Angotti Sr

Now, this might upset some true radio purists and I understand that......

I use the analogy of McDonald's. The culture purist would believe that McDonald's exist to bring smiles to children's faces and warm feelings in their bellies while enjoying their hamburger of McNuggets. ahhhh..warm fuzzy feelings.

The reality is, McDonald's wants that feeling to be out there so they can sell a lot of food and make a lot of money.

The dream or vision that radio exists to get people through their workday and put smiles on their faces and entertian children in the care are gone. GONE!!!!

Radio exists to make money. Mr Angotti is a business man. Mr Angotti is in the business of making money and he is making a lot of it for him and his investors.

I know no one, including myself, likes to believe that. But it's true. Yes, the old Modern Rock 95.7 The Rocket was the highest rated "alternative" station in the country, people loved it. It sounded top notch. But it didn't make any money. If a TV show is "critically acclaimed" but not making any money it is GONE!!!.

It is important to realize that in this day and age, very few radio listeners are listening for personality. They are listening as a background to their day. They are channel flippers, just like I am. It is unfortunate, but stations can all go sattelite and STILL make money.

To understand what goes on at AMP, you must understand Art Angotti. Mr Angotti is an investment banker by trade. His investors give him money to use wisely and show a profit and that's what he does. The investors don't care about station vehicles and the importance of image and representing yourself as a broadcast professional etc..... they care about the bottom line. it is THEIR money. ANd their bottom line is good.

I am sure it is frustrating for AMP South Bend to lose its promotion budget because AMP Bloomington owes too much to the electric company, but it is business.

It took me along time and alot of blood, sweat, and tears to realize that radio IS a business , not entertainment.

And whether I agree, you agree, or whoever agrees with how Mr Angotti runs it, it is his/investor's money and they are making a lot of it. His stations still bill. They are still on the air. And we are still listening to them and enjoying them and spending our free time analyzing them.

God bless America and in the immortal words of Billy Cunningham, God Bless STEINBERG'S!!!!

Arthur Angotti is Satan himself! Run for the hells or your soul will be clamed by the Dark Lord of Radio! Is their any chance that well escape from his Sinister Broadcasting Cluches I ask??? Save yourselfs from the AMP Money Grubber Croozers! add that all up on your ticker tapes! or I should may be say broken record tickers.

Oh my I had to read the littleolme post twice and each time I had this insatiable urge to touch myself. Dude I'll agee that you do get some of it but ya ain't gettin' it all. Sure you and yer cocktail buddies know how to count beans but you have got to consistanly position yourself in the market. Do you understand that position? GIDDY-UP!

His stations still bill.

Please tell me how "The Wolf" is making any money whatsoever?

Im guessing youre right that theyre not. From what Ive heard the rates of all three of the stations AMP lafayette are really really low and they practically give away there advertising time. What else can you do with toiletstyle ratings like they have.

and by that way, who on earth is 'enjoying their stations' not any one that I know of!

Actually, McDonalds is in the real estate business..... Investing in property and leasing it to franchisees. On top of that, they sell food and make some money there too.

BTW.......Are they keeping that basement bathroom clean at B97? That is a great place to read the newspaper.

That may be true but Artistic makes nothing nearly as good as the Mcchicken sandwich. They could only dream of that.

From what ive heard its an even better place to get yankedelic to some Nelly musics.

But don't better ratings mean better revenue and more money? So they should care a little about the sound of their stations in order to get good ratings.

Wow, you all are vicious! Good stuff here. I dont know what the rates are at AMP, but I know that you can buy WKOA and WASK for less than 8 dollars!

By reading your responses, I note that my point is made. And at the end of the day, we must all remember....Who is a partner in a group that owns some ten radio stations or so? You? Me? the guy at the gas station? Nope, Art Angotti. Agree or disagree all you want......when it comes to business decisions, they are his to make and he does them pretty well.

You can buy WASK and WKOA spots at 8 dollars apiece when the time is right, but the majority of the year straight off the rate card, you'll be paying anywhere from $25-$35 a spot for good dayparts like mornings and afternoons.

When they aren't running some sort of "inventory reduction sale", you're talking about $12-$15 spots at night and on the weekends.
The lowest of the low when the spots are "on sale" still run about $11 or $12 apiece with the wide rotators.

FYI

This reminds me of the WKRP episode where Mother Carlson is changing the station from rock to all news, just after they were #6 in the book. Here reasoning was so convulted that a stoned Johnny Fever understood it.
(For you whippersnappers: The station was making money, which was against the purpose of the station in the Carlson Industries big picture)

You cannot hire someone and tell them to a great job, and then stab them in the back when they do! Hire them, letting them know that they are there to play commericals mainly, and do what Art says without question. I do believe when Art has to hire from Prestonsburg, KY, the hiring pool is getting smaller. Maybe then things will change, but not for a while :(

Well, just from reading on here about the old PD getting fired (and going on to promote instead of getting another gig) maybe he was the cause of the ratings? Or are you saying that the devil himself, told him what to do?
As for the new guy, being from KY.......I have to wonder where all of you started out? Chicago? New York? Bloomington, IL????? I find that there is a lot of condescending attitude here about anyone that goes to work for AMP. I know for me, if it was a paycheck and a chance to get a foothold into the business I probably would go to work for summit!
Ah, the days of being in radio to have fun, sadly have passed us by. When I was younger and didnt have to put food on the table I had fun! NJow, it is just a job.

They are his decisions to make, why do you think he makes them pretty well?

From a behind the scenes standpoint, possibly. However, he loses all credibility with listeners and industry watchers alike when the country and classic rock stations flip-flop frequencies in Lafayette TWICE in a year's time and when Fort Wayne's 106.3 segues through five different formats and does a hard flip back to soft AC then to oldies all within a 18 month period.

Not vicous just speaking wellknown truth of the ages! Were not playing cops and robbers and injuns here, were talking about the raydeeo biz and some of these folks are pretty wellknown to talk about it too dont you forget! Im not even joking when I say thats true so dont you misunderstand me I know that when randyjones or Vizzaman or even Dam Summers is on those spots arent going for chumps sorry change right? Book it!

IT MAY BE A BUSINESS, BUT FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE BANKERS SHOULD NEVER RUN A BUSINESS, THEY ARE TO INTERESTED IN THE BOTTOM LINE, MONEY...YOU HAVE TO SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY, AND IF YOU DON'T YOU WON'T MAKE ANY MONEY, IF YOUR RATINGS ARE LOW, NO ONE WILL ADVERTISE ON YOUR STATION OR IF THEY DO THEY WILL GET THE LOWEST RATES POSSIBLE.

SOME DAY HE WILL LEARN HOW TO TREAT PEOPLE, I WONDER HOW HE CAN SLEEP AT NIGHT, MAYBE HE DOESN'T CARE, THAT'S IT HE DOESN'T CARE I AM SURE HE HAS RUINED LIVES BY LETTING SO MANY PEOPLE GO WITHOUT ANY NOTICE, I KNOW OTHER STATIONS DO IT, BUT I THINK HE HOLDS THE RECORD.

Typing in all capitals letters is a big internet manners NO NO friend. Hit that caps lock button and say your prayers for more friendly service!

I've known people who've worked for Angotti in Bloomington and Lafayette. With the advent of computers, voice tracking, satellite and more, it's become easier to become a revolving door. One of my friend's observation is that AMP takes a look at the sales goals and the actual sales total throughout the year. When the sales staff hasn't done their job and it looks like the budget for the year will not be made, then usually, one of the programming staff gets the ax. It's their stations. Does it make me happy when this happens?
No. But the point is, unless you have the money to buy these stations from AMP, this will pretty much continue to be the mode of operation.

There is something to be said about good service... and tonight McDonald's service sucked. I love this board...
