ANOTHER Christmas Station (Part-time anyway)

Apparently, WBMX is playing Christmas music, only in the evening. Anyone think it's too much?

The only upside is that they won't be playing the hideous Nickelback at night.

As one who has to tolerate (i.e. put up with) Christmas music at job #2 (which is almost as bad as 10 rock stations in the market - see another thread), yes, it is a little much. Not only can you not tell the difference between Mix and 'BCN during the day, but now you can't tell the difference between Mix and Oldies (soon to be WZLX-clone WBZ-FM) at nights.

Now what about "Back To The 80s Friday Night," a show which because of its alt-rock heritage actually belongs on 'BCN rather than Mix - and no, Led Zep and AC/DC have nothing to do with new wave whereas Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Blondie, U2, the Ramones and the Police are all alt-rock's parents IMHO!

I think I disagree with just about everything you posted in there... wow! I certainly hope this post is just supposed to be a joke.

By any chance, did you play Waldo in VH's Hot for Teacher video?

Not really considering there's 7 stations playing the stuff in Philly. 3 FM, an HD2, 1AM, and 2 FMs in adjacent markets that can be picked up in parts of the Philly metro area.

105.7 WROR, 106.7 WMJX, part-time 98.5 WBMX, and 99.1 WPLM starting 12/14, will bring the in-market count to essentially four.

It's the out-of-market stations that are making it torture. 95.7 WZID, 96.1 WSRS, 101.5 WWBB, 105.1 WWLI all throw strong Class B signals through much of the Boston market. Add to that the weaker out-of-market stations: 98.9 WORC, 103.9 WKPE, 106.1 WCOD, 107.1 WERZ, and on the fringe, 94.9 WHOM. So total, 13 all-Christmas stations can be heard in areas of the Boston market - way more then ever before.

It's a stretch to include Magic in your sweeping observation. Magic only plays a song or two an hour and it's usually by an artist within their playlist. They've been mixing in Christmas tunes during this time of year ever since they've been on the air.

They also play more uptempo tunes during the spring and summer months. How come you never post and say they went all-summer?

IMHO this move makes a lot of sense. They can stay in format during the day for office listening and the refugees from the 24/7 Xmas stations, and play Xmas at night when listening takes a dive anyway to give people one less reason to tune out.

Oops, meant Oldies - not Magic. Magic has actually been doing a great job of combining a tolerable amount of seasonal music with their normal soft rock playlist.

I know, right? 'Cause 'BCN plays so much Pink, Christina, Britney, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, Nickelback, Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Colbie Callait, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado...while Mix is all over Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Metallica, and Weezer.

Clueless.

Meanwhile on co-owned Magic 98.3 in central NJ, they've been caroling since November 15th, despite competition from 3 other Christmas stations. Greater Media's Now 97.5 in Philly flipped to all-Christmas right before the kids started trick-or-treating. Don't be surprised if Magic 106.7 flips on Halloween next year, with Oldies 103.3 and 105.7 WROR flipping November 1.

I think you're getting the two reversed.

You're about half right on the Mix playing the above 'BCN artists - at least according to the trades - Mix has always been ahead of the trades on rock tunes since Greg Strassell made the decision back in '96 to drop disco/dance based primarily on the poor 18-34s vs. its #1 25-54 rating at the timre. When did Mix ever add Pink, Christina, Britney, Rihanna, Justin, etc.? Every time I hear Mix it's been rock overload, plus I always thought that those were Jam'n (or even Kiss) artists, given Kiss' history (from John Ivey on) of (usually) steering clear of rhythmic because of Jam'n. And yes, Nickelback, Sarah McLachlan, Chris Daughtry and Barenaked Ladies are all 'BCN artists AFAIK - certainly based on chart performance on 'BCN's given format (Metallica, AC/DC and Guns N'Roses all have current hits on the R&R Alt-Rock chart). I stopped listening to music on a regular basis since Star flipped to (at least mostly) classic rock back in '05, instead listening to D&C, Howie, Savage, the Big Schmo (when Howie isn't on) and Traffic On The 3s when I have to tell bosses that I'm going to be late for job #2 - which, after listening to so much Christmas $%#@, merely gives me another reason to listen to so-called "hate talk." [No disco on any radio station in Boston, and no, I can't afford HD-2 in my car - more expensive than a Sirius (or XM) satellite radio I'll bet (even with subscription).]

And BTW, I surfed on my way home from job #2 and heard Waitresses, Band Aid and George Michael on Mix, while George Michael, Waitresses and Band Aid were on Oldies 103 at the same time. Am I at least making my point of too much duplication? (And yes, I am aware that the average listener wouldn't be aware of Mix going all-Christmas at night given their daytime listening vs. night and weekend listening.)

Actually I think Mix 98.5 is playing a good balance of Christmas music. Compliments to management.

The idea of a 24/7 Christmas music station from October to Dec. 25 is too much.

What I'd like to see now is the station that realizes the holidays don't end at 12 midnight on Christmas day, and then put away the music. Technicly there are 12 days of Christmas, there's new Years. Have the moxie to play seasonal/ Christmas music throughout the season.
