another bloodbath at Sandusky

This is a surprise. KIXI/KWJZ are sold as a combo and do pretty well on the sales side. The billing is down 25%, but the entire market is off 25%.

Sorry, but KIXI and KWJZ are not, nor have they ever been sold as a combo. Ironicly its KQMV/KIXI, KKNW/KWJZ, and KRWM as far as sales go at Sandusky.

Oldies, The Brew, AMP?

Well it will be neither "Brew" or "AMP" as these are BRAND names used by Clear Channel and CBS. Nothing like the "MOViN Situation" where multiple owners licence the name.

I may not know programming but I work at a rep firm in sales and for the last six months KWJZ has been sold combo with KIXI because its a better fit. Last year KQMV and KIXI were a combo. KIXI is also used to bring in rate for KRWM from time to time.

I realize the Amp name and Brew name are CBS and Clear Channel, yet you can do the same music approach without using the name. For example JACK is a brand but is called Charlie, Bill, Sam etc. The point is the apparent openings are Oldies, Music Centric Mainstream CHR and an 80's based Classic Rock that really rocks. The bigger point is that I don't believe Sandusky would make more money in any of these than they do with KWJZ.

Again, am not in programming but from a sales point of view it doesn't make sense.

This thread is a yawner now. Whether KWJZ should stay jazz or go oldies is like asking which turd is bigger in the bowl. It's still a turd :) The only lady kickin butt in Seattle is Red and she is number one 18-34 and top 5 25-54 at the ole END!!!

One of the reasons Jack is Jack is because it's sold as a package from Sparknet Communications (another reason is the jockless approach, but that's a different thread). Can another group put a Charlie, Bill or Sam on the air? Sure, but for other reasons they are unlikely to get it off the ground properly.

Crow brought up bringing back KBSG. I doubt putting the money into trying to pull those folks from KJR-FM would be either valuable or affordable. Say what you want about KJR-FM and their blandness, they're doing pretty damn well right now. And a KBSG reincarnation would likely only bring back (again, only after a lot of $$$ spent), 50+ numbers.

My first thought was that letting those guys go was a prelude to a format change, especially given the demise of Jazz stations around the country. But I don't think Sandusky has the money or patience right now to change a format right now. Could be wrong, but in this economic climate, it's unlikely.

I'm with you, AQH. The only thing that makes sense is to drift away from the "jazz" just a little, and move towards a rhythmically-based slightly urban vocal format. In point of fact, Sandusky dropped the 'jazz" last year (from their logo) and now they are just "Smooth". They would be smart to not mess up what they've got but simply to evolve.

Sorry to once again rain on everyones parade here, but as has been discussed countless times by those in the industry with those, shall I correctly say- not in the industry; I seriously doubt anyone will be changing formats any time soon. It's simply too expensive in this economic environment. For those of you who either don't know, or don't want to listen.. Changing formats in a major market can cost millions of dollars. Millions of dollars that few have right now with a suppressed advertising climate. Changing format is far more than just hiring some new air talent and buying a music library.

Who are you including when you say "we"? Who appointed you the RI board police?

Re: "urban vocals"

The last thing I want to hear is urban vocals. A big draw of instrumental jazz is to get away from suck up love songs and whoa is me lost at love songs even if these are often the unspoken theme.

Bingo, Urban Vocals would sink faster in this market than a lead brick.
The demographic is simply not there to support it, Advertisers dont care about it, and KWJZ would most likley out perform the numbers by oh, 10 times?!

Either way, "Urban Vocals" sounds like a hobbist interent station or low power AM, as opposed to a Major Market Broadcaster.

What could be bad about all the current, recurrent and hot hits from all those formats? Keep people from flipping and take a chunk out of like no less than 15 stations in the market! Just leave out the rhythmic cuz eww.

Believe it or not a format like this already exists in Calgary at CIGY 97.7:
http://www.977calgaryfm.com/

The station was launched in Spring/08. By Summer/08 they had a 1.9 share of the market which grew to a respectable 3.9 in Spring/09 (tied with the local Classic Rocker Q107 & Alternative Rocker X92.9). Seems to be working out there, but then of course.....Calgary isn't Seattle.

and STAR adopted SOME of that philosophy about two years ago .... country crossovers, CHR crossovers, etc. bascially anything that could be compatible with a Hot-AC and could nibble at "best of" playlist on the other formats. And I have heard 97.7 in Calgary...it's very innovative. They have a TON of bus signs and benches for support marketing too.

One of the reasons Jack is Jack is because it's sold as a package from Sparknet Communications

Actually, Carey Curelop programs Jack completely and THEY hire Howard (the voice of Jack)on their own...they only license the name from Sparknet...no involvement from them for quite some time

Jim Dai is also no longer on KIXI now - pity

That is a damn shame. He has been an asset to that company for 15 years or more in several different roles proving his versatility and loyalty and willingness to do whatever it took to get the job done for them. And this is the way they thank him?

from what I hear, it was Jim's decision to leave KIXI.
