Now, this might upset some true radio purists and I understand that......
I use the analogy of McDonald's. The culture purist would believe that McDonald's exist to bring smiles to children's faces and warm feelings in their bellies while enjoying their hamburger of McNuggets. ahhhh..warm fuzzy feelings.
The reality is, McDonald's wants that feeling to be out there so they can sell a lot of food and make a lot of money.
The dream or vision that radio exists to get people through their workday and put smiles on their faces and entertian children in the care are gone. GONE!!!!
Radio exists to make money. Mr Angotti is a business man. Mr Angotti is in the business of making money and he is making a lot of it for him and his investors.
I know no one, including myself, likes to believe that. But it's true. Yes, the old Modern Rock 95.7 The Rocket was the highest rated "alternative" station in the country, people loved it. It sounded top notch. But it didn't make any money. If a TV show is "critically acclaimed" but not making any money it is GONE!!!.
It is important to realize that in this day and age, very few radio listeners are listening for personality. They are listening as a background to their day. They are channel flippers, just like I am. It is unfortunate, but stations can all go sattelite and STILL make money.
To understand what goes on at AMP, you must understand Art Angotti. Mr Angotti is an investment banker by trade. His investors give him money to use wisely and show a profit and that's what he does. The investors don't care about station vehicles and the importance of image and representing yourself as a broadcast professional etc..... they care about the bottom line. it is THEIR money. ANd their bottom line is good.
I am sure it is frustrating for AMP South Bend to lose its promotion budget because AMP Bloomington owes too much to the electric company, but it is business.
It took me along time and alot of blood, sweat, and tears to realize that radio IS a business , not entertainment.
And whether I agree, you agree, or whoever agrees with how Mr Angotti runs it, it is his/investor's money and they are making a lot of it. His stations still bill. They are still on the air. And we are still listening to them and enjoying them and spending our free time analyzing them.
God bless America and in the immortal words of Billy Cunningham, God Bless STEINBERG'S!!!!
