

'nuff said...

I think the "big stick" theory would go for most talkers. I know Rush started on many pea shooters early in his career, but now is mostly on big AM sticks or a decent FM if CC has moved him off the big AM competitive stick. Could he survive if moved onto a smaller stick with the signal limitations that many second tier talkers are forced to contend? Would he survive with the same large audience if he was limited to the signals of Salem or Air America? 10 or 15 years ago, absolutely. Today, I doubt it.

Who knows maybe Bonneville would flip one of it's stations 94.9 or 97.3 to a Full Service news/talker with Furman as the sports show. They do have success in a few cities and know how to do the format right unlike Cumulus.

Indy's longtime AM talker WIBC is going to FM in January, KTAR Phoenix AZ is a successful FM talker owned by Bonneville that made the switch to FM.

I heard Furhman back on 96.5! His old 'Sport Clips' & 'Stronghold Storage' commercials were playing. Kinda a kick in the 'nads do ya think? I know, they are honoring their sales commitments!

Don't forget WPGB in Pittsburgh, WWSC-FM in Charleston, SC, WTKS-FM in Orlando, WWTN in Nashville. I'd certainly like to know how WBUV in Biloxi-Gulfport is doing. Even though it's in Mississippi, a lot of the locals tune in to WWL from New Orleans.

Just not in this one I guess.
fooo

If Clear Channel liquidated one of their FMs to turn it into WLW-FM, I guess it would technically be successful.

I have often wondered why they have not done that with 94.1. Seems some of the other talkers are doing it and they could keep their regular line up on 94.1 when 700 was doing baseball and other sports.
