another critique my stream thread...

It's pretty subjective, asking a pool of techs for a processing critique... but here goes ;D

To me, the amount of processing and density is about right for the format. It sounds like you're taking a sample of an FM airchain though... a lot of high frequency limiting in there.

On my speakers, lots of bass, lots of highs, not a lot of presence, which makes your dialog a little hard to pick out.

If you're laying your weather over a reusable jingle bed (we did this a lot with Audition), the jingle needs to be about 1/3 lower in level. The mix made it hard to hear the voice. If you pull it down a bit, the processor will use the voice to duck the jingle, which is probably what you intended.

Otherwise, nice & tight. I heard "Heart and Soul". Whatever you're using handled the percussion great... not too aggressive & no holes punched in the audio.

My grade... almost there! ;D But then, this is like putting 10 cooks in the same kitchen and asking them to agree on something.

This is a bw broadcast dsp xtra with l/r outputs set to digital radio mode which if my understanding is correct, uses a lookahead limiter instead of clipping.

Ill agree on the limiting, I'm still running basically the same settings that we used on the main transmitter when the box was out there. I've had too many other problems this weekend to sit and tweak.i did notice the lack of presence in a quick listen, again, this preset is still pretty much setup for ota fm until I spend a little more time with it.

I value the opinions of others, however crazy they may be, there's plenty here that have been there and done a whole lot more than I have in my 28 years, only 5 of which I've had anything to do with broadcasting.

made some adjustments, sounds like an improvement to me at least. Discovered I still had pre emphasis on and a corresponding shelf eq of -15db at 15khz in the lookahead limiter (default behavior of this processor).

turned off pre-emphasis on input, adjusted shelf filter to compensate, messed with the multiband limiter some.

That's a LOT better!

Funny. I use the "extra" on the stream at my own business. A shame to take a processor with all that horsepower and relegate it to a streamer. I bought 4 of them when the series was new (and a lot more expensive), but never could get the grunge out of the limiter. Gave up trying to use them on-air and went to Breakaway & Stereo Tool.

The DSPExtra does make a darn nice stream processor, though!

Nice job, Stephen. You've got good ears.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm trying and learning...

We had the same issue with grunge on the air, never could work it all the way out. It was decent but not great. Running latest stereo tool on air now, it's great! Best money we ever spent on processing. The owner really liked the omnia 9 demo we had for a bit but could never justify the price for a small station in an unrated market.

I'm pretty hard on the employees about producing everything local at consistent levels and have everyone trained that mp3 is bad. Still some downloaded programming is mp3 and the cumulus satellite feed is what it is, local stuff definitely sounds better, we are working towards locally programming most of the day and only going on the bird at night over the next few months.

Streaming is at the studio, on air processing at transmitter, comrex bric link running flac getting audio out there, works great.

Some barix stuff around, only using that to bring in a church feed and such these days, they're too noisy for much else.

Checking now for response on laptop speakers.....
There may still be a wee bit too much high-frequency information... but it does sound very good.
I would roll off everything above 8 khz by another 3 db, by whatever means available.

Mostly because those who are streaming will be listening on tiny speakers that do not do justice to the lower end
anyway.

I'd really like to hear more of the audio from 40 hz to 400 hz to fill out the sound.

But I'm not saying it's bad in any way, or "thin" sounding. It just needs more bottom end to fill out the mix.
Density is great.... I only hear a little bit of digital swirlies....

The promos and liners seem perfect. The music out of library seems thin compared to the promos.

Tried just now with headphones, and will modify above to say the low bass is "there", but too much limiting
somehow. Or that the bass frequencies would seem more in proportion if there were a smidgen less on the high end.

I'll go tweak some more after dinner, the music is off the bird, it comes down sounding a little thin, IMO. I hope we go forward and get off there soon, except overnight, the plan right now is to continue cumulus classic hits overnight and program locally daytime.

the processor is definitely a little different on the high end since I killed all pre-emphasis on the input. Since I'm not using it on air, no need for it, IMO.

There are some who feel a bit of preemphasis is a good thing on a stream... maybe about 15uS. I don't care for it, because a lot of the digital stuff being recorded now is already heavily processed.

The box you're using has a lot of flexibility, which can be good or bad, depending on who's using it.

Best advice I can think of, is save what you have now as a preset, then make small adjustments. Don't play with it too often, because the way you hear things will change over time. You already know the input you give it makes a difference (sat vs local). I'd change something, then give it a day or two before going back. Check your reference preset once in awhile, to see if you really like where you're heading.

Eventually, it's probably wise to just call it good. You can make yourself nuts, frequently going back to tweak a processor. It will always be true that the next guy would prefer more of this and less of that.

Yep, I'm pretty happy with it at this point as well as several local people and, most importantly, the station owner.

We are also extremely happy with ST on the air.
