Andy Roth: Place Your Bets

Schopp may prove to be the most difficult employee for whoever the new boss turns out to be.

Wenger and Schopp likely won't clash for now, but Andy's replacement may have his or her work cut out for them if Mike decides he is not a fan of the new boss.

Mensa Mike may have his work cut out for him if his new boss decides he's not a fan. They're likely to hire somebody with sports programming experience who just might have a few former employees who already fit his vision of what real sports talk should sound like.

I'll be interested to see how Andy Roth does with a new sports station that doesn't have a major league team already on the roster. I'm sure that CBS made him some big promises, but his track record during the Sabres off-season can't even be described as average.

Great sports stations, ironically, don't depend on intensive sportstalk exclusively. The better ones do know how to broaden the pool of subject matter. Mike might actually be even more appropriate than some other hosts in that environment.

Great sports stations don't depend on unprofessional giant egos (Schopp, Hamilton) who openly say every week during football season that they hate discussing their main product either, and pride themselves on not following sports.

Also, Schopp isn't going anywhere.

Schopp isn't leaving the station, but he may be leaving his timeslot.

Chatter amongst the Entercom Buffalo sales and engineering employees is that it is going to be Schopp and Simon in AM drive with Bauch producing and then White and Parker in PM drive with Dan Fisher producing.

Parker may finally drop his "The Bulldog" moniker as part of the scheduling changes.

Colin Cowherd is safe for now for 10 am to noon but there's always the possibility of that time slot going local if they can sell the spots to make it worth their while to have a dedicated producer sitting in the studio for that two hours and pay for a phone screener.

Wenger and Reid may dictate the changes to whoever takes Roth's place, someone who may not even be hired until the fall once we are well into the football season.

Date for the changes to occur? I'm guess the day after Labor Day, just in time for the NFL season and Sabres training camp.

Geeeez......what does it say about me, that I like Schopp & Hamilton the best on 'GR!

Fascinating. The better move would be teaming White with Schopp in PM drive and Parker moving to morning drive with Simon. The studio might have to be enlarged to accommodate White and Schopp's enormous egos, but it would make for (more) entertaining radio. Posters here have commented about Schopp's apparent ennui; perhaps he'd perk up if he had to duel with "Always Right Jeremy White."

How 'bout George? Suddenly, he's coming up with a lot "inside info" on what's going on at the Entercom cluster. Good work, George!

SPORTS RADIO 92.3 THE FAN, CLEVELAND’S FIRST AND ONLY FM SPORTS STATION, MAKES ITS DEBUT ON MONDAY, AUG. 29

Andy Roth Named as Program Director

Beginning on Monday, Aug. 29, Cleveland sports fans will have a bold new choice for news and information about their favorite sports teams. Sports Radio 92.3 The Fan (WKRK-FM) will feature locally produced programs hosted by familiar Cleveland voices, along with headline updates every 20 minutes and a full lineup of NFL and college football play-by-play coverage. The station will be available on-air, on-line at www.923TheFan.com and via the Radio.com application for a variety of mobile devices.

Additionally, Andy Roth has been named as Program Director of the CBS RADIO station. He joins 92.3 The Fan from Buffalo’s WGR, and also has experience at legendary sports properties WFAN in New York and WIP in Philadelphia.

Roth said, “What we are launching is literally a radio station for ‘The Fan.’ For Clevelanders who live and breathe sports 24/7 this will be the place to get the best insight, most in-depth coverage and a well-rounded balance of listener participation all presented in an entertaining forum.”

Nationally-known talent Kevin Kiley will team up with Cleveland’s own Chuck Booms weekday mornings from 6:00-10:00AM for the area’s only local morning drive sports-talk show. Kiley & Booms previously co-hosted a national show on the Fox Sports Radio Network. Adam “The Bull”, formerly of WFAN in New York, will fill the afternoon drive time slot from 3:00-7:00PM. The remainder of The Fan lineup will be announced at a later date.

92.3 The Fan will also be the new home for Westwood One’s coverage of the NFL including all but one of the national football broadcasts on Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights; and Big 10 football. Additional programming will include postgame shows immediately following all the local professional football, basketball and baseball games, as well as appearances by players, coaches, and media experts.

Senior Vice President/Market Manager, CBS RADIO Cleveland Tom Herschel added, “CBS RADIO is the leader when it comes to the all-sports format. Having the pioneering station (WFAN) among our portfolio along with a number of new entrants to the FM dial in major markets across the country we are confident we know what it takes to make this move a success in Cleveland.”

In addition to WKRK-FM in Cleveland, CBS RADIO owns and operates all-sports stations in 14 other markets, including seven of the Top 10 markets, which reach more than 3.5 million Men 25-54 each week (Arbitron, Fall 2010 National Database):

New York (WFAN-AM) Washington, D.C. (WJFK-FM) Charlotte (WFNZ-AM)
Chicago (WSCR-AM) Boston (WBZ-FM) Pittsburgh (KDKA-FM)
Dallas (KRLD-FM) Detroit (WXYT-AM/FM) Riverside (KVFG-FM)
Houston (KILT-AM) Tampa (WQYK-AM) Sacramento (KHTK-AM)
Philadelphia (WIP-AM) Baltimore (WJZ-FM/WJZ-AM)

Hahahahaha. "All sports, all the time" again, I see. Good luck with that, Cleveland.

Schopp makes the move to Cleveland to work 10 am to 3 pm shift?

Remember, Mike and Andy are VERY tight.

Just a thought.......

Just for playing our game, you'll go home with fabulous parting gifts. Tell him what he's won, Johnny! "OMW gets a two night stay at the not quite luxurious but wonderfully notorious Sweaty Palms Motor Inn, Niagara Falls Boulevard, Tonawanda! A complimentary weekend pass to all shows at the Pig Palace, somewhere in Sloan, not far from home, featuring the Run of the Mill Bar Band, where every night is ladies night! A one hundred dollar gift certificate to Sattler's 9-9-8 Broadway! Annnnnd a set of American Tourister Luggage from Spiegel, Chicago, Illinois, 6-0-6-0-9!"

Jim, I think I've actually stayed at the Sweaty Palms Inn. Or maybe it was a Quality Inn. :D Same thing. Pretty sure it was on NF Blvd!

No, Vic is working for the Cleveland Browns directly, and their radio show is heard(/time bought from) the incumbent sports station in the market, ESPN 850 WKNR.

Have you ever listened to the incumbent sports station in town, WKNR/850? Possibly the worst-run "all sports" station East of the Mississippi. :p

Anyone listen to the new all sports station in Cleveland yet? How does the morning show sound?

I'm not really a "Kiley and Booms" fan, per se, so it'll take me a while to catch up with them (and I don't listen to AMD generally).

The early star of "The Fan" appears to be afternoon driver "Adam the Bull", who is paired with former Ohio State Buckeye Dustin Fox.

One note on-topic for this thread...it appears Andy Roth hired no one from either WGR or Entercom Buffalo.

One Buffalo radio type, "The Edge" afternoon assistant producer Josh Potter, was hired to co-produce K&B...but IIRC, Citadel-to-become-Cumulus owns WEDG. As far as I know, he brought in no one from his former station or cluster.

So no, no "Schrop and Bulldog" in CLE.

I'm somewhat surprised that none of the younger WGR producers/sports update guys/weekend hosts didn't dial Andy up and land some type of work in Cleveland.

I'm thinking of Dave Buchanan (really good work on the Sunday morning NASCAR show) and Dan Cave and Jeremy Noeseon in particular. I'm sure there are a few others that I can't think of right now that would be the type who would live home in search of more work and possibly a more prominent role, even if it means doing sports updates on the overnight shifts and Saturday and Sunday morning hosting duties.

Most new PD's don't want to come off as thoughtless. You don't show up on a new scene and immediately start replacing people. Even if that is your intention, you have to give the appearance of thoughtful consideration to everyone currently on staff there, THEN you start chopping off heads and bringing in your buddies.
